Beach Huts in Mablethorpe or Wells on Sea?

Unorganisedchaos2 · 20/06/2025 12:47

We are staying at a friends for a few days in August, the closest beach to them is Skegness & Id like to hire a beach hut for the day for me, DH and 6 year old DD.

Google has brough up huts in Mablethorpe & Wells on Sea, the ones in Mablethorpe are owned by the local council and a bit cheaper but more basic whereas the ones in Wells on Sea are privately owned and seem a bit more well equipped. Both locations seem to have everything you need, shops, cafes etc

Does anyone know these areas and can give me some tips or any other suggestions?

Where are you staying? Mapplethorpe/Skegness are in Lincolnshire whereas Wells is in Norfolk. Wells is much nicer IMHO but it might be too far away if Skegness is your friends' local beach

Wells has a narrow gauge railway if you or the 6 year old would enjoy it.

MinnieMountain · 20/06/2025 13:06

Mablethorpe will be closer. The narrow country roads to Wells get very busy in the summer.

Pinkybike · 20/06/2025 13:11

The little railway closed a couple of years ago in Wells, there’s now a little vintage bus instead.
The two places are very different, Wells is a small town that has some nice chip shops and pubs to eat in.
The beach is more like an estuary, clean sand but not any good for body boarding etc. The beach huts are privately owned so vary in what they offer. We use Happy huts and they have been lovely.
Mablethorpe is a typical seaside town, arcades, chippys etc, nice beach but I don’t know anything about their beach huts.

Thank you that's really helpful, I've just looked at Happy huts and they are all fully booked, I suppose I've left it too late really but will remember for next year.

What is the sea like for swimming at Wells? If its warm, we would probably just have a paddle really.

Im leaning towards wells as we already have a day in skegness planned to do arcades ets so happy to have something a bit quieter.

Just to warn you that if you are staying in Skegness the drive to Wells-next-the-sea will be around 2.5 hours! I think you maybe looking at a "as the crow flies" proximity finder which thinks you can drive across the Wash (sea) when you'll actually have to drive in land and round

LongRangeDessertGroup · 20/06/2025 13:28

They are quite different in character, Wells being the nicer place in my opinion.

Onthewaytothemountains · 20/06/2025 13:29

Skegness has more to it than arcades!!

Pinkybike · 20/06/2025 13:32

Wells is ok for paddling, it’s difficult to explain but the water is like an estuary that’s flowing into the harbour in the town, so it’s sort of sideways.
We have never seen the actual sea as it’s quite far out ! For kids it’s great, clean and shallow water to play in, it’s one of my favourite places but gets horribly busy in the summer.
Skeggy is a very typical seaside town, arcades, donuts, chips, fairground, boating lake, aquarium, crazy golf 😊
People slag it off but it’s a good day out if you have kids. There’s also the Fairy Dell which is a free outdoor paddling pool which my kids loved !

shiningcuckoo · 20/06/2025 13:34

Sutton on sea just down the coast from mablethorpe used to have beach huts to hire too. A quieter vibe.

Good to know thank you, I'll sit down tonight and look at the routes properly, we didnt want to be driving for more than 2 hours really but we might be able to go home that way

We are staying in Spilsby, open to suggestions of places closer, I just looked at the map and guessed tbh 😁

Try Anderby creek it's a lot quieter beach but I think much better.

soupyspoon · 20/06/2025 13:59

I think you've already found it out but you'll be lucky to be able to find a free beach hut at this time of year now.

soupyspoon · 20/06/2025 13:59

I mean free as in available.

LongRangeDessertGroup · 20/06/2025 14:32

Quite a lot of that stretch of coast is quiet, Huttoft Terrace you can park virtually on the beach but there’s not much there other than sand and a cafe, Chapel St Leonard’s, Anderby Creek, Sutton on Sea all quieter than Skegness.
Winthorpe (Skeg) has a nice cafe if you like cheesecake.

Cleethorpes is about an hour away, it’s a bit livelier than Mablethorpe but the beach huts aren’t actually on the beach so a bit pointless really.

mygrandchildrenrock · 20/06/2025 15:18

Mablethorpe has beach huts at Queens Park. Queens Park has a lovely splash pool, free of charge, a miniature train, a small play park with bouncing castle, climbing frames etc. a boating lake with row boats,
pedalos and motor boats.
All this is next to a blue flag beach. Can you tell I love Mablethorpe!

mygrandchildrenrock · 20/06/2025 15:19

Spilsby is only 25 minutes drive away.

Thank you, I think Im going to book a hut at Queens Park, Im going to struggle to book a private one now and we can go to a quieter beach another day.

PINKYBIKE totally agree with you. I went to Skeg last year, and was pleasantly suprised at how clean it was. There's loads for kids to do, but there's also Gibraltar point for any keen birders.

Pinkybike · 20/06/2025 16:48

@highlandponymummy I’m pleased you enjoyed it, I’ve always thought that my kids were lucky to have Skeggy so close by for days out!
Gibralter point is really nice and usually a lot quieter as there’s a longer walk from the car park.
