I`ve never done this before even tho dc 4 !
DD1 18yrs
DD2 15 yrs
DS1 7 years
DD3 1/2 !

Totally breastfed to date and very content.
Allowed her to help herself to my plate tonight where i ensured she could reach soft green beans if she wanted to.
She loved it-made a mess-squashed it and mushed and and ALMOST sucked it !
Well thats my experience so far !
Am about a quarter way thro eading the BLW book and very confident that she`s totally fine just breastfeeding for quite a while yet as omly have to look at her to see that nature is working wonders x
Bit scared about the whole lumps bit tho but willing to give it a good go x

porridge pancake details here.

CakeandRoses · 26/01/2011 22:42

thanks *can'tsleep' re the porridge pancakes - these look great, have just knocked one up and will try with dd tomo morning

fakeblondie · 26/01/2011 22:58

Okaaaay - have made the pancakes - smells like a breast pad nuked in the microwave at the mo !
Will fridge and try for breakfast-husband is looking rather dubious but trying his best to say the right thing - bless !

CakeandRoses · 26/01/2011 22:59

oh and what are your babies faves at the mo?

DD (in her first week of solids so not tried much yet) has managed best with:

mini breadsticks
ricecakes (got the hipp organic pumpkin and carrot ones)
porridge from a loaded spoon

she seemed to enjoy pear but it wasn't v ripe so didn't really munch much off

HotGiggity · 27/01/2011 09:20

I'm clearly cheap, I just got Kallo low salt rice cakes for DS...Blush

He loves pear, chicken leg (on bone), steak, broccoli, mango, roasted parsnips, banana, yoghurt and plain toast

He hates anything on his toast, mushroom, egg, cheese, avocado and anything mashed

CakeandRoses · 27/01/2011 10:57

Hello hot (you stalking me? or am i stalking you Confused)

wow - is he actually 'eating' all that stuff? i mean is he managing to hold, bite and swallow those things well?

A likes banana for instance but struggles to hold it as it's so slippery.

Oh steamed carrot seemed a success too judging by her nappies.

i just got the pumpkin ones as they looked a bit more flavoursome altho babies seem to like any rice cakes (weirdly, as they universally taste of nothing)

HotGiggity · 27/01/2011 12:46

I seem to clear up less than I put down, but he's isn't a frequent pooer so I don't always see much coming on the other end.

I tend to just break a banana in half and give it to him, he then breaks it down by himself, see pics in profile for evidence.

P.S I'd like to say your stalking me as I was hear first, but it was under a different username (HelenLG) so you couldn't possibly have known, therefore I don't think it can be called stalking... Wink

alfonzo · 27/01/2011 20:08

BLW going well, but feel the food is a bit uninspiring now, as not much variety in what dd will eat. For example, hasn't wanted any veg Hmm(carrot, potato, broccoli, red pepper, mushroom, parsnip, mangetout, sugar snap pea) with the exception of baby corn.
Has so far only really had fruit, yoghurt, porridge, rice cakes, bread/sticks, biscuit. Have tried bits of roast chicken but she just made a face and threw it away on more than one occasion. Noted the drumstick idea above so will try that. Wondered if anyone has any other ideas for how to introduce meat? Or get her to eat some bloody veg!

organiccarrotcake · 27/01/2011 20:08

Hi, may I join? DS2 is 6 1/2 months, EBF to now and he's had hold of a banana and apple piece, and I gave him a bit of squished banana on a spoon today just to try to give him a manageable sized piece. He chewed and swallowed that rather than gagging and spitting it out. No tongue thrust reflex which is reassuring.

Just cooking dinner and am cutting a baton of carrot for him with our carrots, and will give him a chip. The other bit is muscles so of course will keep them apart.

Did baby rice and mush at 4 months Blush with DS1 - 6 years ago - so this is a new adventure.

HotGiggity · 27/01/2011 23:24

alfonzo be warned that half the time when eating the chicken leg DS gnaws on the bone...

CakeandRoses · 28/01/2011 11:36

alfonzo have you tried make pate/puree/dip out of veg and giving it with toast/breadstick etc so she gets used to a veg flavour?

dd rather liked cucumber which you can pre-dip in other stuff too (she had it with humous)

it might be the texture of veg that she doesn't like at the mo: have you tried roasting the veg? better texture for babies to hold and munch bits off and often a nicer flavour

am veggie so can't help with the meat Bear

hello organiccarrot Smile it's good to give them a few bits and pieces at once so that a) they can drop half of it on the floor and still have some left and b) they're choosing what they want (apols if i misunderstood but it sounded as though you were only giving ds 1 carrot baton and 1 chip)

CakeandRoses · 28/01/2011 11:38

breakfast for dd today was banana, toast, various dried fruit, porridge - a bit of toast and quite lot of the porridge 'stuck' i think

sounds quite a variety but it's just easy to give her whatever ds and i are eating plus porridge

CakeandRoses · 28/01/2011 11:39

oh and a rice cake as she likes them Smile

HotGiggity · 28/01/2011 15:13

We had shredded wheat and pear this morning, which went down ok, but I couldn't get the shredded wheat to the right softness, it just kept falling apart.

