LONDON - Hotel Recommendations

Going for a weekend to London in May with my daughter to celebrate her 21st. We are going to see Moulin Rouge and looking for good hotel recommendations and other must do things.

Travelling down by train on Friday and back on Sunday, Moulin Rouge is the Saturday.

Going to do one of the bus tours to see the landmarks and am thinking of ABBA Voyage but the tickets are very expensive so wondering if it was worth it? Trying to fit in some shopping and wanted to go to the ice bar but that’s looks to be closed down now?

Never been to London so we are really excited but no idea where to stay or what is a must do.

All suggestions greatly appreciated, thank u xx

What is your hotel budget OP?

Cynic17 · 23/03/2025 16:37

You will probably pay minimum £200 per night even for a Premier Inn type hotel. I am worried that if you think ABBA Voyage is expensive, then hotel prices will shock you.

If it is after the end of term, you could consider university halls of residence, which are good value.

Or try Z hotels - the rooms are very small, but comfy. You do have to pay upfront tho.

Another asking about budget? We just spent £124 for a double room at the King's Cross Central Travelodge because we were catching an early train. In London I usually go for a big chain outlet at the best possible location - eg I have stayed at the Covent Garden Travelodge because of the astoundingly perfect location. Need to book ASAP, those sorts of places fill up. But there is zero glamour involved (although the King's Cross Central one has a nice bar, it's an Edwardian family mansion with a lovely bay window).

Budget?

TourangaLeila · 23/03/2025 16:50

I think London prices may shock you op.

However I recently stayed at the hoxton holborn which was very nice, clean and comfortable. Minimum of £200 a night though.

SpinningLikeAGirlInABrandNewDress · 23/03/2025 16:51

Was thinking £250ish a night for a hotel but wasn’t sure if that was too little. I’m thinking Abba was expensive as they are advertised as starting at £55 but tickets no where near that. Thanks

I have no recommendations for hotels, but have heard that the Premier Inn at County Hall (London Eye) can be very good value if you are lucky with dates etc.

One thing I would book is the Sky Garden rooftop. Have a look, it's free but must be booked in advance. You could have celebratory drinks (not free!) and/or dinner there too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/03/2025 16:55

Try Premier Inn Hub. The rooms are small but they are clean and bright, with decent breakfast. The Kings Cross and Marylebone ones are both good.

harridan50 · 23/03/2025 16:57

No ten Manchester Street in marylebone

Imperfectpolly · 23/03/2025 16:58

Were staying next week in premier inn earls court. 2 adults, 2 children, dinner and breakfast for £150. It's v close to the tube so easy to get to where we want to go.

What sites do you plan to see with the bus tour? And what is the cost? With a good walking route you could knock a lot of the big ones off in a couple of hours. Someone here wrote me a dummy guide to using the tube the first time I went, it's super easy and I'd use this to save money v the bus tour.

It all depends really on what you want to see Though.

I was about to suggest this, the Shoreditch location is also good and decent value for money, 20 mins via the tube from Kings Cross hub by Premier Inn | London Spitalfields Brick Lane. Have a look at The London Pass® | Save up to 49% on attractions, if there are multiple attractions/places you'd like to visit you'd probably save money buying that rather than individual tickets. Also is a good list of what there is to see/visit!

Abba Voyage is amazing

How much are ABBA tickets coming up for?
Normal ones either seated or standing. (Not the booths)
I’ve been a few times and I’d say it’s well worth it. It’s a great experience.

As for hotels, it’s worth signing up to Secret Escapes and seeing what offers they have for your dates. But also then x-ref with booking.com and the hotel direct. As I’ve often found both to be cheaper than SE, but you can get an idea of some decent, centrally located hotels from SE.

DaisyDando · 23/03/2025 17:02

I really like the Doubletree (Hilton) hotel in Islington. It’s not far from the tube and it’s always been a good price. I’ve not seen Moulin Rouge but I’ve heard good things. You can walk to the Southbank for cocktails. I haven’t seen Voyage but the Olympic site around there is a nice place to hang out.
If you fancy west London then I love the Anya Cafe and Sloane Square. Battersea Power Station is usually nice and I have never not spotted a celeb there, although not A list yet. I hope you have a lovely time.

Bohemond23 · 23/03/2025 17:05

Premier Inn Tate Modern is great. Go to Caravan around the corner for breakfast.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 23/03/2025 17:11

No trip to London is complete for me without a mooch around Liberty Of London and Fortnum and Mason.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 23/03/2025 17:14

I love the Mousetrap it's not cheap but it's been on for 70 plus years for a reason!

Wowzel · 23/03/2025 17:19

I like Sea Containers and if you book ahead you should get a room for 250 a night. Over looks the river, lovely to walk along the south bank in the evening

YummyCookie · 23/03/2025 17:29

When we go, we go in to Kings Cross and usually stay at the Premier Inn St Pancras. You can leave your cases there on departure day and collect them later before we get the train home. You generally know what you are getting with a Premier Inn.

We’ve never done a bus tour. I can imagine it could be pretty slow going with the traffic. We just use the tube. Moulin Rouge is brilliant!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 23/03/2025 17:46

Citymapper is the best app to help you plan the best transport, including walking.

PullTheBricksDown · 23/03/2025 17:47

Agree with both Sea Containers (bit more fancy) and Premier Inn St Pancras (good budget choice) as picks.

PermanentTemporary · 23/03/2025 21:13

For things to do - tbh the National Theatre is a no-brainer for me. I've seen multiple fantastic productions there at stupidly low prices, and the whole South Bank complex is great.

huhpuh · 23/03/2025 21:59

My daughter and I just stayed at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge - £225 per night B&B with a nice pool and spa. Nearest tube is Waterloo.

5foot5 · 26/03/2025 08:43

We have stayed at Premier Inn Kings Cross a few times and always been perfectly comfortable there. Usually find Premier Inns a reliable known quantity

ItisIbeserk · 29/03/2025 10:34

Just a warning that the Premier Inn Hub rooms are very snug. Unless you and your daughter are very close, I’d avoid. The beds are a small double size.
