I was going to do it today but hang over and generally disorganised.

I have porridge planned for breakfast with a banana, home made lentil and veg soup for lunch and a mushroom and lentil bolognese for tea.

Fruit for snacks and plenty of water.

Doing it for all the reasons, animals, environment, health etc etc.

Anyone else doing it?

OP posts:

No. I really can't get on board with it. I'll happily do a dry January and happy to cut out all the sweets and goodies we get a bit too used to in December but not interested in a vegan diet. Good luck with yours!

Every month is veganuary for us but didn’t want to leave you hanging so good luck! Your meal plan sounds pretty tasty/good… I recommend sprinkling extras like seeds on things, like your porridge. Ime it’s all about getting a broad range of nutrition across your meals (it’s all too easy to be lured by carbs) - mixing it up with a variety of protein sources and good amounts of a variety of veg will keep you happy (Lifelong veggie, vegan 12 years). Enjoy! 😀

MissFizzyPop · 02/01/2024 09:59

I did it 10 years ago, never looked back.
Great idea to have a plan, I spent a lot of time reading labels on my first food shop 🤣

HermioneWeasley · 02/01/2024 10:01

are you taking supplements? You can’t get all the minerals you need from a vegan diet

Picklemeyellow · 02/01/2024 10:10

I would absolutely love to go vegan but I have terrible IBS and pulses and super high fibre leave me feeling quite poorly. I also feel better going gluten free.

If anyone has any tips on going plant based with an iffy digestive system I’d love to try it.

I follow Dr Alan Desmond on SM, he’s a NHS gastroenterologist who advices plant based diets. I also follow The Happy Pear, they have some lovely recipes.

Good luck OP, hope it goes well.

I once did vegan “ low” carb (it wasn’t proper low carb but much lower than a standard eating) with no gluten or refined sugar. It was probably pretty high fibre though?

I had vegetable soups, lentil soups, tofu scramble, “big” salads (lettuce, carrots, sprouted seeds, avocado, tomatoes, peppers etc) lots of nuts, seeds, avocado, grains like buckwheat, unsweetened soya yoghurt, salted crispy kale, chia pudding, oat bran porridge, berries, green apples, quinoa and roasted veg, shepherds pie with soya mince and turnip on top instead of potato, green veg curry with some quinoa, cauliflower risotto, mixed veg stir fry with chestnuts and bamboo shoots etc. It must have been great for me, I ate so much veg, but I did it during lockdown when I had more time to cook!

kikisparks · 02/01/2024 14:10

Oh and I have IBS I think but I can’t remember if that diet helped or not, it certainly didn’t make it any worse.

your meals sound good to me! There’s another veganuary thread going too I’ll get the link for you.

greenacrylicpaint · 02/01/2024 14:13

good luck!
we did it a few years ago.

what we took from it was that we don't 'need' animal products in our diet, but also that we don't think for us veganism is sustainable forever.

we will eat mostly vegan or vegetarian but have meat and fish once a week each.

Well 26 years on and I’m not dead yet, so not sure you’ve got that one right…

bakewellbride · 02/01/2024 14:36

Good luck op, that sounds so good! Here for ideas Smile

You can get all the minerals you need from plants. Vitamin B12 needs to be supplements or fortified food, but most people in the UK eat fortified food daily- bread and cereals are fortified with iron, cows milk is fortified with vitamin D etc.

kitsuneghost · 02/01/2024 16:26

HermioneWeasley · 02/01/2024 10:01

Actually that's a myth. You just need to be more aware of what you eat and not just swap meat for meat substitutes and vegan cheese

HermioneWeasley · 02/01/2024 16:30

vita b12 is only found in animal products so needs to be supplemented.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/01/2024 16:38

I did this a few years ago and have carried on. I don’t use vegan substitutes (milk, cheese etc), though I did in the beginning. I’ve been lapsing a bit lately as I hate throwing away food when I know how expensive it’s become. (I will now have the kids’ leftovers rather than binning everything.) Good luck.

bakewellbride · 02/01/2024 17:02

@HermioneWeasley it's only found in meat because the animals are fed a supplement! Taking a supplement ourselves is basically the same but without the killing. Please just let us share our vegan recipes with each other without the negativity / misinformation. I never post my thoughts on the carnivore diet threads / similar.

bakewellbride · 02/01/2024 17:03

@HermioneWeasley also you are mistaken because I have loads of vegan food with b12 in it Smile

HermioneWeasley · 02/01/2024 17:10

It’s not negativity, it’s facts. I wasn’t saying not to be vegan, I was advising OP she would need supplements. Which is true. This might be in the form of fortified vegan foods.

bakewellbride · 02/01/2024 17:47

@HermioneWeasley the way you phrase it is very negative and misleading 'you can't get all the minerals you need from a vegan diet'. Well I'm a vegan and am getting everything I need so let's agree to disagree 👍🏻

Thank, I think I might try to introduce those foods slowly and work my way up to fully plant based.

lol, no it’s not.
Go and read your Marmite jar!

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 02/01/2024 19:53

Not here, we like our meat. Doing no processed food and got a veg and meat box from local farm, eating local is best for the environment

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/01/2024 19:55

No, would really struggle without fish and dairy/eggs.

Hope it achieves what you’re hoping for, though.
