Vegan milk

How do you feel about this stuff? Would you drink it?

It is made using the same proteins as cow milk - but without any cows. I'm quite excited about the idea of real cheese etc - but think I might struggle with the ick factor having been vegan for a while. They are planning on launching this year.

What do you think?

It sounds interesting, but potentially a bit frankenfood... I think I would need more info, I agree that as a cheese making option it could be worthwhile! But I would have a hard time choosing to come off my oat milk for that currently... Confused

I've been thinking about this more..... and starting to question the rationality of a product like this.

The whole exciting premise of this is the invention of a way to produce casein without involving animals. Because we care about animal welfare - we want to consume milk & milk products, but we don't like animal exploitation. So a way to produce casein without animal exploitation, great!

But why do we actually want to eat casein? It's not good for us. It increases cancer risk, respiratory and digestive issues. It's addictive - out bodies respond to casein in the same way we respond to morphine. So why on earth would we go to dramatic lengths to recreate casein?

BrawneLamia · 20/08/2017 14:21

I suppose serendipity that people will continue eating dairy because it is a tastes good, so it would be better if we can find a cruelty free (and more environmentally friendly) way to produce it

SerendipityFelix · 20/08/2017 15:25

I can see it in the same vein as e-cigarettes. Less toxic. But that doesn't make them good for you.

Dina1234 · 20/08/2017 15:28

It most likely won't taste like cows milk so I wouldn't worry.

SoftSheen · 20/08/2017 15:36

This sounds interesting, but I suspect it will not be available in the UK any time soon because it is, obviously, a genetically modified product.

SerendipityFelix · 20/08/2017 21:03

It's not genetically modified. There was some genetic engineering to create the yeast in the first place, but it's not GM.

SoftSheen · 20/08/2017 21:27

The 'milk' formulation contains proteins produced by a GM organism (the yeast). Therefore in order to manufacture it you would need to grow lots of GM yeast.

The 'milk' end product may not ultimately contain much/any GM DNA, but neither, for instance, would soya protein products derived from GM soya beans. I think that both would be considered to be GM foodstuffs though.

The FAQs explicitly state it is non-GMO

VeganCow · 01/09/2017 13:44

I emailed them again, and they are bringing it out in US next year, and the rest of the world at some point after. Cheese etc as well!
