Where can we go

I have travelled widely (mostly EU only)

I haven't got much money at all now and I want to treat my children to a UK holiday and wondering where a family of 4 can go. Somewhere nice, friendly as we are not white.

Lake District comes to mind only because I have seen and heard a lot about it on TV

We go to the Lakes often. It's friendly and the tourists are widely ethnically mixed these days. Windermere is a good base for a first visit, with a station that links to the west coast mainline. And there are buses from there too, but it's easier if you have a car.

We do a mix of hotels and self-catering. Neither are cheap in summer. There are a number of sites that offer "cottages".

Entry to attractions and properties isn't cheap, but still half what the price would be in London. And walking's free. Get the Komoot free app and choose from 100s.

Thank you all for your suggestions
But I am looking at booking Airbnb in Windermere and see what the area is got to offer.

Do you think Windermere is a good place to lodge and explore the Lakes?

Windermere is lovely but dies get quite busy. We've just got back from Ambleside in the lakes and it was perfect. We then went through onto Grasmere also which was heaven.
