Mull - which part to stay in?

This year we are thinking of going to Mull cheaper and nearer than france our usual destination. I am sure it is lovely but am torn between staying somewhere rural and beautiful where ds(5) may get bored or staying in Tobermory and finding it a bit touristy . DD (10) likes cycling and exploring like us, but Ds may not be so keen . Are the beaches good ? Anyone got links to places they have stayed and liked
please. Any tips also welcome , places to visit etc

i've only ever stayed overnight.
in tobermory.
in a hotel on the waterfront. unfortunately the room was at the front on street level and i didn't like that much.

you definitely need to go to iona.

not sure i can be much more use.

Mull is SMALL. Therefore wherever you stay you will be able to go to all the rest. If you are taking a car over it will not matter where you actually stay. If no car probably best in Tobermory as boats and buses mainly run from there. Definately go to Iona - a magical place. I'm sure DS will be thrilled with Tobermory. As you come in one the ferry it does look exactly like Balamory.

We stayed here a couple of years ago. It is astonishingly beautiful, v. family-friendly and easy to get to almost anywhere you want to get to. There are some v. lovely white sand beaches a bit of a drive away.

Easy drive to Tobermory as well.

colette · 09/05/2009 22:20

Thanks for your replie,
dh thought the accomadation is more important than where exactly we stay so maybe he has a point . Iona will be on the itinary then

Calgary Farmhouse Hotel is fab. Has two self-catering apartments as well - we spent a blissful two weeks in one, and the lovely hotel restaurant is right opposite. Also a lovely sandy beach there.

FlappytheBat · 09/05/2009 22:22

Calgary Bay is beautiful and well worth a visit, the scenery on the south of the island is stunning.

Only visited for a day but plan to go back and stay for a few days soon hopefully.

andiem · 09/05/2009 22:23

we stayed in tobermory in Josie jumps place which is a b&b here
second going to iona it is lovely

mawbroon · 09/05/2009 22:25

Iona and also Staffa to see Fingal's cave if you can.

MamaHobgoblin · 09/05/2009 22:26

Calgary - another vote! The loveliest beach I've ever seen in Britain, and deserted. It's to the north of the island. We camped next to the beach.

dollius · 09/05/2009 22:26

this is the link

If your DS watches Balamory, be warned, some of the house have changed colour since it was made.

DC1 refused to believe that we were at Miss Hoolie's house as it was the "wrong" colour.
When we got home and Balamory was on, it was very quickly pointed out to us "see I was right, miss hoolie's house is green and not blue"

frogs · 09/05/2009 22:27

Oh yes, the cottage I linked to is right by Ulva Ferry, from where you can get boat trips to Staffa and a couple of other islands which is FAB.

Pingpong · 09/05/2009 22:29

A day trip to Iona and a day trip to Staffa or combine it. Whale watching or dolphin watching trips are also good.
There are some nice beaches on Mull - Calgary for example but the beaches on Iona are nicer. Pure white sand.
Don't know where you live but be prepared for it to be a lot colder than France (pack waterproofs, fleeces, wellies, sunhats, sunscreen, midgie repellant and shorts - weather could be great or it could be terrible)
More info on Mull and Iona
It's best to book the ferry as it is very busy in the summer months calmac ferry

FlappytheBat · 09/05/2009 22:30

MamaH, you were lucky!!!

when we were there last year, the campsite was absolutely full, would love to wild camp there.

we were there in august, but are hoping to go at the end of may this year so might be luckier!

We stayed at glengorm castle (see nutty's link) for our honeymoon and it was lovely. We stayed in the terrace apartment, and said at the time we'd go back some day when we had children.

Its a 5 minute drive north of tobermory which was a perfect blend of rural/convienience for us.

pointydog · 11/05/2009 22:10

agre that the island is so small that it's all rural, even if you're in tobermory.

I've been for a day trip before and for a one night stay once. We're going again this summer for a 2 night stay and will be staying here. They have a small s/c studio but sounds great for the four of us. And it has a pool in case of Much Rain!

Seocnd calgary beach and iona and staffa (loads of puffins anbd other seabirds to see nearby on Lunga).

pointydog · 11/05/2009 22:12

We last went about 5 years ago but there was a good bird of prey centre which we all enjoyed. There's the mini railway to one of those Victorian castles. Can't remember the name. Begins with T. Some toffs own it.

Duart Castle is worth a visit too. Lovely cafe.

pointydog · 11/05/2009 22:12

(Duart Castle is a real castle)

Torosay Castle, lol at the toffs. We went last year and the toffs were actually there working in the shop, cafe and pottering around the castle. Was very amusing.

There is a lovely beach at Ffionport. It's actually a campsite. We also stayed in the campsite next to the ferry terminal, which was nice. The Isle of Mull Hotel is nice and has a new pool and spa.
