I'm 16 weeks and obsessed with the idea of a cheese and onion pasty. I've been vegan for nearly 4 years and dairy free for nearly 8 years so no idea where this has come from. It's to the point where I have to walk a different way round the city to avoid Greggs at lunch time.

Anyone got an amazing recipe for cheese onion pie/pasty that tastes like a Greggs?

Help!

Apparently they sell frozen Greggs cheese and onion pasties at iceland

wejammin · 11/05/2018 12:58

With respect that is spectacularly unhelpful given I am trying to AVOID eating a Greggs cheese and onion pasty.

Maybe your body is craving it because you need something from it.. ie dairy etc

froglou · 11/05/2018 13:02

Could you make your own with Vegan cheese? And maybe bring them out with you

People crave all sorts of things when pregnant, I wouldn't say it's because your body specifically needs anything. I'm sure you're getting everything you need from your usually diet and pregnancy vitamins!

Synecdoche · 11/05/2018 13:02

This is easily veganised and hits the spot for me!

wejammin · 11/05/2018 15:07

Ooh thanks @synecdoche that looks good.

Do you think if a made a really thick cheesy bechemel with fried onions and baked it in puff pastry squares it would cook right? I've got original violife, Tesco cheddar, Tesco smoked, sheese red Leicester and Sainsbury's cream cheese in the fridge.

Definitely!

A place near me does a vegan version. Try having a Google see if there one near you

Ploppymoodypants · 11/05/2018 15:25

Just to say, I am 13 weeks and I have been dairy free for 15 months and eat v little meat and only v high welfare (like once a week or less).

However since about week 4 I have been CRAVING meat and dairy desperately. In particular yoghurt and lamb chops. I am afraid I have given in on the assumption that my body obviously really needs it. None of the vagan alternatives work (and I generally love vegan food). It doesn’t help that I am very sick and anything I don’t fancy tends to come back up 😕 good luck.

wejammin · 11/05/2018 16:07

I found some from the Cornish Vegan Pasty Company but it's £54 for 12!

@Ploppymoodypants I think my willpower would just dissolve if I gave in and the problem is that dairy really doesn't agree with me, I get terrible stomach cramps and sweats, so I would pay for it 20 times over.

Maybe some ten acre cheese and onion crisps might be a good backup option.

Go with Synecdoche suggestion... Secretly scoffing the forbidden murchandise

Pressuredrip · 11/05/2018 16:18

i think I'd make a cheese sauce with Oatly and Asda strong dairy free cheese and a bit of violife and nutritional yeast and then mix it with a little mash, and then cook in frozen pastry. Most frozen pastry is vegan.

Pressuredrip · 11/05/2018 16:19

The barrista Oatly actually as its thicker and creamier. Or even Alpro soya cream.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 11/05/2018 16:20

After 14 years of being vegetarian I had a craving in my pregnancy for a bacon sandwich. I went and bought the bacon, cooked the bacon, ate the bacon.... you can probably guess the rest. Not wishing to be too goady but I would imagine your body is lacking certain nutrients OP.

wejammin · 11/05/2018 19:39

DH just made me an amazing cheese on toast with spring onions. It definitely hit the spot. I've just told him he's going to have to make me many many more.
I think it's the grease and salt.

@ontopofspaghetti I'm so glad I've never liked bacon because it seems to be the bete noire of so many veggies!

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 11/05/2018 20:21

That definitely works in your favour! Glad you had a satisfying mealSmile

DrScully · 11/05/2018 20:24

Don’t want to be unsupportive OP, but your baby might be needing certain things to grow properly.

Could you do a ‘swap’ with someone, they eat a vegan meal for lunch that they normally wouldn’t, and you eat a pasty? Then it cancels out the net effect.

RubiaPTA · 11/05/2018 20:28

^thats not a thing

wejammin · 12/05/2018 07:34

@DrScully I can't eat the real pasty, dairy makes me sick.

I'm not sure by any stretch that any foetus is missing the nutrients in a Greggs pasty though Grin

Greggs is a guilty craving of mine. I know I'm late but I found this recipe. www.euphoricvegan.com/2015/12/cheese-onion-rolls-with-violife.html?m=1

kitcatdog · 19/06/2018 17:31

@wejammin how are you getting on I'm pg and vegan and I hate all food atm. The only food I fancy is egg, tuna and chicken legs. Obvs I haven't had any but I was wondering if you have any advice. I can't bare the thought of any of my usual favourites and am pretty much living on cornflakes and oat milk, the odd crumpet and mash. It's getting very boring. Please help! 🙏

wejammin · 19/06/2018 21:35

Hiya @kitcatdog, I’m doing ok, I think my cheese issue was a salt craving cos I’m getting through salty food like a Trojan! Fry’s sausage rolls did the trick on the pastry.

For chicken have you tried the oumph meat from Tesco (in the freezer). It’s genuinely chicken-y and we made amazing “chicken mayo” wraps with it the other day.

Never tried it but I’ve heard Vegg is just like egg yolk?
