Stopover in North Wales

Where is a nice location in North Wales to stopover after arriving in Holyhead? Bangor/Conwy/somewhere else? No
more than an hour from Holyhead ideally. Will just be one night so does not need to be a lot to do, just hotel and restaurant

Thanks!

Llandudno

fr4zzledmum · 14/04/2024 07:37

Conwy, Llanfairfechan, Bewts y Coed.

All stunning (I'm biased as I live here!)

Decorhate · 14/04/2024 07:44

Thanks!

@fr4zzledmum What is Rhyl like? Seem to be quite a few hotels along a nice beach?

@fr4zzledmum What is Rhyl like? Seem to be quite a few hotels along a nice beach?

I live West of Rhyl and only ever visited for the retail park.

Rhyl is generally very seaside touristy (think Blackpool etc.). If that's your thing, it'd be good. Llandudno, although seaside touristy, isn't quite as in your face as Rhyl.

But Conwy and westwards are great spots for rural hotels, mountain views etc.

Decorhate · 14/04/2024 08:05

Rural hotels & mountain views are definitely more my thing!

Cost-wise you may find Bangor is cheaper than the more touristy places further along the coast. I'm off to the Premier Inn there tonight in fact, it's in a quiet spot out of town but does have a restaurant. More expensive but also good is the Management Centre at Bangor Uni.

If you're venturing into North Wales with an EV, let me know as this is my specialist subject!

Decorhate · 14/04/2024 08:14

Thanks @tribpot Is there on-site parking at that Premier Inn? Just remembered dh is bringing a bicycle so need reasonably secure parking

Yes, plenty of parking.

Mwnci123 · 14/04/2024 08:32

Hi OP. Rhyl has the beach and can be fun but is in a very deprived area. Bangor has a lovely pier and it's nice to walk along the coastal path, but not a huge amount for holiday makers to do in the town itself. Conwy is a nice day out I think- castle, little galleries, and lots of cafes and nice little shops. Beaches at Llanfairfechan and Colwyn Bay are easily accessible from the A55/ train if you wanted to call en route. Llanfairfechan is the nicer town, but there's a nice fish restaurant on the sea side in Colwyn Bay and plenty of parking.

Mwnci123 · 14/04/2024 09:04

I've only mentioned places on the coast heading eastward OP. There will be lots of nice places to stay in the mountains.

Spot on advice.

DianaTaverner · 14/04/2024 20:58

Beaumaris is a lovely place to stay, nice and close to Holyhead.

GogLais · 14/04/2024 21:06

Not Rhyl, it's too far. Llandudno if you want seaside, Betws-y-Coed if you want scenic. I'd try to get somewhere nearer Holyhead.

Conwy, Llanfairfechan, Betws y Coed. I should have RTFT. Llanfairfechan was my first thought. A B&B might be suitable.

Allow plenty of time for travel.

jannier · 14/04/2024 21:31

Conwy in the town. Places to eat, walk along the harbour or castle walls

Sheknowsaboutme · 14/04/2024 22:00

Noooo! Not Rhyl. Seriously, its a proper dump.

as others has mentioned, premier inn at Bangor, but Beaumaris is nice.

GogLais · 15/04/2024 11:52

@Sheknowsaboutme , it's too far anyway, you wouldn't get from Rhyl to Holyhead in an hour. I can't criticize it because I haven't been there for about 20 years but I loved it as a kid.

Decorhate · 15/04/2024 17:16

I’m arriving in Holyhead not departing from there so the actual distance is not crucial! Just want somewhere to sleep and eat before we head to our final destination the next morning.

Conwy is a lovely town but has issues with parking in some places. So if you go there check parking.
I would avoid Rhyl.
Bangor isn't great as a town but we'll located.
Menai Bridge is nice and convenient. Or Beaumaris

wateraddict · 15/04/2024 17:20

Beaumaris is great, loads of eateries and nice shops and a beautiful view of the mountains across the strait.

ohtowinthelottery · 15/04/2024 17:20

jannier · 14/04/2024 21:31

Conwy in the town. Places to eat, walk along the harbour or castle walls

@jannier - unlikely to have secure parking though.

CointreauVersial · 15/04/2024 17:22

Llandudno, Beaumaris and Conwy easy to get to from the A55.

Betws-y-Coed lovely and scenic, but a bit of a detour.

Rhyl - nooooo. Horrid place.

orangelotus · 15/04/2024 17:38

Beaumaris was lovely- stayed there in a nice pub called Liverpool Arns last year. Not fancy but clean and reasonable food. Can't remember the parking situation TBH

grannysbay · 15/04/2024 17:50

There is a hotel called the Slate not far from Bangor. Big car park. Near a trainline, but otherwise quiet and has a restaurant. Easy to get back on to the main road into Anglesey.

HippyChickMama · 15/04/2024 17:54

Beddgelert - a couple of hotels to choose from and lots of choice for food and drinks in a beautiful location
Betws y coed as previously mentioned upthread is similar
