M25 disgrace

I live near the a3 m25 junc.
no one knows why they are changing the junction versus mending potholes
now it's shutting this week and four more weekends to come this year.

they don't give dates far in advance so you can plan ( this date was announced about 20th of Feb and April date not set yet).

no doubt this is to allow flex to keep costs down but those costs are just being spread around the local and it's effectively two weeks this year ruined as the roads busy at normal will grid lock.

it's just another example of this bankrupt useless Brexit bunch of stupid racist fools in this goverment

it beggars belief

It's not just this weekend. There are 4 other weekend closures planned. It's not the weekend closures that are the problem, it's the whole plan, the whole thing.

We live in a road works area that has been going on for nearly 10 years. (A1 northern England). I wish they would stop with the weekend closures if I'm late for work it's not the end of the world and would be less disruptive than weekend closures as people can work from home in a lot of cases.

@oviraptor21

nope could be done overnight
again you feel for the budget PR.

Are you an engineer?

Can you plan how to take down an entire bridge in 8-10 hours and make the road safe to open at 6 am?

Or how about taking it down a bit at a time, but in a way that the bit still standing couldn't become unstable?...

tedgran · 15/03/2024 21:31

Not sure if this has already been said, but Wisley is closed this weekend.

Just checked RHS website and it said open!

RandomMess · 15/03/2024 22:35

Interestingly it was taking down a bridge they did near here that they then had to do overnights after the closure debacle.

Mindymomo · 16/03/2024 06:30

Just woken up and it’s so quiet, no traffic on diversion building up yet, so good for people having to get out of our village. It didn’t actually close at 9 pm was more like 9.45 pm on Friday night. The message has certainly got out.

oviraptor21 · 16/03/2024 07:30

Yep. If I set off now, my route, usually via the closed section, is exactly the same time as usual. Maybe I should use the diverted route every week 🤔

Oblomov24 · 16/03/2024 08:44

Ds2 has a football game in farnborough tomorrow and on our football WhatsApp chat we have all discussed how to travel there. Dh suggested that instead of going the normal M25 then M3, because of the M25 J10 closure this weekend, aswell as the fact that they have advised no one to travel unless 'necessary', (even I don't think a football match constitutes 'necessary') We are now going to try an A30 route.

WorkingFromHomeShite · 16/03/2024 09:05

@Mindymomo @oviraptor21 I’m happy to hear it’s quiet! It looks like it’s all flowing nicely with green roads on Google maps but I’m never sure exactly how accurate the traffic flow is on there.

SerendipityJane · 16/03/2024 09:11

As a now resident of the West Midlands, where various motorways have been building sites since 2013, I can assure you all that all this work will make stuff all difference to your journey times when it's finished. Well, it might increase them.

The problem with improving roads is it draws in traffic, until the roads jam again. Which is why it was an absolute waste of time making the M25 4 lanes. All it did was increase traffic by 30%. (Do the math).

Paul2023 · 16/03/2024 23:03

All I know work wise is that they taking down a bridge and replacing it with a new gantry.

Other than closing the motorway, I don’t know how else they can do it . Obviously there’s never a good time to completely close a section of the M25, other than a weekend in mid March.

To be fair it’s probably the quieter time of year to do it , before Easter in two weeks.

Totally agree it’s a logistical nightmare for anyone affected, but I presume it’s necessary.

NeonSoda · 18/03/2024 05:47

Interesting that people are raging about the poor trees that are being cut down.

Apparently they were pine planted after the end WW2 as part of a renewable forestry scheme. So they are now being cut down because it’s time to do that, and the pine is being sent to local sawmills to make furniture and sheds and the like.

They’re being replaced by even more pine trees so that in another seventy years they can also be cut down to make new furniture.

Sounds like great forestry management to me.

Magic what you can find out when you have the entire worlds worth of knowledge on a digital device in your pocket.

That isn't what the environmental report says. What is your source please?

@SpringOfContentment

not normal atall for m25 as it’s never happened before since it opened

they should shut the whole thing and do works everywhere at the same time

how does everyone feel about that.?

they could clear up all the crap and if all shut it won’t jam up one area with through traffic

the m25 will be on single lane roads covered with pot holes so the preparation has been shambolic

like all government departments under this morally bankrupt government

Edited

They are dealing with eight bridges. This needed a 750 tonne crane to lift into place. Somehow I doubt that we've got eight 750 tonne cranes sitting around ready to be used all at once before putting them into mothballs again.

donothing · 18/03/2024 08:25

M25 reopens eight hours ahead of schedule www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-68593967

Well I think they've done an excellent job of doing what they needed to do, quickly and efficiently. People followed the guidance. Crumbling bridges have to be replaced

Great! Tell us how.

BarleyShuga · 18/03/2024 09:05

So how was everyone's experience this weekend?

AnonyLonnymouse · 18/03/2024 09:13

They seem to have done a brilliant job. Some good pictures and videos of the work happening available online.

I used a nearby stretch of the M25 on Saturday night (just a couple of junctions) and it was amazingly quiet!

Lindy2 · 18/03/2024 09:15

Everyone seems to have done a good job of taking the advice to only travel if absolutely necessary. Everything kept flowing.

As long as people stay away for the other closures then it should be OK.

CointreauVersial · 18/03/2024 13:50

We went southbound through the diversion yesterday, expecting to be queueing for hours, and it was a complete anti-climax....traffic was really light. Although it added 20 minutes or so to our journey it was pretty painless.

LIZS · 15/04/2024 19:09

Today Highways have notified of another closure on 10th-13th May

Oblomov24 · 16/04/2024 21:26

Saw that Liz. Great! Is this 2 of 5, closures?

LIZS · 16/04/2024 21:32

Think so
