Can you please recommend lovely places to visit by train for short breaks.

I've visited York and it was ideal. Train station right in town and lots of history, cafes, walking, things to see and do and places to stay.

Obviously I have not transport when I arrive so need to get around on foot or public transport. I'm interested in towns and cities but would also be up for wild places with plenty of walking (and cosy pubs).

Where else might I like please?

All and any cities - Chester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lincoln, Liverpool, Manchester, Norwich, Salisbury...

Llandudno, North Wales.
Falmouth and or Penzance, Cornwall.

Get yourself to a book shop or library and buy/borrow a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide to Britain.

Skipton, Settle or Ilkley, and planned properly, from there you could into the Dales.

Train from where?

OccasionalHope · 07/11/2025 10:35

Bath.
Salisbury.
Bristol.
Manchester.
The Lake District is surprisingly doable by public transport, but more for a longer trip.

Where are you starting from? Places like Looe in Cornwall have a train station, although might require a number of changes depending on where you are coming from. Lovely coastal walks and places to eat

Shropshire.
Shrewsbury, Church Stretton, Ludlow all easy on the train.
Then use Shrewsbury as an easy connection to Wales

Train from where?

A good point! I'm starting in Somerset and my nearest mainline station is Bristol Temple Meads.

Some great suggestions here. I'll look into them. Thank you all.

Margate / Broadstairs / Whitstable

Rye

Oxford or Cambridge

further north, you can do Alnwick / North Berwick / Dunbar / Berwick-upon-Tweed

Check out Cardiff! Very scenic on the way there and as well as the historic stuff in the centre (castle, museums, parks for walking) I enjoyed the BBC studios stuff out in Cardiff Bay. John Lewis for posh tea with a view over the city. You can get around it by train too, smaller local stations handy

Winchester

Weymouth (direct trains from Temple Meads)
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Oban (the railway station is next to the ferry terminal, so you can visit the islands)
Exeter
Plymouth

Train to Sheffield, then pick up the Hope Valley Line for the northern parts of the Peak District (Grindleford, Hathersage, Edale, Bamford).

If you started early you could get to Thurso in a day, and go on to the Orkney (and Shetland ?) islands by ferry.

MinnieMountain · 08/11/2025 06:29

Tenby.
Fishguard/Goodwick.
Bradford-on-Avon.

I love the Hope valley line.

Liverpool, and then the Merseyrail to Crosby (Anthony Gormley statues on beach) and Formby (National Trust pine forest with red squirrels). Or Merseyrail to West Kirby and walk over to the Hilbre islands at low tide to see seals.

Llandudno. Lovely little town with walking up on the Great Orme.

Arundel, best castle ever.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/11/2025 06:57

Alnmouth, for the fabulous Northumberland coast.

Salisbury would be nice and close to you.

also Isle of Wight, train to Southampton and the ferry terminal is walking distance. Public transport on the island is very good. I went just for a day and caught a bus to Osbourne house and then had a look round Cowes. But plenty more to explore on the island.

The railway line between Worcester and Hereford is scenic and you could stay in great Malvern (Victorian town with easy access to the hiills for scenic walks) or Ledbury (timber framed market town).

The New Forest

The Isle of Wight (ferry and train) and you could stop at Portsmouth and visit the historic dockyard on the way

Edinburgh
