Pembrokeshire/Tenby…..things to do and see?

Off to Tenby in a weeks time with older teen DD’s (both autistic), looking for quirky places to visit, we love wildlife but dd1 can’t walk too far, castles, history ,coastline and small sea side villages rather than busier places although we will explore Tenby. Also looking for places to eat, Dd1 is fussy so needs to be somewhere that has some simple options (chips) but also some more interesting options (sea food would be good)?

If it's wet then there is a pottery painting cafe in Narbeth which is fun called the Creative Cafe. They'll post your work to you after it has been fired. Best to reserve a table at busy times.

SPOILER ALERT - don't read if you haven't read/watched all of Harry Potter (and one day want to!)

XXXXXX

At Freshwater West beach about an hours (beautiful) drive from Tenby you can visit Dobby's grave.

You have to work your way over sand dunes to find it but when you do, oh what a sight! A huge pile of stones people have decorated and left there. Lots of socks too! It was lovely looking at all the stones with pictures and messages on. A must for any Harry Potter fan.

There's quite a bit of scrambling up over high sand dunes so depends on the type of mobility issues. Use WhatThreeWords app to help you find it. It's not obvious but the hunt made it all the more special.

As well as the grave, it's a lovely place to go. The beach is isolated and desolate. We went one evening in August and there was hardly anyone there. Watched an incredible sunset (first time seeing a sunset over the sea as we usually holiday on the East coast) and it was magical. A long drive, but I'm so glad we did it.

Pembroke castle, very interesting and a great tour when we went. Love Pembrokeshire.

I plan on visiting Dobbys grave. Dd1 used to be a huge Harry Potter fan (she’s now studying English lit) and dd2 loves the films so they would probably like to see it even if it involves a bit of walking.

Whereabouts are you staying OP? I love Pembrokeshire but it is big and for some things you have to get around the estuary so I find what I do depends where I am.

If you’re going in a few weeks, you won’t get onto Skomer anyway, as it’s sold out for most of the summer (they limit visitors to protect the puffins and other birds). The boat trip around Skomer is excellent though - puffins everywhere! They will be around until about September.

My personal favourite places to visit (and I head to Pembrokeshire most months!) are St Davids, Solva and Porthgain (excellent fish and chips here!) to the north, plus Stackpole / Barafundle, West Angle, Stack Rocks / Green Bridge of Wales (check the firing range isn’t operating though!), Manorbier and the Freshwaters to the south. You’re quite likely to see seals at Stack Rocks.

Narberth is lovely for a mooch around, and as PP have said, Carew is lovely too.

Skomer isn’t booked up, not for the hour cruise anyway. We won’t be going onto the island as dd won’t manage. Hoping we can see enough from the boat trip. I will book it later today after talking to dd1.

Hoping to visit St David’s and surrounding areas. We are only there for the week so I will need to try and cram a lot in after reading all these suggestions.

we were at Donny's grave last year - it's a nice beach and the grave itself is only 5/10 mins walk from the car park
Easy to spot from the cluster of people there!

That’s what I meant, sorry - the landing trips are well booked, but the hour cruise is usually available, and definitely worth it. Last time I went on it (last May) the puffins had just come back and I saw seals too.

The boat people are really helpful at helping you on and off too - at low tide it’s a bit more challenging for the less able, but very doable. Also - if you're a National Trust member, you can park for free there, as well as at many other places in the county.

Near Martins Haven (where you get the boat) there’s also Marloes (great cafe called Runwayskiln) and Dale, where theres also a lovely cafe overlooking the water. Worth a visit if you’re going to Skomer anyway.

Pembrokeshire is my favourite place in the world, and I’m back on Friday!

Ahh we have just come back from a long weekend in Tenby and loved it! Albeit we were with a 2 year old 😂 but we ate breakfast at the seaview cafe which had stunning views of the beach. We went to Folly Farm which was genuinely the best value for money I’ve ever spent, but mostly ambled around town looking in quaint little shops. It’s a gorgeous place.

Oldraver · 18/06/2024 13:08

I would say if she has mobility problems getting onto the boat could be difficult as it's a bit of a scramble

But yea, Skomer Island is a four hour trip

This is now closed - it's a cafe called Stopio
Served great food

Caldey Island is lovely but she would need to be able to get on the boat.Probably easier to do from Castle Beach than the harbour. GO and have a chat with the boatmen the day before you want to go as they would be able to suggest best time for easier boarding (it is tide dependent so very high tide board down slippery steps to boat and very low tide you might need to transfer from boat to landing craft before getting onto the island. Once there its lovely - just a gentle walk to the village green.

Pembroke Castle is amazing.

I like Manorbier -a great little castle and an easy access beach with lots of flat rocks to sit on.

PandoraRocks · 01/07/2024 23:45

Manor Wildlife Park is great, especially the lemurs. Carew boot sale, if you're into to that sort of thing, is the best in West Wales.