DS had rice cakes yesterday and he seemed quite a fan, but they stink!! Sad

catdoctor · 28/01/2011 17:18

Evening all,

we've had resp infection and now cutting top incisors so v mis (both of us) for 3 days and virtually all food just messed about with and thrown on floor - dogs v happy.

Dried fig chewed with gusto though and this morning's nappy - eeuuch!

How have the porridge pancakers got on? My bab not too keen ( not sure if this was start of teething).

alfonzo · 28/01/2011 22:01

CakeandRoses - will try the idea of spreading veg puree/pate on toast, ta. Have tried roasted veg, also a no go. She's very good at withering looks for a nearly 7 month old Hmm Can't imagine where she gets her attitude from Grin

CakeandRoses · 29/01/2011 00:55

roast carrots and parsnips, dried apricots and a mixed fruit puree (loaded spoon) were today's faves.

she properly gagged for the first time on the apricot but brought it up fine and then just chucked it all back in again Hmm

hotg they do smell but i quite like it. altho i'm always smelling it and thinking 'what the hell is that?! Oh, ricecake'

catdoc i forgot to make it last night and no time today but def will do one tomo as she really enjoyed attacking it

alfonzo Grin at withering looks

TheWaterHorse · 31/01/2011 16:56

Hi CakesandRoses, how did you serve the dried apricots - whole or halved or...?

We've scaled things back a bit for now as dd has reacted to something and I'm not sure what. Sad Sticking to fruit and veg at the moment and planning to reintroduce wheat later this week to see how that goes.

Had a brilliant nappy this morning so at least some food is going down!

fakeblondie · 31/01/2011 22:17

Fabulous success tonight with a weetabix-poured 2 tbsp milk over and she smashed it into her face and ate loads !
Once the whole family were sqealing with delight at her efforts she contined and i think prob got about an 1/8 th !
Woop woop
Plenty of gagging but she is leading the way and im much more relaxed now. Dont think shes been ready tbh. I read a litle about the tongue thrust and wish id known earlier about it .

OP posts:
organiccarrotcake · 04/02/2011 20:59

I must relax about the gagging....

cakeandroses well I did only mean one of each Grin but only because it about day 3 at the time. Tonight he's had 3 roast pots, 3 pieces of butternut squash and a chunk of pork. I say "had" but of course I mean "squashed, gagged on and thrown".

alfonzo · 04/02/2011 21:04

Yay this thread's back! How is everybody getting on?
We are still persevering, more is going in than when we started but still not eating a huge variety. Dd tends to stick to the things that she likes and screws her face up at anything else. Going to try her with some leftover chicken casserole tomorrow as haven't really attempted giving her tastes of our dinners yet.
Anyone else been doing it for a few weeks with only a little progress?

CakeandRoses · 05/02/2011 14:05

this is the start of week 3 for us (with a couple of days off whilst she was teething and grumpy) and more is going in but it's still not huge quantities. She's enjoyed most flavours so far, especially ripe pear yesterday but still actually swallows more of things like bread sticks and rice cakes.

getting in the habit of regularly roasting vegetables for our or our toddler's dinner and saving some for her as she definitely manages better with roasted veg.

i'm getting in the habit of giving her spoonable food 1-2 a day (e.g. porridge, soup or baby rice mixed with puree) so she can practise with the spoon. she seems to enjoy that and gets quite a bit down her but everywhere else too of course!

waterhorse i just rip a dried apricot in half lengthways and let her gum it. they're pre-soaked ones but otherwise i'd soak them to make them softer.

alfonzo · 05/02/2011 20:02

CakeandRoses - i'm also doing spoonable foods 1-2x day, but dd is quite happy to be fed rather than guide the spoon herself, she gets lazy after a while and prefers me to do it! Was your dd a little slow to start feeding herself with spoon, or has she always been good? Guess I shouldn't worry though as that's how most spoonfed babies start anyway. Am making sure she has mainly finger foods. With pear this teatime, she gobbled it down so fast and had such big mouthfuls that she sicked it all back up (sorry if TMI!). So I now know that I have to slow her down sometimes as this hasn't happened before. Was scared for a moment, but dd was fine.

HotGiggity · 06/02/2011 09:50

I think we've gone backwards...DS was doing really well but now isn't as interested, and would rather chew on the highchair. I'm blaming teething, before the teeth everything was great.

Having said that, we did have porridge pancakes this morning which worked ok, but everytime he got some in his mouth he gagged and coughed.

He's also now refusing to drink from a cup.

Peaks and troughs I guess...

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/02/2011 21:17

7 months here now and all going pretty well.
When we can't be bothered or are in a rush we've discovered that he'll suck the contents of an ella's kitchen pouch directly from the pouch Grin, but the rest of the time he is feeding himself and definitely improving in his ability to do so. Had prawns and beetroot and cucumber for lunch today, as that's what dd had asked for for her lunch. I think most of the beetroot was still in the highchair afterwards, but the rest was demolished rather well. We gave fingers of the middle bit of the cucumber, as it's more watery and softer.
