I have a full time job and am a carer to a multitude of family members. After a terrible week where one of them has been in crisis I have been gifted a weekend by myself next week.
Can anyone recommend somewhere, hotel or self-catering, I’m not bothered really on the accommodation , I just want some peace, beautiful countryside to walk in and maybe a pub to sit at on a balmy evening.

My happy places are the north Norfolk coast or Northumberland but both are too far away to get to after work on a Friday.

I know Hebden Bridge. It’s the exact opposite to what I’m looking for. It’s busy, touristy, lots of noisy drinkers coming in off the train and full of random protests in the square. Not relaxing at all.

Challan Hall in Silverdale on Morecambe Bay is gorgeous and has a room available next weekend. Peaceful place with gorgeous views. Good walking.

North lakes hotel was a real treat but would be a teeny bit further, about 1h 50 plus Friday traffic

Rubble valley- Pendle and surrounding areas are lovely

Sisublondie · 10/07/2026 22:24

I’m sorry you have had a rubbish time….

If you have no budget, Buxton Crescent Hotel. Perfection! I live in the Peak District and it’s very close by. Took my Mum there last year for a special birthday. Gorgeous hotel and outdoor rooftop pool and spa…. Buxton to wander around.. but stunning countryside in minutes off the tourist track, and pubs to stumble across and watch the sheep go by…

I hope you get the peace and chill factor you deserve. And that things improve for you all……

Thank you all who have recommended Challen Hall. That could tick all the boxes!

North Wales is lovely but the motorways to get to it can be a pain, very busy.

butnotlikethatanymore · 10/07/2026 22:43

However - mention of North Wales makes me think of an entirely different type of stay, and one I can vouch for through long experience.

I first went there about twenty years ago, when it was still described as a retreat and returned several times. If it hits the spot it’s a place to which one can become deeply attached.

@butnotlikethatanymore Gladstones looks ideal for a restorative weekend. I never get time to read normally. Thank you

The Forest of Bowland if you can get accommodation there really isn’t anything there tbh and due to lack of accommodation never seems to get busy.

butnotlikethatanymore · 11/07/2026 13:26

It really is a very special place. The library is beautiful enough to make one weep.

(There was a point where I was going so often, escaping from problematic life circumstances, that they gave me a bursary to stay for a couple of months. That was before they upgraded all the rooms and increased the prices. I remember a vicar saying at the time that she’d worked out it was cheaper than being at home. There was a discount for Church people.)

It’s much busier now during daytime - but the evenings are quiet, as then it’s just the residents. There’s an honesty bar before dinner - and always interesting conversations happening. Scholars and clerics arrive to stay from all over the world, as well as people just wanting a break.

Hawarden is charming. The Gladstone Estate is good for walking. Chester is just up the road. And all of the North Wales coast is on the doorstep.

It’s still one of the places in the world that I most want to be.

Peak district

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 11/07/2026 16:36

Kirkby Lonsdale. Beautiful

LlynTegid · 11/07/2026 16:39

Harrogate seems a good idea.

The Etihad stadium is allegedly quiet year round according to my work colleague who is the Manchester United supporter born and brought up in the area.

Janefx40 · 11/07/2026 16:42

Go to Tideswell in the Peaks. Near the other places but not white as touristy as Castleton and Hathersage etc. Very easy walks - just walk up out the village to Litton or out the other side and see panoramic views. Very easy. Beautiful and lovely. Have fun x

NigellaWannabe1 · 11/07/2026 16:54

OMG, a library you can stay in!!! I had no idea such a thing existed. That’s right up my street.

butnotlikethatanymore · 11/07/2026 17:15

😄

Another suggestion: this is a bit downmarket but a few years ago I took myself off to Caernarfon to see a play and stayed overnight in a Travelodge on Victoria Dock overlooking the Menai Strait. I fell so in love with the melancholy peace of the place that I booked a longer stay the following year - this time at the Premier Inn. Which meant I had a window looking out over the harbour.

I dunno … I can imagine some people would hate it, but it’s an excellent place to be sad. The castle is a couple of minutes walk up the road. And the walled town is vaguely jolly.
