LLeyn Peninsula HELP have we made a terrible mistake

GerrardWinstanley · 23/05/2008 11:00

we've booked a cottage somewhere frighteningly remote and it will just be the two of us plus our 1yo for a week.

has anyone got any advice on good day trips around that area? DP and I like a good walk and ruined castles but I guess some of that will be curtailed by a mostly pushchair-bound DD.

I can't even bring myself to think what it will be like if it rains all week...... Someone please ease my panic.

You can see why DP vetoed abroad with a baby now can't you? I'm lists-and-worrying type of holidaymaker.

Um - Criccieth? Castle there, and good icecream...

Fennel · 23/05/2008 11:08

It's lovely there. Lots of places you can go in rainy weather too.

Portmerion
Criccieth castle
there's a nice art gallery and cafe by a National Trust beach at LLanbedrog
Riding stables at Llanbedrog
Caernarvon castle.
I think there are indoor swimming pools and soft play centres at Caernarvon and Bangor.

There are potteries and farms and playgrounds. It's not that remote really.

KatyMac · 23/05/2008 11:11

One of my favourite places to holiday

WilfSell · 23/05/2008 11:12

Lleyn Peninsula: nothing to do? Are you mad woman? Get in your car and visit all the above plus:

Little ffestiniog railway
snowdon
Llanfairpwllgwyngiliogblahblahblah
slate mines
visitor centre at bottom of Snowdon (senile and sleep deprived: name entirely escapes me)
Abersoch to people watch and drool over boats
Harlech castle and sanddunes
Barmouth and millions of other mad little seaside towns with daft amusement arcades

millions of other things to do

OrmIrian · 23/05/2008 11:13

It's beautiful. And it's not really that remote.

nailpolish · 23/05/2008 11:13

cant you cancel it?

I feel much better now. Thank you everyone for the tips and links. Good to have it confirmed that I was being ridiculous. Last year, during my pre-holiday preparation panic,I had to be reminded several times that there were almost certainly shops in Barcelona.

I'll investigate the sling/carrier thing. DD is a very very tall girl so I thought carrying her was out of the question. Some of those options on that site look possible though. Thanks psychobabble. It would be so good not to be limited to pushchair-friendly places.

ah nailpolish, I meant to book it but that was when DD was a still tiny and very calm cuddly bundle and a week somewhere very quiet seemed like heaven. I forgot to take account of her growing up and needing to be entertained. Else there's a lot of shouting. Oh God, the shouting............

lol

youll have a great time. dont worry.

WilfSell · 23/05/2008 13:25

The butterfly farm on anglesey is great too. Beaumaris is kind of nice too and has a shack with manky lobsters sealife centre. Bull's Head (I think) there is a pub/restaurant with rooms. Newborough beach is also lovely. Porthmadog and Borth-y-gest fun for mooching around in a British seasidey way.

God I think there's even a Butlins at Pwllheli (sic) if you're desperate. Unless it has closed down now...

uptomyeyes · 23/05/2008 13:36

Great place to spend your holiday!

Is your dd old enough to go in a child seat on the back of a bike? DH and I used to cycle all over the Lleyn Peninsula and camp. Our absolute favourite place is Aberdaron, you can buy crab off the fishing boats...or if you don't want to prepare it buy fresh dressed local crab in the pub in Aberdaron - lovely. You will see seals playing with lobster pots. Oh I want to go back. Our kids love it too. We saw an octopus once when snorkelling of Lleyn.

Wilfself is right - Newborough beach is lovely and has great toilets/shower facillities in the carpark - but I think it is on Anglesey as opposed to Lleyn.

PandaG · 23/05/2008 13:41

Fab place to holiday - we went there 3 years on the trot with children from 1 to 5 1/2. Blackrock sands easy as you can drive straight on as Beetty said, but POrth Oer (Whistling Sands) is stunning.

WilfSell · 23/05/2008 13:41

Yes. I was imagining a bit a driving around involved...

Grav1 · 23/05/2008 18:12

The Butlins is no longer a Butlins. It is now a Haven site.

pooka · 23/05/2008 18:25

I stayed for a weekend at an incredibly remote cottage in Porthdinllaen (am aware that spelling not great), just near morfa nefyn and the Ty Coch pub. Had to be taken to the cottage from the car park by landrover.
Was beautiful, like breathtakingly beautiful - views of Anglesey and peculiarly millpond like sea. Felt rather like being next to a scandinavian fjord.

Lucycat · 23/05/2008 18:30

Oh it is simply beautiful - in fact I'm beginning to wish we'd booked there for this next week instead of going down to Devon (looking at Saturday's forecast anyway)

There is a lovely big new Asda in Pwhelli so you can 'supermarket' shop all you like!

Lucycat · 23/05/2008 18:32

pooka You need the Ty coch webcam - guaranteed to cheer you up on a bad day!

here you go

Great pint of beer on the beach while the dd's played in the sand.

pooka · 23/05/2008 18:34

Yes, I've seen the webcam - is a great way to relax.

I was amazed by how beautiful it was there. Absolutely stunned. Had never been there before, and it was in March, so crisp but fine weather and practically deserted beach. Gorgeous.

IdrisTheDragon · 23/05/2008 18:35

We used to go there on holiday when I was small. Brings back very happy memories for me (and I'm sure it wasn't sunny all te time )

cornsilk · 23/05/2008 18:36

We used to always stay round there. There's a 'rabbit farm' nearby (or there was a few years ago) which had all sorts of animals and puppies the children could cuddle. My ds's loved it.

pooka · 23/05/2008 18:38

www.tycoch.co.uk/WallHome.htm

the cottage we stayed in is in the top left hand corner here. Was great. I stayed with my father, step mother and 2 brothers, because was my great uncle's memorial service at St. Tudwen's church. Was amazing.
