M25 disgrace

I live near the a3 m25 junc.
no one knows why they are changing the junction versus mending potholes
now it's shutting this week and four more weekends to come this year.

they don't give dates far in advance so you can plan ( this date was announced about 20th of Feb and April date not set yet).

no doubt this is to allow flex to keep costs down but those costs are just being spread around the local and it's effectively two weeks this year ruined as the roads busy at normal will grid lock.

it's just another example of this bankrupt useless Brexit bunch of stupid racist fools in this goverment

it beggars belief

The whole thing is so poorly handled. Plus every time I do drive past it, there's no one working.

@Oblomov24

its going to be utter disaster for the locals. It’s just budget that means it can’t be done over night.

disgrace and it didn’t need this either.

This weekend it is being shut to replace a bridge, isn't it? Not potholes. But I didn't know it was going to be shut 4 further times!

It needs to be done and closing it over a weekend is the least disruptive time I’d imagine. Still a nightmare but better than in the week.

It's very clear why the junction improvement is being done. It's the busiest junction on the M25 and has a very poor safety record.
I drive through or come off at junction 10 at least 4 times a week and there have been workers somewhere every time. Usually around 50 or more.
They are demolishing a bridge between jct 10 and 11.
I'm travelling through again on Saturday. It is what is it. I will have to allow a lot of extra time, that's all.
I've known for around a month that this weekend will be closed. Seems fine to me.

That junction has been a nightmare for years. I'm pleased it's being done.
1960s concrete and bridge construction is known to deteriorate, so the bridges have to be replaced for safety reasons if nothing else. I don't fancy a crumbling bridge landing on my car

Report
oviraptor21 · 14/03/2024 06:19

It's not budget either - it's the length of time it will take to demolish the bridge and make the area safe. All this is on the information provided about the closure.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 14/03/2024 06:23

I use that junction regularly and just prepare to hunker down over those weekends.

However my OH has a flight to catch on Saturday and he’s had to rethink his timings and mode of transport.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2024 06:29

I have to admit that every time I've driven through there in the past year, and been stuck in the long delays both ways, I'm amazed at the size of the construction site and the amount of land and trees that have been cleared for it. But if the bridge is becoming dangerous then it needs to go!

@shearwater2

they would be better spending it on other road potholes I meant.

they what they have said so well done for quoting the PR.
there are many many many worse junctions so this is not needed.

@oviraptor21

a month is not enough time.
people book things months in advance now.
and they requires planning.
i for example fly back late Friday and leave Monday. Those business flights were booked months ago.

also my older neighbours had no idea (checked on them via wats ap) so that PR didn't work for many.

You don’t need months of warning to work out a different route to the airport.

Did it have a bad safety record? I’m not sure why it’s being done. The cynic in me thinks it’s to help the massive housing proposal at Wisley be approved. They’ve totally destroyed the surrounding area - I’m not sure why so many trees needed to be destroyed especially on the south side.

Have you seen the signs that mention this... something like "just because you don't see us working, doesn't mean we're not doing anything"

Around J10 of the M25 :)

I should steal one and put it on my office desk and bugger off on holiday for a year.

again you feel for the budget PR.

And your civil engineering qualifications are? Can you explain how you demolish an ageing bridge safely in segments, in 8 hour increments, including time to make the remaining bridge segments 100% safe and remove all chances of falling debris?

Look, I live nearby too and combined with other long term local roadworks the last year has been a nightmare traffic wise. We have to somehow get from one side of the M25 to the other for football and back in time for a play performance this Sunday. Friends are trying to figure out if they can make a
birthday party on the other side. I feel your pain.

But the reality is that this was the most dangerous, most congested junction on the M25 and it was getting worse. I know you chalk anything you don't really want to hear up as "PR" but there's actual data on this one.

And I also get that works overrun, schedules change and if they advertised that they were closing on a certain weekend six months in advance, but then weather/materials availability/unexpected problems meant they were overrunning and they weren't going to be ready by that date, they'd be blamed too. I think they're damned if they do, damned if they don't.

with all due respect drivers create chaos on the roads, they cost somewhere in the region of £33bn in crashes to the economy each and every year - thats before they cost around £57-bn in road maintenance and repairs.

Tax on motorists doesn't cover the cost, it simply falls short every year and has done since the freeze on duty in 2012

If motorist want to start moaning about road repairs its about time they cough up and actual cover the cost of the damage they are creating to roads.

Motorways can only be used by drivers, HS2 is going to take frieght off the road and id rather see duty raised to cover this cost

Stop moaning about being able to use a private car at a cost to others 46% of households inside London within the M25 don't even own a car

Confused what Brexit and racism has to do with closing a short section of the M25 for a few days.

Finding an alternate route isn’t rocket science

Jesus OP, it's not personal, it's roadworks, do you really have so little else to worry about?

Well said @JassyRadlett

No pain, no gain.

You just need a Plan B - four weeks is enough for that.

I can't wait until it's over but it's a necessary evil.

Hoping to find a way to support RHS Wisley this weekend. They need it.

Oh dear, so many inaccuracies. All because a motorway is closing, there are many motorways that close, its really not the end of the world.

I hope it improves things. When leaving Wisley in the past, I've always crossed my fingers we'll get out safely. Not been to Wisley for a while but had to pass all this construction a few weeks ago, was amazed at the size of it and how much land grab has happened. I'm keeping these fingers crossed for eventual improvement.
