York with a 15 year old

We're off to York this weekend with our 15 year old son. We have lots planned for during the day but we have 2 evenings to fill.
We have food booked from 7pm on Saturday which means we might not be able to book onto a ghost walk due to timings.
Obviously we can't just go and sit in a bar with him so can anyone recommend any fun but teenfriendly things to do after dark in York.

Bump
for the afternoon crowd.
I really don't want to be stuck
in our room with nothing to do......

York Minster did have a lights show projecting onto it after 6pm in February when I was there, which might still be on.
The evenings are lighter now so you could continue to do the Cats Tour which I highly recommend, it's free and fun way to get to learn the city.

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 13:49

Thank you
we all love a walk so that sounds like a good start.

A walk round the walls is great, and there are several 'sef-guided' walks you can do that give you chance to explore all the snickleways.

There are a couple of Escape Rooms in the city centre and two cinemas - City Screen and Everyman. There might be something suitable on a the theatres - Opera House or the Theatre Royal, or The Barbican?

The York Dungeon sometimes does eveny events as well.

Hole in the wand is a Harry potter themed crazy golf, open till 7.

ForAvidTealQuoter · 13/03/2025 14:21

You could look at doing the ghost tour but it may already be booked out.

Wigtopia · 13/03/2025 14:23

Jorvik Viking centre?

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 14:26

Thank you
but we've done it before and I was looking for something to do after around 8pm

Saffywall , thank you. That sounds like a good idea. He loves walking in the dark and added " spookiness" would be a great addition

Ah I've just seen Valhalla (a viking themed rock pub) is open to under 18s till 9pm - might be fun?

IceIceBabyBump · 13/03/2025 14:38

Ghost bus.

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 14:42

Ooo
the Viking themed bar sounds interesting

Hole in the Wand is fun.
Wander to SPARK* for food and drink outlets in containers with quite a cool vibe and some tables you can lounge about at
Lots of ghost tours start from the Minster at different times.
There are street entertainers sometimes in Coney Street or in Kings Square so you can just walk about and watch
I would just find a quiet pub or the hotel bar to play some cards.

SPARK*

SPARK* is an outdoor community space, home to some of York’s most exciting start-ups working in food, retail, arts and social enterprise.

River cruise went down surprisingly well with my son

We still joke about me having a snooze on the cruise on the Ouse !

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 14:59

Thank you
there are some really good ideas here. There seems to be no danger of being stuck in our room!

Sorry but I wouldn't recommend Spark at all. It'll be absolutely freezing in this weather.

Spark is awful

The OP wants places to go to that are teen friendly after dinner. My teens like it. I assume the Op and family will be dressed for the weather. Where would you suggest suits teenagers in York on an evening?

Doubleraspberry · 13/03/2025 15:53

Ghost Bus tour rather than a walking tour. The latest departure is 7.30pm.

Ted27 · 13/03/2025 15:59

Personally as he is 15 I would have dinner later for they can do some of the things suggested which may start around 7 and last an hour or so.

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 16:47

We have dinner booked for 7.
possibly we could move that back. But he is always starving so that may be a challenge!!

OP posts:
Ted27 · 13/03/2025 17:21

Dinner at 6 then ?

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 17:38

I think we'll check out Sparks during the day then pop there after dinner with a pack of cards for a drink and maybe a bit more food for the boy. We will also definitely do the cat trail which sounds like something we can all enjoy. Thank you for all the ideas.

OP posts:
Doubleraspberry · 13/03/2025 20:21

For the cat trail you need to pick up a leaflet at the Cat Gallery in the day.

I’d also suggest axe throwing at Hilt but it’s something else that finishes around 7pm.

Dizzymaclizzy · 13/03/2025 20:54

Thank you
I will look for that

Yes I know what the Op was asking. I don't think Spark is good for anyone (teenagers or otherwise) in this weather because it's freezing cold.

If you look closely, you'll see I added the suggestion of a ghost bus to the other great suggestions on here.
