Physically and mentally tired ..could it be my diet

I've been vegetarian since childhood and vegan the last 7 years ,I'm in my 50s .
I'm so tired
Especially since I gave up caffeine
I've had bloods done and all that was flagged up was low vitamin d
But that doesn't make you tired ,I don't think
Could sleep for a week

Low Vit D really does make you tired. I was tired right through to my bones when my levels were low. I now take a high strength Vit D every day and have done for a few years now.
And i can now skip up and down the stairs a dozen times a day without feeling the exhaustion that would hit when my levels were low.

of course diet affect how you feel, are you getting enough B12 and protein too ? And enough iron.

Theoturkeyflieseast · 02/10/2025 16:36

Oh right ok
Thanks
No probably is the vit d then
Had it in my head it was lack of iron that made you tired

Lack of lots of nutrients can make you tired. My daughter wanted to be vegan, so I made her look up what might be missing in a vegan diet and what the effect would be.
Low iron, B12, folate and Vit D can make you tired.
So can lack of protein and lack of enough calories so lots of things might cause tiredness.
My daughter only lasted a month as it was too hard to get all the nutrients in and she started to feel under the weather, so went back to easy vegetarian protein foods like cheese and eggs

fairlygoodmother · 02/10/2025 16:59

Did they check your B12 when you had the bloods done? That is a really common deficiency in vegans, it's very hard to get from plant sources. And it can cause anemia.

Some deficiencies can also get more likely as you age because your body doesn't always absorb nutrients as efficiently for a variety of reasons. So even if you've been fine on this diet for a long time you might still need to make some adjustments over the years.

Theoturkeyflieseast · 02/10/2025 17:42

Thanks for the replies
I've ordered some high strength vitamins

You don't mention being a woman, but if you are and vits don't solve things, it could be menopause (lack of HRT?)

Woompund · 02/10/2025 18:04

Enough protein? (Minimum 1g per kg of body weight)
B12 supplements?
HRT?
Definitely supplement properly every day. I take B12, omega 3, D, zinc, magnesium glyconate. You don't need it all but D, B12 and omega 3 are all beneficial.

A vegan must supplement with B12, EPA-DHA, Vitamin D, selenium, iodine.

The other vitamins and minerals you can get from a well planned diet. Being malnourished makes you feel crap.

Yes also to iodine and selenium. I have iodised salt and try to eat a Brazil nut every time I think of it

CantSleepEver · 03/10/2025 09:51

Low vitamin d can definitely make you feel tired.

Cormoran · 03/10/2025 16:53

@Woompund I no longer rely on Brazil nuts for selenium because content varies greatly from one packet to another when put to the test, so I do take supplement for selenium now.

Is that in a multi vitamin

I'd be glad of any recommendations for a high strength multi vitamin with everything a vegan needs please

Low vitamin d can definitely make you feel tired.

I'm in bed now ..and it's only 5 30.
I feel like I spend the afternoon waiting until I can go back to bed.
Wondering if it's a touch of depression as well as tired.
I don't think this is normal

That sounds tough. Is there anything in particular making you feel depressed?💐

I take these multivitamins vitamins, (link below) but if you’re low in vitamin d, you may need more of that. Did the doctor say to take some? If you want to use a vegan one, just be aware that not all vitamin D is vegan. When my friend was low in it, she got some high strength vegan vitamin D in a health shop. I think you can take up to 4000IU a day but do speak to your doctor or a pharmacist if you’re unsure.

Theoturkeyflieseast · 04/10/2025 06:29

Thankyou
I will look at the vitamins.
I've recently lost a lot of weight..so calories have been low ISH ..that's probably not helping me other ..
I don't even know if it is depression..might be my age 52

I doubt you can get all you need from one pill only. I take 1000ug of B12, close to 2 gr of EPA-DHA combined, 3000iu of Vitamin D... you need to be specific when it comes to supplements based on needs. Selenium, iodine , K2 and similar can be covered by a multivitamin but they never include EPA-DHA

Could it be post viral fatigue like long COVID?

Efit- just saw you lost a lot of weight recently. Is that intentional or it's just coming off by itself? If the latter I'd be concerned and would flag that to Dr for more investigation.

SumUp · 04/10/2025 06:40

It doesn’t hurt to take extra vitamins, but when I was your age, fatigue hit big time.

Take a critical look at your diet - maybe try Zoe. And consider HRT if you’re not already on it. Dietary tweaks plus HRT won me enough energy back to start exercising again. Feeling fitter then helped fully restore my energy levels.

Also, be honest with yourself about your schedule. Most women in their fifties are juggling a lot of stuff. What can you say no to in order to create some down time where you can do something for yourself?

Theoturkeyflieseast · 04/10/2025 07:02

Definitely not COVID
Weight loss intentional on monjroro
Not on hrt because I'm on the progestogen only pill

Tiredness is a side effect of the weight loss injections. Are you still taking it?

Theoturkeyflieseast · 04/10/2025 07:24

Yes still taking it ..but I originally thought it was a side effect of being so fat ..which is why I started on them in the first place
I've been quite tired for a long time now

Of course lack of food and nutrients will make you feel tired.
You do need to take the right amount of Vit D to get your levels back up. It takes a huge amount over a few months to get Vit D back to normal.
What is your Vit D as you may need more than just a high strength Vit D every day. I had capsules with 0000 s of the amount to load me back up. It’s easy to find the information on the NHS website.
All I know about Mounjaro is you must still eat enough protein, a pp said 1g per kg and that is a number I have seen before. And enough food.
