Pembrokeshire/Tenby…..things to do and see?

Off to Tenby in a weeks time with older teen DD’s (both autistic), looking for quirky places to visit, we love wildlife but dd1 can’t walk too far, castles, history ,coastline and small sea side villages rather than busier places although we will explore Tenby. Also looking for places to eat, Dd1 is fussy so needs to be somewhere that has some simple options (chips) but also some more interesting options (sea food would be good)?

Broadhaven beach is stunning and when we were there the water was full of tiny non-stinging jellyfish that sparkle while they swim. Loads of wild flowers in the dunes. And Bosherton lily ponds also beautiful (though you might not want to walk all round, the top end is pretty near the Bosherton carpark.

Take lots of change! Lots of the car pars have pay byphone - but no signal!

Carew Castle is great too, very impressive. And the nearby tidal mill (joint entry) is also fun.

MinnieMountain · 16/06/2024 19:09

Manorbier castle and beach.

The Stone Crab in Saundersfoot.

Lovemusic82 · 16/06/2024 19:34

Thank you.
Also looking for advice on visiting Skomer? Dd1 has some mobility issues so I’m guessing we are better off doing the one hour cruise rather than going in to the island. Has anyone done the Skomer cruise? It’s saying I need to book but I’m worried about weather conditions as I don’t have good sea legs.

I second the Stone Crab in Saundersfoot. It is tiny so you will need to pre book.

Alwaystired23 · 16/06/2024 19:51

I like The Harbwr, for food there's one in Tenby and saundersfoot.

candycane222 · 16/06/2024 19:58

It's a long walk on skomer and a lot of steps. Not sure if there is a shorter route to the place where there are most puffins for people with mobility difficulties (they generally send people round the long way so each boatload gets spread out), you'd have to ask. But I don't think there is an alternative to the steps. Pretty sure youd have to book, but they won't go out if its really bad weather -again check re refunds .

A trip to Caldey - you could just walk to the main green which is a gentle walk on a path. This time of year it should be quiet.
Scolton Manor
Picton Castle
Upton Castle Gardens
Narberth isn't a seaside town but it has lots of lovely shops and places to eat
Milford Marina (on a sunny day) nice little shops, lots of boats to look at and places to eat (including a MacDonalds if that would make DS happy)
Pembroke Castle
Lower Town near Fishguard is very picturesque if you end up North of the county
Bosherston Beach (also called Broad Haven South)
Freshwater East beach
Freshwater West beach if they are Harry Potter fans

mallow · 16/06/2024 20:03

Forgot to say MadTom restaurant in Narberth specialises in seafood

mallow · 16/06/2024 20:04

Also Colby Woodland Gardens which are close to Amroth beach

clarepetal · 16/06/2024 20:06

Cauldey Island. Catch a boat over, and it's a lovely walk round. Manorbier Castle and beach are beautiful. Laugharne isn't far, walk past the castle and see the house Dylan Thomas lived in. Have a lovely time!

BestIsWest · 16/06/2024 20:11

I second the Harbwr. Their fish and chips are great.

Lovemusic82 · 16/06/2024 20:23

Thank you. Loads of great ideas. I don’t think dd1 would be able to walk in Skomer, we will look into just doing the cruise around the island instead as she would like to see the puffins.

Thank you, the Iron Age village looks really good, I think dd1 and I will love it 😁

Castell Henllys is great - be aware, you do need to walk up to the round houses
The Shire Horse farm in Eglwyswrw is quite close if you are on that side of the county
Newport Pembs is also a lovely place to pootle around for an hour

Snoopy111 · 16/06/2024 21:43

There's a nice boat trip around Cardigan Bay from Newquay to see the dolphins if they're around.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 16/06/2024 21:51

We have just got back and did an amazing afternoon tea on a ladies small holding followed by feeding her alpacas. Great experience, wonderful food, and something a bit different.

Second broadhaven beach. We had the whole thing to ourselves for a few hours one morning. Magical.

Polyethyl · 16/06/2024 21:54

The shire horse farm has 3 foals this summer and a baby donkey.

puffylovett · 16/06/2024 21:56

Broadhaven south is one of the most beautiful beaches. Barafundle bay also gorgeous.
stackpole is lovely for a day out, too.

I've done the Skomer boat trip with Pembrokeshire Islands boat trips as having chemo at the time and it was magical with puffins all around and rainbows kept appearing. Boat was fine for me and everyone else, was a calm day. The one on land you are there quite a long time so boat may be better for limited mobility. They were really kind as well, we were late and they knew I was having chemo and they held the boat for me.

Penguinsa · 18/06/2024 05:32

It's worth checking were boat goes from we went to wrong place initially, different tours go from different places.

mumonthehill · 18/06/2024 05:38

Wild Lakes - has wakeboarding, inflatable water thing and bouldering. But it is very quirky and small and has a teepee where you can just go and have a meal. It is fab! Aberiddy for the Blue Lagoon- it is stunning and near St Davids.

MinnieMountain · 18/06/2024 05:39

The Old Point House is another good seafood restaurant.
