Where can we go

I have travelled widely (mostly EU only)

I haven't got much money at all now and I want to treat my children to a UK holiday and wondering where a family of 4 can go. Somewhere nice, friendly as we are not white.

Lake District comes to mind only because I have seen and heard a lot about it on TV

It depends what kind of holiday you like (beach, city etc), and where you're starting from/how far you're happy to drive/train it? We're a family of 5 and we're going to Northumberland from Manchester. It's a really beautiful coast line and lovely people too.

RappersNeedChapstick · 28/07/2024 19:38

I suppose it depends on how far you want your travel and what you enjoy doing?

drspouse · 28/07/2024 19:47

Our DD is not white and we do find Lake District tourism relatively mixed ethnically. Some of the tourism is literature related eg Japanese tourists love Beatrix Potter (and the Brontes, if you fancy Haworth as well). There are also a lot of Indian families, I think for the same type of experience as they look for in India itself: beautiful mountains and less hot in the summer!

For a seaside resort, the SE is probably most mixed, we've never felt uncomfortable per se in the SW but we have often been the only family with any non white members at attractions in Devon/Dorset though we do like it and we're going again this year (we do also like Cornwall but we live in the NW so it's quite far).

The Lake District is beautiful, spent two weeks there last year. Do you enjoy walking?

Singleandproud · 28/07/2024 19:54

Too late for this year, but if you want something a bit different and cheap next year, Rock Watch the youth geologist society do a week fossil hunting in August staying at a field studies centre with food, instructors and transport once at the centre included. I'm not sure on the diversity of the group though.

If travelling a good distance it's worth comparing rail travel bought in advance with a Railcard compared to the cost of driving you might be pleasantly surprised and the train journey makes it more of an adventure.

@whoknowsknows have you tried the youth hostel association??? The family room accommodation is brilliant and they are usually near tourist spots

GodWhereartthou · 29/07/2024 22:47

Never heard of them and never used them.

DuesToTheDirt · 29/07/2024 23:02

When do you want to go? If it's for this summer, you might have left it a bit late for the Lake District, it's very popular.

drspouse · 30/07/2024 08:03

I think most people just book accommodation and drive to be honest.
There's not much more to it.
The youth hostels are generally booked up by this time though.

Not really heard of a package holiday to the Lake District from the UK. Most people will book accommodation and sort their travel separately as a PP said.

What sort of accommodation are you after?

Mycatsmudge · 30/07/2024 08:29

Are you driving or using public transport? as the latter is quite poor and expensive in the Lake District. If the former book a cottage from somewhere like Booking.com. If you’re not a hiker then you can explore the towns and lakes. There are also quite a few national trust properties to visit in the Lake District including Beatrix Potters house.

City breaks are also good especially if you’re using public transport to get there. I like York, Oxford,Liverpool,Durham,Chester,Edinburgh. Cheapest places to stay centrally tend to family rooms in budget hotels or youth hostels.

I’m not white and have travelled extensively around the Uk with my dh and dcs in the last 20 years and no one has behaved negatively towards me because of my colour. Though I did get a feeling last year in Dorset they just weren’t keen on tourists in general as I was in a shop and the staff dealt with the locals and tourists differently giving the former preferential treatment.

I feel North Wales would give you better value.
Some ideas here

The Lakes has very few beaches and is higher rainfall.
This website can be a good source of cheaper deals on privately owned caravans.

Have look at Airbnb for prices. Book 2 weeks, get a couple of guidebooks. Look at places they recommend and start pla ning. There are places to eat and shop in towns and villages. Also specialist shops with shoes and clothes if you need to buy anything.
I've been to the Lakes several times, there's so much to do and see there.

stmartins60 · 31/07/2024 20:39

There are lots of caravan parks that have great facilities for families -- some on the Furness peninsular offer very good value and close to the Lake District too .

CuteCillian · 31/07/2024 20:41

The Lakes is beautiful but not known as a cheap option.

On top of accommodation, the pubs and cafes are usually at the higher end of UK holiday locations.

Soccermumamir · 02/08/2024 19:58

We love the Lake District and going again next weekend 🙂

whoknowsknows · 13/08/2024 08:42

Thank you all for your suggestions
But I am looking at booking Airbnb in Windermere and see what the area is got to offer.

Do you think Windermere is a good place to lodge and explore the Lakes?

bubblesummerxx · 13/08/2024 09:04

Cornwall looks like a lovely place always wanted to go lol x

Funf · 13/08/2024 09:07

Its busy but fine and ideal for what you want, personally we like Keswick, but staying in Windermere you can access all of the lakes easily

I would go for Keswick. My favourite place in the Lakes!

For what? There are lots of different attractions and things to do. Prices will be on their websites. Or walking is free!

LeftWhisker · 13/08/2024 09:49

I found Windermere very busy and congested. If you have car I would book something roughly in that area. We had 2 weeks on the other side of Windermere in Julyb 2022 and it was quiet. We enjoyed walks all over lakes. It is a matter of driving somewhere and it doesn't matter that much where you stay.
