Can you please recommend lovely places to visit by train for short breaks.

I've visited York and it was ideal. Train station right in town and lots of history, cafes, walking, things to see and do and places to stay.

Obviously I have not transport when I arrive so need to get around on foot or public transport. I'm interested in towns and cities but would also be up for wild places with plenty of walking (and cosy pubs).

Where else might I like please?

I went on holiday to Newcastle by train. Loved it.

Penzance 😊 one of my favourite places, lots to do, plenty of places to walk to and it's well connected by bus. Lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants. St Michaels Mount. You could do a boat trip. There's a Premier Inn right by the station.

Birmingham.

I know it is not a typical tourist destination but there is a surprising amount to see. Walk or take the tram to the Jewellery Quarter for individual jewellery but if you book ahead some of the shops do work shops where you make your own ring or pendant.

Bournville is beautiful but no pub.

Cadbury's factory tour.

A walk by the canals.

A show / play at one of the theatres.

Several museums / art galleries including Coffin Works if you want to see how Victorian coffins were fitted and some more recent fittings i.e. the Queen Mother.

Obviously there is shopping and you have to eat a Balti, it is virtually the law.

Margate / Broadstairs / Whitstable

Rye

Oxford or Cambridge

further north, you can do Alnwick / North Berwick / Dunbar / Berwick-upon-Tweed

Alnwick doesn't have a station. To get there you would need a train to Alnmouth, (which is not even in Alnmouth and doesn't have a taxi rank), then a bus to Alnwick.

My suggestions:
Shrewsbury
Ludlow
Liverpool
Carlisle
Stamford
Newcastle (can get to Tynemouth on the metro - the market at Tynemouth station at the weekend is brilliant)

@SeaAndStars , not what you asked for but you could go to Dublin.

Thank you all so much for so many fantastic suggestions. On your recommendations I've booked a trip to Norwich for next month and Llandudno will be next on my list.

The trips that include a boat trip sound really exciting and I never thought I would be saying that I really fancy a visit to a coffin works.

Isn't it amazing how you can have the town and then, after a short trip, be right in the middle of open country. I'd do the Edinburgh to Rannoch trip today if I could.

Thanks again for so many brilliant ideas.

From Exeter you can get a train to Okehampton from where you can walk onto Dartmoor

North Berwick and Edinburgh.
So much to do in Edinburgh and Berwick is a short train ride away - lovy sea side town.

As a side note OP, if you travel with the same person often, get this rail card. DH and I made back the cost of the ticket from the saving we made going from London to Edinburgh one time. Plus, we had the card to use for an entire year. Its not a benefits type discount card, nor does the friend need to be a partner/same address etc.

Liverpool - loads to see and do and all walkable
Newcastle - and once you are there the excellent Metro takes you out to the coast

RampantIvy · 09/11/2025 10:08

If you like scenic rail journeys I highly recommend the Settle to Carlisle route and the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh route. We did the latter trip earlier this year on a bright, sunny day and the scenery was absolutely stunning.

Oxford
Bath
Exeter
Bristol
Totnes
Durham
Edinburgh

Lots of lovely rural spots in Devon, Yorkshire, Northumbria...

Inter-rail sites and forums will give you loads of options.

So many brilliant ideas. I love the sound of the scenic Scottish trips especially.

@JDM625 The Two Together card is amazing. DH discovered it and that is what has sparked our interest because it makes rail travel so much more affordable. I don't know if people know much about it but you can have one at any age. I'd thought you had to be a student or over 60 to get discounts, but no.

The Coffin Works in Birmingham is definitely worth a visit for anyone who likes quirky little museums. There’s a police museum too. However, I live in Brum and it definitely wouldn’t be in my list of places to recommend, unless you’re coming for a specific event or seeing friends. The city centre is really not very nice now, unfortunately.

My top places would be:
Liverpool and a trip to Crosby beach - fabulous museums too

Manchester - brilliant indie restaurants and pubs; nice botanical gardens just outside the city; good museums; excellent trams for getting around

York and/or Leeds - you could do both in one trip. Ribblehead viaduct/Saltaire/other lovely places by train
