Non dairy yoghurt for babies

Hey all,

Reading mixed advice on non dairy yoghurt for babies. No one can seem to agreed on soya but I’ve always understood it to not be amazing for little ones, and to eat in moderation.

What yoghurts do you give to your children?

Please don’t worry about soy - unless you’re allergic it’s perfectly fine and healthy.

Every plant based yogurt I’ve seen are fortified with as much calcium as a dairy yogurt, so no concerns their either.

DD has coconut yoghurt called Little Coconutters, which I'm sure is full of sugar but, meh, it's a small treat every so often not everyday. I normally find one pouch will do 2 or 3 days.

I'm not giving her soya due to the possible fertility link. Which is possibly ridiculous, but that's my choice.

Oatly is fortified and fine as long as you don't buy organic. Barista edition is best as it's highest in fat, calories and protein.

Alpro growing up is meant to be best but my DS can't have soya either so dietician and paediatric consultant recommended oatly.

This is all really helpful, thank you so much everyone :)

I’ve been reading that you can get non dairy probiotic if I wanted to go down the homemade yoghurt route. Using fortified plant milk would work, just depends on taste! 🤣

OMG, you’ve made my day about Oatly yoghurt!

I know it’s dairy but have you thought of goats yoghurt?

When dd was under the dietitian we were told most coconut yogurts weren’t good enough as a substitute for cow’s milk because of the lack of calcium and that soya yogurts were better as more often they were enriched with calcium. Same with cheeses. I do give her calcium chews daily now she’s bigger so not so worried these days but it seems things haven’t changed much on the coconut products despite them being more popular now.

We get the Tesco monkey fromage frais, they have two flavours per four pack now. We got the coco-nutters pouches this week but they are pricey and very sweet.
