Vegan milk

GravitasLass · 10/08/2017 14:43

How do you feel about this stuff? Would you drink it?
www.perfectdayfoods.com/

It is made using the same proteins as cow milk - but without any cows. I'm quite excited about the idea of real cheese etc - but think I might struggle with the ick factor having been vegan for a while. They are planning on launching this year.

What do you think?

My ds would love this. He follows a vegan diet for health and environmental reasons so doesn't have the "ick" response to the idea of eating animal products. He really misses cheese. I think there is a market out there for this.

LineysRun · 10/08/2017 14:51

That's really interesting. Is it for sale yet?

LineysRun · 10/08/2017 14:56

Oh I just saw - launching in US at end of 2017.

GravitasLass · 10/08/2017 15:05

I suppose it'll be ages before they launch in the UK Sad

I'm not a vegan but I have concerns about the dairy industry so I'd give this a try. Have you seen the new vegetarian 'meat they are developing

GravitasLass · 10/08/2017 15:18

I can see lab grown meat taking over in the future. It seems the proper lab grown meat is still some way away but they are slowly making veggie burgers more realistic like the veggie burger which 'bleeds'

I'm sure I read somewhere that the fake milk could well be cheaper than the cow version which could be a game changer

Sounds interesting but I'm a little confused by the term 'dairy yeast' - they say no animals are involved but haven't explained (or at least I can't see an explanation) of what it is.

I'm not quite vegan, but am intolerant of a lot of dairy and I'm vegetarian by choice. Right now I still struggle to find something to put in coffee that a) doesn't curdle and b) doesn't cost the earth, and although there are some good 'cheese' items out there, none of them are quite right. If I could have animal free cheese and clotted cream, I'd be really, really happy.

Mulch · 10/08/2017 15:40

Definitely. I'm not vegan or veggie but when meat/dairy substitutes improve I'd happily swap.

GravitasLass · 10/08/2017 16:01

I think it's a yeast they have genetically engineered to produce the proteins found in milk. They filter the yeast out of the finished product.

OP posts:
SleightOfHand · 10/08/2017 16:22

I'm not sure if I've missed it but I can't see a list of the ingredients.

GravitasLass · 10/08/2017 16:52

I can't see any specific ingredients mentioned either except for the casein and whey made by their genetically engineered yeast.
(Yeast is vegan isn't it?!)
I guess they will release an ingredients list when it's closer to their launch.

Very very interesting!!! They do claim to be vegan several times in their FAQ - the starting ingredients are yeast and sugar. I'd want them to get a vegan society mark though, or at least explain the origin of the yeast a little better.

I have never liked the texture of milk so can't see myself going back to it apart from as a baking ingredient maybe - but if they can make decent cheese out of it I will be v excited!

michelle303 · 16/08/2017 09:52

Hmm this does look interesting. My sister and brother in law are both vegans, I'm keen to know their thoughts haha

LoneStarRising · 16/08/2017 09:54

I agree that a decent cheese is a great vegan desire. And milk for cooking, e.g. making custard, sauces. IF they can keep the prices affordable ...

sonlypuppyfat · 16/08/2017 09:56

Surely it's just a chemical concoction

SerendipityFelix · 16/08/2017 22:15

Surely it's just a chemical concoction

If you want to look at it like that..... then so would beer, wine, yoghurt, bread... all fermented foods.

MrsCK · 16/08/2017 22:17

Would vegans drink breast milk?

BrawneLamia · 16/08/2017 22:28

Mrsck the vegan parents I know have brreastfed their children well into toddlerhood, to avoid giving their child animal milks.

MrsSquiggler · 16/08/2017 22:30

Breast milk is vegan as women are able to give consent to be "milked"
Can you make cheese out of breast milk? Maybe that's the answer!

MrsCK · 17/08/2017 08:06

Ah ok thanks for explaining!!

:)

VeganCow · 17/08/2017 14:49

I emailed them last year when I heard of this , I got this reply-

What is brewed milk? What do we mean by animal-free? How can we create dairy that’s got casein and is vegan?

The answer, friends, all comes down to a little, yet mighty yeast we lovingly call Buttercup. Think of Buttercup as our “cow.”

To make Buttercup, we started with a standard yeast, which we received from the USDA, and gave her a “blueprint” in the form of 3D printed cow DNA (no animals needed, not even for the DNA). Voila. Buttercup — our milk protein-making machine — is born. This yeast can now ferment sugar into casein and whey proteins, identical to the ones produced by a cow. Plus these proteins are 100% vegan and food safe.

We then carefully separate these proteins and combine them with plant-based fats, non-lactose sugar, and micronutrients to produce milk that tastes great and is better for the planet. Plus, it can be used to make stretchable cheese, creamy yogurt, rich ice cream…. [we’re drooling over here. You?]

Cheers,
Ryan and Perumal

That sounds almost too good to be true. Ds is vegan but even before becoming vegan he was lactose intolerant. Do you think this will habe lactose in it? I really hope it takes off

VeganCow · 17/08/2017 18:37

No it doesnt have lactose in
