Non dairy yoghurt for babies

Hey all,

Reading mixed advice on non dairy yoghurt for babies. No one can seem to agreed on soya but I’ve always understood it to not be amazing for little ones, and to eat in moderation.

What yoghurts do you give to your children?

Unless your baby has a milk allergy surely normal yoghurts are best for the calcium etc

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 07:41

@strawberrypenguin I’ve become vegan because she’s BF with a lactose intolerance and her dad has a severe dairy intolerance.

Do you have any advice on non dairy yoghurts?

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about soy, but I’ve decided to just approach it with moderation, like anything really. DS likes the Tesco own brand soy fromage frais (yellow ones are gross, red are lovely-they have a monkey on the packaging and I can’t remember the name because we call them ‘monkey yoghurts’!), and also likes Alpro Big Pot Vanilla and Alpro Go On Plain. He is a yoghurt fiend, and eats more than is healthy I’m sure, but after CMPA and silent reflux for years, he has some pretty awful associations with food and I’m still at the ‘give him anything he wants just to get calories into him’ stage.

Are you sure she is lactose intolerant as breastmilk is full of lactose? She may more likely be cows milk protein intolerant. Do you get coconut yoghurt?

whyIsARavenLikeAWritingDesk · 26/01/2018 07:55

For my CMPA daughter I just buy the normal alpro flavoured yoghurts in the smaller pots! I found the Tesco fromage frais yoghurts gave her a really bad tummy for some reason!

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 07:55

Thanks @oscha. Dh loves the alp to soya stuff, and the ingredients are good: sweetened with fruit not sugar etc, but a but confused about using soy as mentioned!

What about coconut yoghurts?

I’ve not looked at fromsgr frais so that’s interesting, thank you!

Koko are made from coconut milk

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 07:57

Sorry @dementedpixiebyes cows milk intolerant. (We’ve had very little sleep 🤣)

I’ve eaten coconut yoghurt a little bit and it’s good but very expensive and seems sweet!

Going dairy free would not affect lactose in your breastmilk as it contains it naturally anyway (it is the sugar in all milks).

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 07:58

Sorry all... full of typos, it was a really really long night 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hope I’m making sense.

Asda shows a 2 pack of small strawberry koko for £1

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 08:00

Oh brill thanks @dementedpixie! I don’t shop there so will take a look :)

DS doesn’t really like coconut yoghurt, which I find a relief tbh as it’s so expensive!

If Oatly made yoghurt I’d be so damn happy.

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 08:07

@oscha... oatly ❤️❤️❤️

We have tried them all as my dd is also CMPI and I cut out all traces too when breastfeeding. The best ones are really expensive yes I am afraid. I don't like the soya ones but really like nush cashew/almond yoghurts, coyo chocolate flavour (really thick and rich, love it with raspberries) coconut collaborative all flavours or koko small pots. I just get whichever is on offer, the offers tend to rotate. I find waitrose the best for all free from foods, or ocado delivery, not as expensive as you think because they do so many good offers.

A little tip for a lovely dessert for yourself is if you get a large bar of dark choc and melt it, whisk together with a tin of normal coconut milk, decant into little pots and refridgerate then it goes exactly like those gu ganache chocolate pots, so good! Cheap too.

BrownTurkey · 26/01/2018 08:12

I can't really answer about soy, sorry though I somewhat share your concerns (haven't seen any evidence as such). And it's not about yoghurt. But I thought I would mention that I was at a presentation yesterday where a state registered dietitian mentioned Alpro Soy 'growing up milk' as the best nutritionally complete substitute milk, and said Almond and coconut milk versions were not sufficiently fortified.

The allergy UK forums are quite helpful too, though not as busy as here.

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 08:18

Thanks @brownturkey, I’ve seen the laptop growing up milk. Is oatly milk etc not fortified enough? ☹️

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 08:18

Oh god what’s wrong with me... *alpro

So sorry for my idiocy 🤣

@oscha I’ve just found out that they do make an it yoghurt, currently only in Sweden but coming to the uk this year Grin

A few years ago you could also get a pea based yoghurt from H&B. Never tried it though

ISeeTheLight · 26/01/2018 10:09

DD with CMPA get the little Alpro Soya yoghurts. She's under a paediatric dietician and consultant at the hospital, both of whom recommended it. I'm no longer BFing (she's 4 now) and gets the Alpro soya junior milk to drink too; again on recommendation by the consultant. She's doing fine on both. They advised against coconut and other alternatives as the Alpro Soya milk is nutritionally better suited to dairy-free children.

Tmgc123 · 26/01/2018 10:13

Oh that’s great thank you @iseethelight

As an alternative to yogurt, you can make custard with oatly milk (or koko or whatever you use). Birds custard powder is dairy free.
