Is 40 too old to start gaming again?

Hi,
I'm a 40 year old mum of 3. I played all the time as a teen (SNES with Mario, SIMs and Theme hospital on PC) then a couple of years ago got a switch lite to play animal crossing.
I haven't touched it for about a year after constantly being on it for about a year.

I think id like to play Hogwarts legacy, the Disney dreamlight valley, sims and the new avatar game when it's released. Would o be mad to buy a new generation console for my lounge to play on? ( with ds11)

My DS 15 has a series X in his room and my DS 14 has an Xbox one. I'm thinking about a ps5/ series x/s.
Am I too old? Do other women my age still play online and chat?

My DC think I'm too old!

unravelled, planet of Lana, plants Vs zombies battle for neighborville 😊

My Son got obsessed with Minecraft when he was 7. I started playing so I could better understand the game he loved so much.

He is now 13 and plays other games while I am still obsessed with Minecraft.

Haha! I try to keep my youngest two into Minecraft so I don’t feel like such a saddo! We love pythonMc on YouTube.

I play several games on the Xbox and Nintendo, and I'm older than you! Sometimes I game for an hour in the mornings before starting work, after the kids have gone to school. I love games like Skyrim, Elden Ring etc. If it's a faintly medieval setting and I'm sneaking up on people and killing them so I can steal a key and open an underwater chamber and get some upgraded gear, I'm happy.

The kids LOVE it when I let them join my Minecraft world or join theirs.

We play a number of games as a family too - MarioKart obv, but OverCooked is brillant.

Oh - Hades is excellent.

How could you possibly be too old? Our generation INVENTED gaming! It's ours!

DarkAcademia · 28/11/2023 15:37

God not Stampy?? 😂That man's voice was playing in my living room for HOURS every day it seemed when the kids were small. Not that they ever took a blind bit of notice of his redstone videos. The one bit of (almost?) transferable knowledge.

ManchesterLu · 28/11/2023 15:54

Absolutely buy that console! Me and DP are big gamers (we don't spend too much time gaming, we do balance it, but we love it when we can). We have PS2, 4, 5, Wii, Switch, PC and tablets, and have different games for each of them. We don't like playing the same games, so when we decide to have a gaming evening he goes upstairs and I stay in the living room. It's brilliant! There's no age limit on having fun!

OMG its NOT Stampy.
That made me spit out my tea laughing!
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

59 and am addicted to playing hogwarts legacy on PS5.

Not sure if it is a good thing or not. It eats free time, and has given me carpal tunnel... I feel I am getting too old! But I bought a wrist brace and am carrying on... it is just good fun.

ReadtheReviews · 28/11/2023 16:09

43 here and a clear sign that pmt is approaching is my sudden urge to play Sims 4. It's my.once a month hobby. Hate thr fact that the game platform tells you how many hours you've spent on it though. 5k at last look. I can't help thinking I'll want those hours back when I'm really old!

ajw7 · 28/11/2023 16:12

Not at all. I never stopped but my mum started gaming in her 50s with a Nintendo DS initially and it was a great hobby for her.

ajw7 · 28/11/2023 16:13

Also you would love Two Point Hospital which is available on Steam on PC and on consoles.

MigGirl · 28/11/2023 16:13

Well I'm 47 and never really stopped. If you enjoyed theam Hospital, try Two point hospital it's great. Have enjoyed Diablo series as well and we have a switch which my son just bought me the old sonic games for my birthday, so he ovously doesn't think I'm to old either 😀

Cosycover · 28/11/2023 16:14

They will need to prise that ps5 controller out of my cold dead hands.

Aria999 · 28/11/2023 16:15

46 and play swtor, currently crawling through baldurs gate 3 with DH.

FromEden · 28/11/2023 16:17

I'm 41 and play games, but don't chat. Started again when my dd got into super Mario, animal crossing and fortnite etc and we would play together. Now she doesn't want to play anymore but I still do 😄 Finished Hogwarts legacy, a few of the resident evils for nostaliga and now started on read dead redemption 2 (which is amazing and makes HP legacy look kind of limited tbh). Go for it!

Aria999 · 28/11/2023 16:18

I bet the teens in MMOs would be horrified to know how many of us are ancient in RL 🤣

Headphonehair · 28/11/2023 16:19

40 in December, just bought myself a ps4. Levelling up faster than ds on fortnite 😂

FromEden · 28/11/2023 16:19

Oh and I still play fortnite which is my shameful secret 😄

I’ve just had a cheeky game before ds gets home from school

KatBurglar · 28/11/2023 16:21

You're only too old when you can't see the controls anymore! Have a great time, OP

lookingforMolly · 28/11/2023 16:23

My 2 male Neighbours are gamers. Age mid 30s/ 40s with a huge screen and Bluetooth headphones, their house is always silent with the blackout curtains drawn & they spend large amounts of time gaming, one is possibly a healthcare worker but the other seems to work in tech for a career.
One of them has a covetable fast car with a gaming related registration number. They have cameras outside everywhere & seem to be really well off.
Nice enough guys if a little moody at times.

My point is you can be a gamer at any age and even make serious money.

lookingforMolly · 28/11/2023 16:24

Also I went on a hen party, we got chatting to guys from a stag do; again aged 30s / 40s from all over the uk; they'd all met online playing a game.

GetYourBaublesOut · 28/11/2023 16:27

My 65 year old Mum plays The Sims and I bought a new Alienware laptop this year so it could run more powerful games. Latest is F1 Manager.

I honestly think gaming is our generation's knitting or Airfix model building! Something you can do in the evening to relax.

Dubbledup · 28/11/2023 16:55

I just bought the PlayStation thing that lets you play handheld at home. I can't see why anyone else would want this apart from parents who don't want their DC to see their gaming on the big screen. I recommend it!
