Single occupancy hotel surcharge

Just looking at prices for a Glasgow hotel. I'll be visiting my dd who's at uni there. There appears to be a surcharge added for single occupancy rooms. We're talking about a difference between £169 for a room (for 2 people) versus £203 for a room for one person.

That's a massive hike. The single occupancy includes breakfast but the double occupancy only gives it an option. There appears to be no possibility of single occupancy without breakfast.

I'd be treating my daughter to breakfast outside of the hotel so won't want it anyway.

What's to stop me booking a double occupancy room at the cheaper price and just me turning up?

Just book it as double occupancy.

thesaskedminger · 20/01/2025 20:23

Why don't you just book a hotel that charges per room? That's much more commonplace

just make totally sure that the 169 is not PER PERSON for the double occupancy room!

thesaskedminger · 20/01/2025 20:24

Sorry I thought when you paid for single occupancy it was because you paid per person not per room. That makes no sense. It used to be that double occupancy would attract t say 2 x £100 so they would change £150 for a single. We only really see this in older hotels, more so those who cater for coach parties of people where they lose money on singles.

JimHalpertsWife · 20/01/2025 20:25

Huh? That makes no sense. Surely the 169 is per person?

AsTearsGoBy · 20/01/2025 20:28

Which hotel? Very odd. I often stay in Glasgow and have never come across an additional charge for single occupancy.

BeaAndBen · 20/01/2025 20:29

Because they are getting two lots of £169 versus one lot of £203. They’d much prefer the former to the latter.

viralviv · 20/01/2025 20:37

It definitely says 1 room for £169 with number of guests x 2. Looking at it again though, it says 'Your Choices' and details 'good breakfast £15.50. Does this mean I will be charged £31 even if I don't want breakfast there?

Here's the pic. It's the Social Hub, Glasgow via booking.com

That is odd. I was recently researching hotels in Glasgow for a trip later this year and they all charged on a per room basis (some charged separately for breakfast, but that was typically the only difference in price for different occupancies). Like others have said, are you sure the lower amount isn’t per person?

See the pic I've just posted. It definitely says £169

Yes, I see now - I crossposted with you.

Is it the same if you look on the hotel’s website?

AsTearsGoBy · 20/01/2025 20:44

Just look at an alternative hotel. There are heaps of decent places in Glasgow which overwhelmingly charge by the room.

Yes but a higher price for both (on a/c of not having the Booking.com Genius discount)

Just book the double occupancy and then add breakfast at the hotel for one person

ChannelFiveDrama · 20/01/2025 20:47

In the first option breakfast is an add on. So I would just book that and turn up with your daughter if you're meeting her even if she's not staying.

VonHally · 20/01/2025 20:48

Agree that the breakfast is payable on site if you want it for the first one.

JimHalpertsWife · 20/01/2025 20:50

So it's 169 for room only, for 1 or 2. However they also offer a single occ incl breakfast for 205.

So just book the 169 room only.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 20/01/2025 20:50

Looks like a glitch in their Matrix…. I would give them a bell as it may well be that someone has input the wrong info somewhere. I know it’s more expensive for both rooms in their website but does the same thing happen if you book directly?

summerlovingvibes · 20/01/2025 20:51

I'd just book the 169 room

Can you recommend any? Central area or around Sauchiehall St?

JimHalpertsWife · 20/01/2025 21:02

Just book the 169 room OP.

Just book the double occupancy and then add breakfast at the hotel for one person

So they're not likely to make me pay for the breakfast if I don't want it?

PullTheBricksDown · 20/01/2025 21:09

I've stayed at the Premier Inn Buchanan Galleries more than once and it's been good. Breakfast is an add on there so it's easy not to get it.

No why would they?

They offer a room only reservation - book it.
