Mull - which part to stay in?

This year we are thinking of going to Mull cheaper and nearer than france our usual destination. I am sure it is lovely but am torn between staying somewhere rural and beautiful where ds(5) may get bored or staying in Tobermory and finding it a bit touristy . DD (10) likes cycling and exploring like us, but Ds may not be so keen . Are the beaches good ? Anyone got links to places they have stayed and liked
please. Any tips also welcome , places to visit etc

I seem to remember a phenomenal number of stag heads in teh hallway, mimi, shot by their own fair hands. Is that right?

We went last August and stayed in Tobermory, in Josie Jumps house no less, hotel was lovely, food at the pub was nice the Indian Restaurant was very good.
Calgary has a lovely beach, we went there one afternoon, the kids paddled in the sea with their wellies on as it was so cold. We then went and had lunch at the Dovecote Restaurant, again very nice.
We took the steam train from Craignure to Toronsay Castle, that was lovely and the kids enjoyed the train and the play area at the castle.
We didn't go to Iona this time but we did go once before when we were there about 13 years ago. It was New Year so very very cold, but it is meant to be nicer in the summer. There is loads to do, trips to see dolphins and whales etc, we didn't have time to do any of those things though.

Definitely book the ferry or else you won't get on.

They weren't just in the hallway pointy, they were everywhere you looked.

Was all a bit disconcerting to be having a good nosey at some old china, then a resident toff walks in, followed by her pet dog, says 'good morning', then gets a serving dish out for luncheon. Was rather bizarre, but definitely worth a visit just for the weirdness of it all.

I do bristle at giving these toffs my cash, though. Don't think I could stomach more than one visit to Torosay in my life.

I got the impression they just about tolerated us plebs. We pay the bills after all.
