Veggie, heading for vegan...but

Sonolanona · 05/05/2024 00:19

I'm veggie, and haven't drunk milk for over 30 years. I've made the switch to vegan 'cheese' ..not perfect, but ok, and I can manage it for most cooking needs.
But... I've had a boiled egg and toast for breakfast every day since I was 3 and I'm 56 now! Always free range (my family have chickens on a smallholding) but I am really struggling to make that last switch because , well, breakfast has always been an egg, and use eggs in cooking.

How do I ditch the egg?!

I think you'll need to use your will power here. Try establishing a new routine, egg every other day for awhile, then 3 times a week, etc. Do it gradually and find some other things you like. I can't imagine eating the same breakfast every day personally but if you are struggling maybe start with "fancy" alternatives that you know you'll like. Mine would be a veggie English breakfast (minus the egg of course), oatmeal with berries and maple syrup, avocado and veggie bacon toast, or banana pancakes.

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 05/05/2024 00:57

But your presumably happy chicken will lay anyway? Waste is worse than eating it surely?

Floralnomad · 05/05/2024 01:01

Just be a vegetarian that eats eggs from happy well cared for chickens and stop worrying about it , life’s too short and you don’t need a label for your diet .

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/05/2024 01:03

I know lots of vegans who will eat eggs as long as they know where it has come from and that the chickens are happy andwell looked after.

Traceyallshot · 05/05/2024 01:05

I’m a veggie and I’d love to go vegan, I really should given that I don’t agree with any of the farming that goes on, but I honestly think I’d die from lack of nutrition if I had to cut out milk etc. I would say in your case if you’re only eating those eggs and not eating eggs that are in any recipes etc then I don’t see why you can’t continue to eat them. Life isn’t always black and white and if it’s going to make a big difference to your life having to go without them then don’t do it

Traceyallshot · 05/05/2024 01:07

I think the big difference here is those chickens presumably aren’t going to be killed for meat eventually, which the free range shop bought ones presumably are. So you aren’t supporting any kind of farming by eating those

Veggie (will most likely go vegan over the next few years) here who is wishing that she could still eat eggs!! I love them and really want to like them again but unfortunately I can’t see past the fact that I am effectively eating a chicken’s period. It just feels completely wrong and I can no longer bring myself to eat them on their own, inevitably they end up in the dog’s bowl any time I try!

Thats fine if that’s what they want to do, but they’re not vegan.

If you want to do it, just do it.

Try scrambled tofu as an alternative or just eat a different breakfast. I tend to eat things like scrambled tofu and spinach with tomatoes on toast, porridge with fruit and seeds, muesli, beans and mushrooms on toast.

Hi OP. . Former veggie (now vegan) here who used to love boiled egg and toast for breakfast :)

What about avocado on toast? It's got a similar fatty texture so might provide that same comfort feeling? A friend of mine has avocado on toast with a boiled egg on it, so you could perhaps start with both and then maybe wean yourself off the egg?

Eggs in baking in really easy. It's just 1 table spoon of chia seeds or ground flax seeds to 3 tablespoons of water. That is the equivalent of one egg. So if you need 3 eggs, for example, you use 3 tablespoons of chia seeds and 9 tablespoons of water. Leave for about 20 minutes until it is gelatinous, then you can use.

There are lots of recipes online for scrambled "egg" using tofu too. You could have that on toast if you like ... Not exactly the same, of course, but if it was something you were missing ...

Good luck! :)

What do you eat that makes you not a vegan yet? I'm not vegan or veggie but respect anyone's choice and values

Cheese - it’s really the only thing that I’ve never been able to find a good replacement for

They say that cheese is much harder for a lot of people to give up than meat. I understand that it contains caso morphines (in all milks including human milk) - it's to make the baby want more and more of it's mother's milk, needed to grow. . Apparently, because cheese is so concentrated, it contains so much more of these caso morphines. Hence people find it hard to give up. If you can't find a cheese substitute you like, and really want to go vegan, then it's probably easiest in the long run just to quit it ...

I don't know if it helps, but apparently there are over a million pus cells in a teaspoon of milk so you can imagine how much pus is contained in the concentrated version of cheese.

I never found giving up cheese hard as I didn't really like it but I know it's a stumbling block for many.

Have you tried the cathedral city plant based blocks? They do a mature and extra mature one. I like those, they’re the closest I’ve found to dairy cheese. I haven’t liked any of the others I’ve tried.

HollyKnight · 05/05/2024 02:59

Is there a reason why you need the title of "vegan"? What's wrong with just eating everything else plant-based and still having those particular free-ranged eggs? Your diet doesn't need to be defined. Just eat the way you want to eat. If you want to eat eggs, then eat eggs.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 05/05/2024 03:05

I think posters are not realising this is the vegan board.

There are egg alternatives:- Oggs, Orgran, Crak’d should be in the cake ingredient aisle.

🙄 The OP has posted for advice on the vegan board and sounds like they want to be vegan, so that is ‘the way they want to eat.’

She also wants to eat eggs. Hence why I asked why does she have to be vegan. I dont know any ethical vegetarians or vegans who had trouble giving up an animal product. Only the ones doing it for health reasons found it hard giving up certain things.

She’s asking for advice on how to ‘ditch’ them, so obviously doesn’t want to eat them anymore.

Lots of vegans like the taste of non vegan foods and find it hard to give up. For most vegans I’ve known that is usually cheese and eggs. Asking for advice on how to give them up and alternatives on a vegan board doesn’t mean the person wants to eat them.

Well why does anyone need to ask advice on how to 'ditch them'. It's as simple as not eating them any more. If OP wants to be vegan then she needs to do that and stop moaning. If she wants to keep eating them then she can do so and not title herself a vegan. Pretty simple really.
