I have a full time job and am a carer to a multitude of family members. After a terrible week where one of them has been in crisis I have been gifted a weekend by myself next week.
Can anyone recommend somewhere, hotel or self-catering, I’m not bothered really on the accommodation , I just want some peace, beautiful countryside to walk in and maybe a pub to sit at on a balmy evening.

My happy places are the north Norfolk coast or Northumberland but both are too far away to get to after work on a Friday.

I don’t know about specific hotels, etc, but I’ve just spent some time around Hathersage, in the Peak District and it’s a glorious area. Amazing landscapes, incredibly green everywhere right now, I could happily have stayed longer.

(Sorry you’ve been having such a stressful time.)

Hathersage will be packed at weekends at this time of year!

The Howgills - somewhere like Kirkby Stephen - might be less busy.

Peak District, Castletown has a nice b&b I’ve used

singswithitsfingers · 10/07/2026 21:33

Wirral coast?

Oldraver · 10/07/2026 21:36

Do you want to drive or train ?

You can get to Buxton from Manchester

TheLiloAndTheSlowCooker · 10/07/2026 21:39

Hello - if train, how about Hebden Bridge, if you want a small town? 35-45 mins from Manchester Victoria.

North Wales. About 1hr 45 would get you to Beaumaris on Anglesey and there's plenty of pretty little places on the way if that's too far.

Tonissister · 10/07/2026 21:48

Ribblesdale. The Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland is so beautiful. 1hr 15 by car.

Castleton is gorgeous, I agree.

Last drop hotel and spa, horwich way.

I can do either but will probably drive as I won’t have much time after work on Friday to get somewhere then chill.

Somewhere in the Peaks is the really obvious answer surely? The bigger places will be more touristy but there are plenty of holiday cottages dotted around the little villages/in the middle of nowhere.

Neveranynamesleft · 10/07/2026 21:55

Silverdale, Morecambe bay, about 8 miles north of Lancaster. Coastal walks, Leighton Moss nature reserve, definitely worth a look.

Flazzled · 10/07/2026 21:57

Lots of great ideas here, thank you, I will take a look at some of the suggestions but I could really do with specific accommodation as I just don’t have the bandwidth to search.

Bolton? I did not have that on my radar 😀

What sort of budget? Nice pub with rooms, or spa hotel? North wales is a good shout, or Shropshire- empty and pretty

Flazzled · 10/07/2026 22:07

I don’t have a budget. It’s July so I know I’m probably going to have to chuck some cash at it

Come to Yorkshire. Harrogate is lovely

This looks perfect but there’s not much accommodation around there which is a shame

Not in summer if you want peace and quiet unless in a little cottage on the tops. Maybe Pecket Well but all the nice walking places will be rammed.

The Alma Inn near Ripponden is nice and has rooms and Shibden Mill Inn near Halifax is gorgeous but pricey. Beautiful and less busy walks than places like Hardcastle Crags or some bits of the Peaks

Flazzled · 10/07/2026 22:13

I’m in Littleborough @Sidebeforeselfalmost Yorkshire!

Chester Grosvenor? Apparently it’s closing in September this year!
