Traveling from East Midlands to Bude in August this year. Will be leaving stupid early (like 3am) to get as far as we can before we hit traffic. Hopefully in Bude for breakfast 😂

Looking for tips on places to stop on the way there and back. What are the best motorway services?

Any good tips in general for travel to/from Cornwall in August?

We’re doing a very similar route so will be interested to see what people say.

Bridgewater services and Exeter are usually very good. Good luck with the journey 😁

Gloucester services.

Are you asking for a stop for breakfast or a stop for something to do do/see en route?

Cornishclio · 10/05/2025 20:17

We live in Cornwall and travel to Coventry to visit family. Gloucester works well on way up and Sedgemoor on way back or Taunton Deane

On the way there I think it likely be too early for day trip stops?

Will probably leave in the evening to come back too.

I think stops for breaks, refreshments and snacks? Clean loos that sort of thing.

There’s a retail park at Taunton just off the m5 with places like Starbucks, kfc, sainsburys.

Toastandjam16 · 10/05/2025 20:45

Disagree about Bridgewater. It's awful.

Gloucester is lovely but Sedgemoor or Michaelwood are fine, not exciting but fine, further down.

Goodness. What did MrsMostyToasty say?

On a 4.5hr journey Id only stop once so just pick a convenient services. Gloucester nicest, Michaelwood perfectly ok.

(Bridgwater in Somerset has no middle E. Sorry, had to say it!)

Yes, not looking to stop often, but I have a weak bladder and two children who get fidgety, so looking for options 😊

I despise Bridgewater so much I give it an unnecessary middle E to show my contempt. 😎

rosydreams · 10/05/2025 21:56

i am going to bude in august too. Cant wait but its gonna be such a fun drive we are traveling from hertfordshire with a 7 month old rip haha

NCTDN · 10/05/2025 22:01

we’re avoiding the Saturday and travelling v v early on the Sunday morning - hope that’sa good plan?
On the way back we’ll prob leave late on the Saturday on the theory that most people will be there for the weekend.

Snoopy111 · 10/05/2025 22:13

ikea at Exeter is very near the M5 and nicer than the services- also good for breakfast

CookietheCat · 10/05/2025 22:24

Why don’t you come off junction 27 (Tiverton) and head down the North Devon link road to Bude. Much nicer journey for the last 1.5/2 hours. Stop at Quince Honey Farm at south Molton for good food and play areas.

MissAndrey · 10/05/2025 22:25

Blaise Castle on the outskirts of Bristol is lovely. Cheddar Gorge is another option.

Oh, and Gloucester Services, obvs!

aSpanielintheworks · 10/05/2025 22:31

Gloucester is nice but we always aim to be the other side of Bristol by 8am otherwise it starts getting very busy, so Sedgemoor is always our first stop (in Midlands)

Not Bridgewater, those services are shocking.

If you are leaving at 3am, one comfort stop should do it. Should be in Bude for 8 to 8:30am, earlier if bladders hold and you come straight down.

shellyleppard · 11/05/2025 08:16

@HelpMeGetThrough its been a few years since I did the long run
