Somewhere with amazing scenery?

me and dh went to Scotland last year and really loved it. We walked every day and enjoyed the scenery and peace. We were very rural and saw barely anyone. Perfect! It really did us good. But it was a long drive! The dog wasn’t impressed!
can anyone please recommend anywhere ‘like Scotland’ but not so far? I want some wow scenery to walk, not many shops really or too touristy or towny. I just love views. Peaks? Lakes? Yorkshire? I don’t mind a beach, not bothered either way, but I like hills and views mostly! Interested in your recommendations please…
plan B would be Scotland again.
thank you

Northumberland or pembrokeshire

tigerbear · 11/01/2024 22:04

Not quite so far, but Northumberland ticks all your boxes. Would knock an hour or two off your journey.

KMM87 · 11/01/2024 22:04

Where are you based?

Mumaway · 11/01/2024 22:04

I love all of peaks, lakes and Yorkshire. I'm not sure you could go wrong in any of them

Chipotellyandlime · 11/01/2024 22:05

Lake District

HippyChickMama · 11/01/2024 22:05

Snowdonia, Beddgelert is lovely though quite touristy

ElizabethVonArnim · 11/01/2024 22:06

Lakes, for sure. Loads of rain there, though (to fill the lakes, I guess). Beautiful.

solsticelove · 11/01/2024 22:07

Another vote for the Lake District.
Beauuuuutiful

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 11/01/2024 22:10

Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons

Custardpudding · 11/01/2024 22:10

based In the midlands so looking anywhere really but somewhere not so long in the car as Scotland would be the target, but as beautiful as Scotland.

Lakes you'll get people. Look into the dales in the Pennines, Teasdale, Wensleydale, Weardale areas. North Yorks/ County Durham areas. Stunning and not well known, we were surprised how beautiful it was. Northumberland is also rural and large enough to be remote.

Lake District

thatneverhappened · 11/01/2024 22:14

Doesn't "not so far" depend on whether you're in Yorkshire or Cornwall?

Falkenburg · 11/01/2024 22:20

I live here, it's fabulous -

Falkenburg · 11/01/2024 22:21

He calls it The Gower but that's incorrect as it's just Gower or Gower Peninsula.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 11/01/2024 22:25

I adore the peak district, and it is very convenient.

You can see a nice range of scenery too, the pretty white peak with the Derbyshire Dales, like dovedale, lathkill dale, chrome hill and Parkhouse (dragon's back). There's the Derwent valley, cradle of the industrial revolution and home of the dambusters. Then the dark peak has the gritstone edges, Mam Tor which is also known as the shivering mountain complete with its broken road. The highest peaks, Kinder and Bleaklow have peat bogs that are some of the rarest habitats in the world, and Kinder has it's downfall, a waterfall that flows upward. Then there are the caverns and blue John mines in Castleton.

If you get bored of walking we have some magnificent buildings too, Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, Kedleston Hall and Cake Abbey, plus the mills.

allaboardtheskytrain · 11/01/2024 22:38

Lake District is beautiful and the first place that comes to mind but we also love Cornwall and Pembrokeshire for the rugged coastline.

idontlikealdi · 11/01/2024 22:44

Peak District? We went to Matlock Bath and toured, loved it.

New2024 · 11/01/2024 22:56

Lake District or Wales. Consider Cornwall but maybe avoid height of summer as too expensive. The DH and I are Lake District and Scotland devotees but we really liked the rugged Cornwall coastline and did some surfing activities that made it quite fun.

HappyHappyy · 11/01/2024 22:57

Peak District, Thors Cave, Chee Dale (great if your dog likes a swim), Mam Tor & Castleton, Ladybower, Chatsworth, Kinder and my favourite, Longshaw down to Padley Gorge up to Surprise View. Thornbridge Brewery if you like a pint & good pizza. Google 'Ethels', that'll give you some indication of some of best views around here x

Dartmoor, about 3 hrs from Birmingham

Stunning in every way. Have been there today and the mix of sunshine and icicles was glorious.

Trough of Bowland is fantastic but not many shops, fine for a weekend but possibly too small for a week.
North Wales has it all
Some ideas here

And for a totally different activity, stunning location too, or just pop in for Coffee and see the others riding

North Wales.
Alpine, soaring mountains, pretty villages, the sea. Loads to do.

minipie · 17/01/2024 20:29

Following. I love a hill with a view. Currently the DC moan when dragged up a hill but hoping this may change soon, or they’ll be old enough to leave at home…

SittingOnTheChair · 17/01/2024 20:55

Go back to Scotland. You won't regret it.
