What do you put in your tea?!

I’ve more or less made a good transition over to eating a predominately vegan diet.
But I’m struggling with milk in tea!!
I’ve tried almond and soya (curdles), coconut (tank).
Any suggestions?

Oatly Barista. It has to be the grey Barista one though, it's amazing, so creamy!

JesusTapdancingChrist · 30/01/2018 22:45

I'm not vegan but switched from cow's milk to oat milk 6 months ago and will never use anything else in my tea.

Almond, soy and coconut milk are vile in regular tea. They're all too sweet/cloying.

It also (unsurprisingly!) works fantastically with porridge.

My favourite is the Provamel Oat milk which I buy in multipacks.

butternutmosh · 30/01/2018 22:47

Oat milk all day long 💪🏼👍🏼

Redwineistasty · 30/01/2018 22:52

Thanks!... I assumed oat milk would curdle like almond milk.

I’ll pick some up tomorrow and give it a go!

jesus Inuse almond milk in porridge yum!

Hemp milk is the best in tea. Hazlenut or oatly barista for coffee. Yum.

Redwineistasty · 30/01/2018 22:58

Never heard of hemp milk... where do you buy it?

It is nice I usually get from waitrose/ocado. Their range of free from stuff is the best and lots of good offers there is always something dairy free reduced each week.

Redwineistasty · 31/01/2018 11:53

Thanks leather we don’t have Waitrose here, but we do have Booths and they tend to stick similar stuff. I’ll take a look.

Oatly Barista is made to go in tea and coffee. It's creamier, doesn't separate and is really nice. It's the grey oatly. Though I prefer my tea less creamy and use the standard Oatly (blue pack). It splits a little but nowhere near as much as almond milk.

bk1981 · 31/01/2018 16:05

Oat milk doesn't split and tastes okay in tea and coffee.

Littlepig8834 · 31/01/2018 19:35

I find alpro soya light ok in tea, does t seem to curdle and I don't really notice the difference in taste. The non light version does seem to curdle though.

dangermouseisace · 31/01/2018 21:08

I use long life unsweetened soya milk. It has to be either supermarket own brand or alpro organic (their normal one is vile since they improved it). 'Fresh' soya milk is disgusting IMO. I don't ever get a prob with soya milk curdling...I only use it in tea though, and add it after tea has brewed so it's not just out the kettle. I have coffee black.

I find oat milk a bit weird...

drspouse · 31/01/2018 22:16

Can I hijack and ask redwine to share anything nice you find in Booths as I am also in Booths Country.

Rottweilers · 02/02/2018 21:36

Hiya! Try the brand almond breeze or the good hemp. Both really good brands and don’t curdle x

SimonBridges · 02/02/2018 21:38

Another vote for Oatly.
It’s getting easier to find. Our local Co Op stocks it now.

FairfaxAikman · 02/02/2018 21:52

I'm not vegan, but I take my tea black - have you tried that? After a while you wonder why you ever had milk in it - I've had mike Black for about six years now.

Someone made me a cuppa today - they asked me what I took in it and I said "just two sugars" (sweeteners if I'm at home) but they put in milk anyway. All I could smell/taste was warm milk.

ButFirstTea · 02/02/2018 21:55

I use Alpro soya and I've never had a problem with curdling! My favourite is Lidl's own brand soya but there isn't one near work so I have to make do with whatever the Tesco express has to offer!

honeysucklejasmine · 02/02/2018 21:57

I'm finding Oatly increasingly difficult to find! The only way to get Barista round here is to drive 15 miles and pay £1.77 a carton in Waitrose, or do an online shop with Morrison's, who stock it in their online warehouse but not in their local stores.

Sainsbury's doesn't even stock the normal Oatly reliably. Tesco can be dodgy too, patchy at best.

Happies · 02/02/2018 22:11

I tried soya first then almond but settle in oat milk. Actually prefer now.

It does curdle in coffee but not if you warm the milk up first! X

Cheatabix · 02/02/2018 22:12

Almond milk is fine in tea if you put the milk in before the hot water

Redwineistasty · 02/02/2018 22:14

Ha drspouse I haven’t managed to get to Booths this week, but we do have a fab little green grocers in our village and I bought some oatly barista from there the other day and I have to say that I love it in tea! Prefer it more so than milk. Although at £2.50 a carton I may have to be frugal with my tea drinking, or alternate between that and milk Confused

fairfax
I have tried tea without milk and it’s too bitter for me and I’m not willing to add sugar.
I don’t mind black coffee though Smile

Bloody hell - £2.50?! It’s cheaper than that delivered from Amazon.

Emily7708 · 02/02/2018 22:24

I’ve started to drink more green tea now, I haven’t properly enjoyed a cup of tea since giving up milk. I use Koko milk on cereals.
