We are three working mums who need a break to celebrate the end of cancer treatment for one of us and have a girly night away. Has to be accessible from Brighton and Manchester by train and do a one night midweek package....suggestions please!! Cost not a huge issue but needs to be reasonable. What really matters is the experience and feel of the place.

Am working away so will check tomorrow for your gems of wisdom. Am getting tired of trawling the internet and I know that one you wonderful MNers will no doubt have the perfect solution!

Champney?s, Tring, Hertforshire

The original Champneys resort underwent a spectacular £14 million refurbishment in 2003, which restored the mansion to its former glory. Its setting within 170 acres of parkland also makes it an idyllic location. New additions include a 25m pool and spa area, new treatment rooms including a couples treatment room, and a new 1,600 sq ft gym and studios. A wide range of over a 100 treatments and therapies are offered ? from advanced facials and manicures/pedicures, to relaxing aromatherapy massage and slimming, shaping and toning treatments. And to fill your time there?s even a range of activities to do ? including aerobics, arts and crafts, croquet, guided country walks, Pilates, Tai Chi, tennis, and yoga. Serenity Spa, Seaham Hall, Northumberland

The former home of Lord Byron is now an award-winning hotel and spa and is surrounded by beautiful Northumbrian countryside. Serenity Spa is inspired by Feng Shui, and there are over 50 different treatments on offer here. The spa has a distinctly oriental theme and provides you with traditional Japanese and Thai massage therapies ? plus there?s a hydrotherapy pool, which has wonderfully invigorating jets and massage streams, and an outdoor jacuzzi, which can be enjoyed no matter what the weather is like. Also, if you decide to leave the spa at any point, you can visit the beach nearby or follow in Byron?s footsteps on one of his favourite walks through Seaham Dene. Room prices are from £195 per night.

If you?re looking to explore further afield, though, the hotel can organise off-site jaunts such as ballooning, golf, horse riding or rock climbing. There is even a substantial DVD library collection to help you occupy some of your time when you?re tired after all your activities! Room prices are from £250 per night.

These are complemented by a steam room, a sauna, a 20m indoor pool, a whirlpool spa and a plunge pool. What about Hoar Cross Hall, I went there about 10 years ago and really liked it.

MummyDoIt · 23/05/2008 17:32

Another vote for Champneys. They also have spas at Henlow on the Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire border and in Ashby-de-la-Zouche.

Pennyhill PArk is just fantastic-far better than Champneys etc.Spa is awesome-ice cave, aromatherapy steam rooms, underwater music in the indoor pool, fab pool which goes from inside to out but is lovely and warm, heated massage beds, foot spas, underwater massage-I could go on.

The spa also happens to be attached to a very lovely hotel too-very luxurious feel-can't speak highly enough of it.

TillyScoutsmum · 23/05/2008 17:48

Hoar Cross Hall is lovely and is nearer to the north

ZZMum · 23/05/2008 17:49

the belfry in warwickshire has a great spa -- had a very good weekend there recently -the prices of the treatments was a lot more reasonable that PennyHillPark and the spa was just as good with the various rooms - ice, rain etc
