London accomodation

Travelling from Yorkshire to London by train early June for 2 night trip. Will arrive into Kings Cross. Where have you stayed that’s reasonable (I know it’s subjective!!) but somewhere clean, safe and accessible to more central London. Not looking for hotel with fancy restaurant/spa etc just need a good sleep. Happy to get tube etc to get around rather than pay silly central London accommodation prices. I have seen posts in the past where people have genius ideas about staying on a specific route into London, avoiding the centre but still accessible. Obviously cannot find any of those posts now I need them!! 🤦‍♀️🤣 Help me out folks!!

What are you travelling to see and do? London is huge! I often stay at the Z Hotels in central London (for work). TINY room but very well organised and I've always slept well.

Herecomethedaffodils · 10/03/2026 12:17

Yeah it’s true London is huge but we’re just looking to do something different this time, accommodation wise. Feel like I don’t want to spend more than is absolutely necessary just to sleep!! Im sure many people will relate. Plus I’m from Yorkshire so don’t like to waste money!!!!! 😂🤣😂 Probably go for afternoon tea somewhere, walk along the river, visit some gin bars etc. We go most years and have stayed in a variety of locations ranging from The Park Plaza at Westminster Bridge, Russell Square, Leicester Square, Bayswater Road and whilst they’ve all been very different and have met our needs each time I’m just wondering what other options people might have to suggest. Thanks.

Premier Inn are usually my first starting point in such circumstances!

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 10/03/2026 13:04

I normally premier inn, normally stay around King’s Cross as I can keep my case there on my last day, come back for it and then hop on the train home

BrickPoster · 10/03/2026 13:09

I stayed at the Premier Inn Hub at Kings X last summer and was surprised - the rooms are small(!!!!) but modern and do the job for a base.

There’s a proper Premier Inn nearby too. Although I’m in London for a weekend in March and the Premier Inn prices for central London were pricey so I’ve booked us a nice Novotel instead.

Tbh I just check the websites for the main chains and then various comparison websites to find the best prices.

The Easy Hotel (like easyjet) is near Old Street and perfectly good. The Z Hotels are also good. In both cases, look out for the fact that some rooms don't have windows. Might not be an issue for you but some people might not like it.

ethelredonagoodday · 10/03/2026 14:13

Also from Yorkshire and go to london quite regularly. Prem Inn is usually my starting point, although have also stopped in a Zedwell (no window, and tiny, but comfy bed!)

Yes this the premier inn kings cross is clean and i felt very safe and it is just over the road from the station

Premier Inn at County Hall. Or you could stay further out, somewhere like Bromley (which is not an exciting place!) but it’s about 15 mins into Victoria and has a Premier Inn right opposite the station and two travelodges within easy walking distance

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/03/2026 16:01

Brixton Premier Inn can be as little as £60/night and is right on the Victoria Line into Victoria, Green Park, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross.

Clapham PI is pretty reasonable too, and 30 mins ish to Westminster, Trafalgar Sq, Covent Garden etc on the 87 bus, which stops outside, or Battersea Power St, Sloane Sq/King’s Rd, Knightsbridge, Oxford St on the 137 that stops across the road.

Looking into the options of staying further out so this is really helpful. Will investigate thanks.

Look at St. Albans too.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/03/2026 19:22

My 2 picks for affordable but decent ( and we have to do a lot of overnighters in London) are always the premier inn Belsize Park ( it was originally a holiday inn so much nicer decor, bar and cafe area than usual Prdmier inns ) and the copthorne Kensington ( huge and not pretty but clean , tidy and good facilities ) if you don’t mind staying further out the brand new Travelodge in Gunnersbury is suprisingly tidy and cheap ,( I did it for £64 the other night) especially if you pick one of the ‘plus’ rooms - actually nicer than the premier inn rooms - it has a bar and cafe area too and 4 minutes walk to tube

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/03/2026 19:25

Premier Inn

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 10/03/2026 19:26

I have stayed at the PI at Stratford as it is often much cheaper - it is on the tube and on top of a big shopping centre so you are not wandering about in the dark if you get back late after a show etc.

tutugogo · 10/03/2026 19:31

i like to stay in the south ken/ Gloucester rd are as it has lots of local restaurants and bars, near to museums, Hyde park and easy tube/bus into the centre. There’s options at different price points so all depends on your budget vs minimum quality. Generally price drops as you walk further away from the tube

Don't stay in Bromley, that's the other side of London! And no point commuting to St Albans either.

Suggestions for staying on the outskirts of London are for people driving, so that they can avoid driving and parking in central London. There's no gain for train users coming into King's Cross and then travelling out to a distant hotel.

Ithinkofawittyusernamethenforgetit · 10/03/2026 19:40

I hope you don’t mind me mentioning The Highbury Centre, it’s a Christian guest house. I’ve never stayed (and I’m not pushing Christianity) but it’s very near where I live and looks so peaceful and leafy. It would be on great transport routes - Canonbury overground, Highbury & Islington and several buses into central/West End. I’ve read these threads before and never known whether to mention.

I've stayed 3 times now in the Travelodge in Covent Garden, on Drury Lane.

It's a great location, feels very safe as it's full of tourists.

The hotel has been recently refurbished and their Superooms are really nice.

There are also several great cafes for breakfast on Drury Lane.

MissMoneyFairy · 10/03/2026 19:54

I'd look at the Thistle hotel, there's one in bloomsbury which is not too far from KX, we've always found them comfortable and cheaper than PI

I think it’s only because you also asked for good, fast routes in - Victoria to Bromley 16 mins and St. Pancras to St. Albans 18 mins.
