Milk alternative that is most like skimmed milk

Anyone know what I can try? I've been trying a few dairy alternatives but they have been too 'creamy' if that makes sense. I'm trying to replace just normal skimmed milk with the red top (fresh) but long life is fine too.

I’ve been trying unsuccessfully too, interested in responses

Sparklingbrook · 03/08/2021 18:10

I'm wondering whether a good alternative exists, but I don't want to buy lots of different ones and do taste tests. Grin

Almond milk. It’s pretty much like water. Do not like!

That might be what I'm after then, I don't think many like dairy skimmed TBH.Grin I will get some to try. A google suggested possibly Rice milk?

Do you drink it plain eg cereal or glass of milk or is to add to coffee?

I use "barista style" oat milk in my coffee because I like foamed milk with my coffee (ie a latte) and the "barista style" mills mean that they produce more foam.

This would be for adding to a plain old cup of tea, and maybe to drink in a glass? I have always wondered about getting a milk foamer though so that's good to know.

I've seen Alpro soy (?) in the chiller cabinet that's supposed to be for tea and coffee.

Just read the creamy comment - oat is probably not what you're after.

Sparklingbrook · 03/08/2021 18:21

I tried some Soy from the long life shelf but that was the too creamy one. But I’ll have a read of thelabels Alpro ones in the chiller. Thank you. I can always use it for something else if it’s not quite right in tea.
I’m changing one thing at a time so thought I’d start with milk.

Almond is a better texture for me but I hate the flavour

Lissy50 · 03/08/2021 18:27

I always buy Alpro Soya no sugars, it's the nicest alternative to milk I have tried.

Shakirasma · 03/08/2021 18:31

DD2 is lactose intolerant struggled to find an alternative she liked as they all seemed too creamy, biscuity or nutty.

She eventually settled on Koko unsweetened coconut drink, as she finds it to most like milk (she was used to semi skimmed) with very little noticeable taste.

Sparklingbrook · 03/08/2021 18:35

Thanks all. This is really helpful. I'm glad it's not just me with the 'too creamy' and I wouldn't want nutty tea.

I also want to sneak it past DH and point out he couldn't tell the difference.

I like alpro light but it definitely tastes nothing like milk. Makes tea taste so much nicer in my opinion!

Karwomannghia · 03/08/2021 18:49

Have you ever tried weak black tea? I once got tea from a take out and it had a lid on and I didn’t notice it didn’t have milk in at first I just thought it was strong!

I accidentally got one from the vending machine at work when I forgot to press 'milk' and it was surprisingly ok. Grin I like to add a dash of milk for the cooling down more than anything i think.

I'd suggest making your own oat milk - it's really easy, and the only disadvantage (which it won't be for you!) is that it comes out a lot thinner / less 'creamy' than the bought stuff because you don't add oils / emulsifiers etc. Also you can tweak the consistency by adding more/less oats, time of blending etc. There's a recipe here which looks more or less the same as I'd do.

Astella22 · 03/08/2021 19:17

Try drinking black tea for a week and u won’t want to go back to having milk in it.

Sadik · 03/08/2021 19:17

Home made almond milk is also easy to make and tastes fabulous IMO, but much more distinct flavour (and also a lot pricier!)

Sparklingbrook · 03/08/2021 19:23

I'll definitely give the oat milk making a go thanks @Sadik.

Not sure about black tea but it's more that it's too hot and psychologically, appearance I think.

My dairy allergic son had lots of alternatives around the house. Koko milk was the only one we had where the builders etc never asked which milk substitute we used in their tea. It was brand specific - the other 'coconut' type milks weren't the same (nite this isn't the cooking type coconut milk that comes in a tin!)

KatyPerrysMustang · 03/08/2021 19:29

I tried this oat milk www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/plenish-organic-oat-long-life-unsweetened-drink/649530-677406-677407 and it’s not creamy at all, a little watery to be honest… I prefer the creamier versions so this might be just what you’re after!

Got it past the builders you say? Ooooh.

Thank you, that'll be on my list too. Watery milk is my thing. Grin

Rebel mylk do a semi skimmed alternative and it’s very good. I have tried a lot of variations but this one is the closest to milk I have tasted. Can get it on Ocado.

Bebeschitt · 03/08/2021 19:37

I had to cut dairy out about 6 years ago and as a big tea drinker it took me ages to find a suitable replacement.
Even though I'm back on dairy now, I still use unsweetened soya in my tea. Just the uht supermarket own brand stuff.
Tea with cow milk doesn't taste right anymore.
I don't like soya latte, has to be oat but soya in a brew is just right for me.
