UK Birthday Break / Experience for Children Under 10

My DC have decided to pass on birthday parties this year and would like to go away somewhere in the UK. Amongst others, we've done Legoland, Harry Potter and London sightseeing, which were big hits, but looking for something different. Doesn't have to be a theme park - could be an area with lots of child-friendly things to do. Looking for a few days away. Love the coast, but a small city is a possibility.

They are quite outdoorsy DC and enjoy exploring. Interested in history, but also anything fun! Considered Centre Parcs, but school holiday prices are very high. Ideally it would feel a bit special/out of the ordinary, as it is for their birthdays. Any ideas?

What about a zoo experience? Feed the animals or young keeper kind of thing?

WeeWigglet · 02/01/2025 12:17

How old are the kids & what's the budget? Xx

HalfaCider · 02/01/2025 12:22

Possibly, but they aren't the most confident around animals!

They are all between 4 and 9. Budget depends on activity. Ideally up to £1000 for a few nights, but a bit flexible.

We had a brilliant holiday in Northumberland - castles to explore, beautiful beaches and boat rides to see seals and puffins. Alnwick Gardens and Lilidorei were also a big hit.

We had a fab holiday in Whitby last year. Cute air BnB by the harbour/ quay.

Also really enjoyed a trip to Longleat.

Have fun

Chester? The zoo, the Roman experience, Sick to Death, walk the walls, lots of places to eat ... great place for a short break

I took my teen dd to the Manor House & Ashbury Resort in Devon for her birthday. It's nothing fancy & the rooms are v basic but we had such a wonderful time. Activities on all day, evening entertainment & a wonderful spa that kids can use

25% off stays booked soon for a safari adventure

Aviemore and the polar bears at the highland wildlife park were a hit with our DC. We went in February and also went sledging.

I know you have done Legoland uk but the original is often similarly priced.

London is always a hit.

I second Ironbridge / Blists Hill!

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/01/2025 13:38

Alton Towers? The hotel is pricey but we always stayed at a fabulous b and b a mile away (The Chained Oak).

stichguru · 02/01/2025 13:39

Blackpool? There's load to do there. We've stayed in the Village Hotel for a couple of nights - indoor&outdoor pools, gym etc. Rides, arcades, zoo, soft plays, and Blackpool tower, crazy golf, ....

This is very appealing - heard good things about Northumberland. Where do you think a good base would be?

Yes, HWP is fantastic.

Someone mentioned Blackpool. There is a lot to do but I really wouldn’t take children out after about 7.30 pm unless you don’t mind them seeing fights, people throwing up and a whole lot of bad behaviour.
We live fairly nearby but our adult kids would rather travel 10 miles in the other direction than spend a night out there.

We stayed near Alnwick which was a good base for us.

Weekend away in a caravan? Haven is great. We enjoyed Seashore in Great Yarmouth

Funf · 03/01/2025 10:58

Everyone should do Blackpool at least once for the lights and a show. But its not for everyone
