Blackpool day trip?

Is Blackpool doable as a day trip from London? Has anyone done this? Is it worth it or too long?

Too long. Is there a specific reason for Blackpool?

MochiPie · 11/08/2025 13:58

Not really just wanted a change from the usual

Easily a 9 hr trip driving and no direct trains. Your entire day would be travelling

chowmeinz · 11/08/2025 13:58

How do you intend to travel? Train or car? Work your journey times and see how long you would have in Blackpool

mamagogo1 · 11/08/2025 14:01

To be honest, why? It’s probably one of the most dire seaside areas in the U.K. only redeeming factor is its dirt cheap which you won’t benefit from for the day and it’s a really long journey from London - from Manchester perhaps for a cheesy day out but not London too far. Any of the south coast resorts perhaps Southend?

One thing Blackpool is not is ‘dirt cheap’

We don’t like pebble beaches

Train says 3 hours and direct

Some of the B and Bs are extremely cheap so if you are set on it you’d be better to stay over.
Other areas on the Fylde coast are much nicer for a beach and seaside experience.
If you want the whole Pleasure Beach, Tower, Tussauds, Trams, Kiss me Quick hat experience then Blackpool it is.

Pancakeflipper · 11/08/2025 14:11

No. Not for a day.

Coconutter24 · 11/08/2025 14:13

6 hours travelling in one day seems a lot. Are you travelling alone?

MochiPie · 11/08/2025 14:17

No will be with teens (one who loves trains so would be looking forward to the journey)

OP posts:
MochiPie · 11/08/2025 14:29

My mistake it’s not direct but 1 change

OP posts:
rose69 · 11/08/2025 14:35

The change is v easy. Local trains take you straight to pleasure beach. Lots to do for a day.

BadActingParsley · 11/08/2025 14:38

We used to travel 3 hours there and back to get from our home town in the Midlands to our nearest sea side resort - which was probably more of a shit hole than Blackpool. But I bloody loved it. If you like trains and sandy beaches go for it.

glassof · 11/08/2025 15:12

You change at Preston. I live in the town and it's not as dire as people love to make out. For a day trip you could go up the tower, on the piers, a walk along the beach. From end of August the illuminations will be on too.

TorroFerney · 11/08/2025 15:14

It’s awful and depressing in my opinion, I always feel so sad on the limited occasions I’ve been there, usually to the theatre which is lovely . Lytham is nicer.

MochiPie · 11/08/2025 15:19

Is it really that bad? Starting to get put off now but people say Margate is rubbish and rundown but me and the kids love it there so is it any worse? Just bored and fancied a change

Blackpool has it's rough parts like most places but has some lovely restaurants and loads of things to do. It's definitely not depressing or dire. There are far worse places in the UK! I would recommend staying over though

tinyspiny · 11/08/2025 15:29

I’d say Margate and Blackpool are on a par but Blackpool is bigger and has more to do. Margate is cheaper and easier to get to from London though .

MochiPie · 11/08/2025 15:32

Thanks so it’s about the same then so would be fine for us then, can’t afford abroad so maybe that’s what people are comparing it to..Or Cornwall which isn’t doable for us as it would take 7 hours 😅

OP posts:
Ilikewinter · 11/08/2025 15:37

If you stay on the front then Blackpool is fine, well you have to look past the homeless, but lets face it, thats the case in many towns/cities these days ..... and theres lots of stuff to do , but that's a long trip! Is there anyway you could stay overnight?

stomachamelon · 11/08/2025 15:37

@MochiPiewhat about Broadstairs if you like Margate? Lovely beach and old seaside type vibe?

namechangeGOT · 11/08/2025 15:44

I’d stay in London if I was you!

bluecurtains14 · 11/08/2025 15:44

Too far and it's quite grim anyway.
