Anyone planning to do Veganuary this time?

So, January 2020 I mean.

Obviously, we have a couple of months till it starts, but I like to get prepared and practice some vegan meals in the run up.

Is anyone else planning to do it and would they like to join me on here?

@elmosducks

Those are all things that would be on my normal shopping list anyway - we obviously have similar taste!

I was thinking of interesting sauces, spices, types of seed maybe ...

Have already got Oatly, various tinned pulses, almond butter on the list for example. But would like more ideas. Not interested in processed food or meat/cheese substitutes but ingredients that are inherently good in themselves but i may not have thought of before.

Look at jackfruit, (the unsweetened if you can), that's a real treat for me.
Vegan Worcestershire sauce, vegan fish sauce.
Hère are some links to my favourite meals (I bulk prepare and freeze)

Gado Gado (comfort food heaven!)

With butternut squash in season, I make a lot of curries with chickpeas (save the water to make meringues with!), coriander and coconut milk. Lime juice to finish.
I use a lot of tumeric, mustard seeds, coriander seeds and garlic powder.

Feel free to ask for recipie shares (I am not close to home at the moment, I just had these on my phone).

I also use almonds to make a cheese spread type substance, which I eat with hummus, five seed crackers and olives.

These crackers are amazing. I make a big batch and store in a tin. Your gut will thank you!

Some great suggestions.

I'm not sure I get the point of jackfruit though?

Don't people eat it because it has the texture of meat? But not much protein?

Can I join? I am veggie but going completely vegan for Veganuary and will possibly look to continue with it long term.

I made a big batch of roasted tomato and aubergine curry last night, which I can freeze and use for a couple of dinners.

Today I made an oat milk based smoothie with fruit, spinach and raw cacao powder for breakfast, I had a fresh tomato and basil soup for lunch, and am planning stir fry veg and tofu with udon noodles for dinner.

Does anyone have any good vegan choc recommendations? This is the one area that I worry I might cave!

@NewName73 try it and see if you like it? I didn't become vegan because I don't like meat, I became vegan because I don't want to eat animal products anymore.

(And please let's not have this thread turn into a what other people think vegans should be eating thread. They are exhausting)

@Motherofhounds I am not in the UK so can't comment but Oreos are vegan!

I follow an Instragram account called accidentally vegan

I'm not saying what I think vegans should be eating, just what I want to eat myself. No processed shit, fake cheese or fake meat for me. If others want to eat that, I'm absolutely fine with it. Each to his own, etc...

I guess my question about jackfruit was, would an omnivore eat it? Or is it just a meat substitute?

Vegan jelly koalas in Aldi today! I bought a few as they are good for school cake sale pleas (surprisingly few cake topper thingies are vegan - some have fish in Envy

Jack fruit is a fruit, it grows on trees and is not processed. Hope that helps.

I'm currently doing veganuary Smile but I am planning to stay vegan.

Been vegetarian for 16 years and very rarely eat anything non-vegan anyway but from now on I am labeling myself as vegan and making sure I only eat plant-based foods. Looking forward to trying all of the new foods that have been released this month.

@Motherofhounds Aldi have some lovely vegan cookies and vegan chocolate. There is vegan white chocolate but also some of their dark chocolate bars are vegan (just check the ingredients because some dark chocolate still contains milk).

Vegan Galaxy orange is lovely but quite expensive!

Elmosducks, what does it taste like? Or is it bland like tofu & you add your own flavours? I eat lots of tofu !!

Report
elmosducks · 03/01/2020 19:36

I have only ever used it in curries or to make pulled 'pork', so in string tasting sauces. It seems to absorb the flavour of whatever it is being cooked with. I much prefer it to tofu.

Today my friends cooked me tofu 'bacon', which was quite something. They used liquid smoke and amino acids. These are things I have never bothered with before, but I have now ordered!

Can I join too please! I'm usually a meat eater so veganuary is something new for me. Looking forward to trying some new recipes and eating a lot more veg than usually! Tried Jamie Oliver's puy lentil and mushroom Bolognese tonight, which I'd highly recommend. I also bought some dark chocolate from m&s which is vegan.

Not a chance

I don’t want a vitamin deficiency and I’m worried about all the insects killed for the pursuit of my vegan lifestyle

Report
mindproject · 03/01/2020 21:16

I'm just wondering where you think the vitamins in meat originally come from hamstersarse? And you're not really worried about insects are you. What is about veganism that annoys you so much?

Ah I'm amazed it's taken 5 weeks of this thread being up for a vegan-basher to start.

Worry about what's on your plate Hamster rather than what's on mine.

God there's always one...

I've been a vegan for a year and a half. Meals I cook regularly include:

Vegan bolognaise and pasta
3 bean chilli and rice
Macaroni cheese with crispy kale and broccoli (to make the cheese sauce I make a white sauce, then add nutritional yeast, bouillon and little bit of turmeric)
Sweet chilli tofu stir fry
Jacket potato with vegan quiche and salad
Cauliflower curry and rice
Dal and vegetable rice
Roast vegetable/lentil lasagne
A wide range of noodle dishes
Fried potatoes and onions with vegan sausage and peas
Sunday dinner
Various soups, stews and salads
Bean burritos

I eat a lot of very healthy food but I also enjoy a bit of vegan pizza and do a bit of baking too.

@mindproject you eat well, my mouth's watering! Can I ask how you make your white sauce please?

Report
mindproject · 03/01/2020 21:49

I melt vegan butter (flora), take it off the heat, stir in a bit of corn flour, slowly add soya milk or oat milk, then bring to boil until it thickens. Then I add bouillon, nutritional yeast and a tiny bit of turmeric. Sometimes I add a some pepper or a bit of mustard.

It doesn't taste exactly like cheese sauce but it is delicious. Sorry I can't give exact measurements, I don't follow recipes.
