I have a week in August I need to be away for. Will be just me and maybe the dog.
I want somewhere quiet with empty sweeping sand on the doorstep. Poldark-ish.
I dont know Cornwall at all well. North or south coast?
I know it’s August and school holidays and other peoples children but…….
small cottage/hut would do. would camp but uk weather.
any suggestions?

i would always say North coast, near Rock etc.

But does it need to be Cornwall? there are other much lovelier/quieter/cheaper places.

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 25/05/2024 15:15

Not necessarily Cornwall but I’ve been having a poldark phase.
Devon/Dorset also good

So basically anywhere south. Quiet. Staggering distance to a nice quiet beach.

It’s tricky, because Cornwall can be so difficult to book late. If camping Higher Peneath near Praa Sands can be lovely. Senen Cove might work for you (too remote for me). Gorran Haven has its fans too.

Found this. Aspects Holidays are good, I have used them a few times and found them very helpful. They've probably got other things but I just put some of your criteria in and this came up first on the list OP.

Are you fit and able to walk the coast path a bit? Because only beaches with poor access will be quiet in August so you'll need to park somewhere and walk a few miles in most cases for less frequented coves. Make sure you have good walking sandals/shoes.

hamsterchump · 25/05/2024 15:50

But if it's Poldark you want, it's got to be Cornwall, here are a list of Cornwall locations used in the show. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/nbVFGmB7lFVmJJKpjrCQV/poldarks-cornwall-locations

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 25/05/2024 15:52

Oh lovely suggestions thanks.
fairly fit. Dont mind a good walk but have visions of throwing the door open and just walking out onto a beach. Obvs know this is a bit of a fantasy but I can dream)

I'm following your thread op - I'm hoping to do Cornwall in sept when the kids are back at school.

Aworldofmyown · 25/05/2024 15:58

I would say the south coast is less attractive to families in the summer (it's still crazy busy but marginally better) if you can find somewhere near Polkerris Beach, it is beautiful. However it is a walk from the car park to the beach, depends on your mobility.

Bushwhacked20 · 25/05/2024 16:04

Assuming you can drive Bodmin might suit or the north coast near Tintagel.

You're leaving it pretty late to book for Cornwall though. If it's somewhere quiet you're after what about Pembrokeshire or Somerset or go inland and head for Shrewsbury or Ludlow? And if it's the quiet that's more important than the location what about Northumberland or Dumfriesshire?

Carbis Bay has a huge swathe of white sand and is much quite than St Ives. Although St Ives beaches are absolutely stunning.

Lansallos has a gorgeous sandy beach and is right on the coast path too. There is a campsite there with views of the sea. Also a few cottages to rent in the village itself.

Readymoney Cove in Fowey is a small beach, again right on the Coastal Path.

Par Sands beach is huge and sandy.

Golant is a small hamlet near Fowey and there are cottages close to the beach.

Polperro has a small tidal beach, so definitely not a huge swathe. There are quite a few cottages right next to it though.

transformandriseup · 25/05/2024 16:11

There are static caravans in Hayle which back onto the beach with no fence but I wouldn't have a clue as to how much they would cost. From there you would have an amazing view of St Ives bay.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/05/2024 16:13

You'd get that in Northumberland.

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 25/05/2024 16:15

Northumberland always seems so much further. I’m south. But it’d be a 5 hour drive to the end of Cornwall so maybe……:

@Bushwhacked20 bodmin? Really. No beaches in landlocked Bodmin!

Lots of good ideas on this thread. You want accommodation right on beach though - is that a certainty.

oldwhyno · 25/05/2024 16:17

If quiet is important in August I’d try and look as far onto the Lizard as possible. Maybe look near Rosenithon. Dog friendly beaches round there.

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 25/05/2024 16:21

Oh that one’s lovely. But big for just me but otherwise perfect

TitInATrance · 25/05/2024 16:21

Bear in mind that some beaches are closed to dogs during the summer. I recently went to Putsborough (Devon) and it was empty, but I doubt whether it will be in August. There’s enough beach to spread out in though, few people walk the length of it.

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 25/05/2024 16:22

I did think that about dog. Also bit of a pain if I’m on my own so she may have to stay home too

OP posts:
CornishTiger · 25/05/2024 16:22

Camping with sea view - but if you want camping with view of engine houses better off looking around St Agnes or Geevor.
