Is 40 too old to start gaming again?

Hi,
I'm a 40 year old mum of 3. I played all the time as a teen (SNES with Mario, SIMs and Theme hospital on PC) then a couple of years ago got a switch lite to play animal crossing.
I haven't touched it for about a year after constantly being on it for about a year.

I think id like to play Hogwarts legacy, the Disney dreamlight valley, sims and the new avatar game when it's released. Would o be mad to buy a new generation console for my lounge to play on? ( with ds11)

My DS 15 has a series X in his room and my DS 14 has an Xbox one. I'm thinking about a ps5/ series x/s.
Am I too old? Do other women my age still play online and chat?

My DC think I'm too old!

64 here and I play The Elder Scrolls Online and The Sims 4. I would play more games, but my ancient laptop is out of space! You're never too old!

AttillaThePlum · 28/11/2023 12:19

Of course not. Yours, obsessed with the Zelda games in my fifties...

Feliciacat · 28/11/2023 12:20

I’m 36 and play Pokémon and Sims. I’ve been around these games for 25 years but I haven’t chatted to other players since I was 25 or so because the main fan base is 25 and under and I just think it’d be odd to talk to such young people (in this context). I have no problem talking to under 25s at work or at hobbies but there’s something a bit predatory about approaching kids online if that makes sense! This view is just mine though; you do you! You’re definitely not too old to game!

RedToothBrush · 28/11/2023 12:21

Was I supposed to give up?

I'm 45.

sosomcsoso · 28/11/2023 12:30

I'm 47

Just completed starfield!

Never too old

funbags3 · 28/11/2023 12:31

You can never be too old for gaming.

Malbecmerlot · 28/11/2023 12:31

I’m 47, still am a geek
Go for it!

alloutofcareunits · 28/11/2023 12:32

I'm 56 and love playing Mario games on my Nintendo switch (no kids at home either) I also have a PS4 but can't find games I like as any that run in 3d make me nauseous 🤢

Spudlet · 28/11/2023 12:34

41 and working my way through the Witcher 3 DLCs at the moment. Then have to decide if I just go straight back to the beginning of that one with NG+, or have a break from it and go back into Skyrim. And once a week I have meet-up with some other players (including DH) and we play Valheim together.

Heartfullofcheese · 28/11/2023 12:35

Mid 50s
Stardew obsessive. Currently playing Coral Island. There’s lots of us out there.

CheeseNPickle3 · 28/11/2023 12:35

I play. I'm a Minecrafter on an SMP server.

I'm 45.

I missed the memo too and game at 56. I prefer open world games, like Elden Ring, which gives me something to talk to the kids about.

TheBeatles · 28/11/2023 12:36

You must stop immediately. People will talk.

(Of course not. I’m not a gamer but I’m older than you and if I wanted to start, I bloody would. Have fun!)

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 28/11/2023 12:36

Nooooo- I've just stated again at 60!!

NoraLuka · 28/11/2023 12:38

I have never gamed in my life (unless you count a game of FIFA where my ‘playing’ caused the coach to start running up and down the sidelines in a rage 🤣) but you’re never too old! If you enjoy it, go for it!

burnoutbabe · 28/11/2023 12:46

never given up gaming and am excited i have, at 50, just finished a professional exam and i can now download a new game that i have been holding back on to not be tempted not to study!

(hogwarts legacy i did back in feb, buying a new XBOX s to play it on, was a lovely game)

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 28/11/2023 12:54

Gamer here too! I've gamed since I was 7 and am now 44. Treated myself to a ps5 in the sales as my 4 was dying. Also play Switch and Xbox. Got for it!

Squishered · 28/11/2023 13:06

Do it! Its a great outlet to let off steam. I started gaming again playing minecraft with DSs. Such fun and a real bonding experience. Now they are teens, gaming is their main hobby and they still share their gaming highs and low with me.

BTW Do you know about collecting Microsoft reward points? I collect them daily for the whole family. They build up + can be redeemed for a free month of xbox game pass. Its a brilliant saving!

DragonmotherKhaleesi · 28/11/2023 14:06

Thank you all!
Now I need to decide on a console and game to start!

I didn't know about the Microsoft points so I'll have a look.

If you find yourself feeling nostalgic about Theme Hospital, I recommend Two Point Hospital!

glassyhag · 28/11/2023 14:09

I'm 43 and per ordered Hogwarts so I got the extra airing the week before release. I hasn't touched a console in 25 years and after a slow start getting used to the controllers etc I actually managed to complete the game before my 10 yo nephew. I really enjoyed it, I'm hoping they bring out expansion packs and add ones with new content etc.

Theresit · 28/11/2023 14:10

Never too old! I got really into Skyrim about 5-6 years ago, late 40s. Before children it was the original Tomraider series on a PS1!

WelshNerd · 28/11/2023 14:23

I'm 40 and wouldn't say I'm a hardcore gamer but do play Xbox when the right game comes out. Hogwarts legacy is amazing. I didn't buy it on release as I thought it was too expensive but got it on sale and played about 100 hours, got all so the achievements etc.

I like the tomb raider franchise. Two point hospital is really fun. We have game pass so you get a lot included in that which you can try out.
