Edinburgh restaurants

My partner and I are going to Edinburgh for a big birthday this year, and would like to book a nice restaurant-any suggestions of where to go?

We'd like somewhere interesting/atmospheric but with good, hearty food (ideally locally sourced). Budget of up to £100pp.

Hardly the fault of the restaurant though.

Kind of is, though. They don’t have to have mixed sex loos and it sounds like this decision led to the unpleasant experience. It’s made me cross it off my list.

I’d recommend Fishers in the City, has the best seafood I’ve had in Edinburgh and good atmosphere/service. If you want Michelin, I’d favour The Kitchin over Martin Wishart, as MW certainly wouldn’t meet the hearty portion sizes criteria in my opinion. Another vote for the Street food and Chez Jules for lunch if you’re looking for good food over quiet atmosphere.

You can meet arseholes anywhere. Mixed sex loos don't create arseholes.

Glad you have chosen.

I would avoid six by Nico, not worth the cost and very much overhyped.

Go for tea on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Re Kyloe and mixed sex loos generally - it's a risk thing. Yes of bourse there are unpleasant women too. But - I have never been sexually harassed by a female in a single sex loo or changing room - or anywhere else for that matter. And my friend will never be happy to let her 7 year old go on her own to a mixed sex loo ...

No but they might attract them

I can’t fault Rhubarb as a choice, such a lovely setting and great food. They also do a brilliant, reasonably priced afternoon tea. I would also recommend Heron, the newest Michelin starred Leith restaurant. We went before they got the star and the food and service were excellent. Less formal than Kitchin and Martin Wishart. Also in Leith but much less fancy The Roseleaf does superior pub food including a fabulous Sunday roast and great breakfasts.

Tbh I wouldn't have let my 7 year old go to a female only loo on her own either.

Enjoy Rhubarb. Was there when last in Edinburgh early December and food, ambience and service all great. Female loo up to standard tooGrin

I know you’ve mentioned hearty and local, but if you want a few brilliant but non-local food suggestions…

Chop Chop is delicious for dumplings. Their unlimited banquet is fab.
Stack, in Leith, specialises in dim sum. It’s a bit of a basic/hole in the wall restaurant, but authentic and so good.
Xiangbala Hotpot, Dalry. Truly authentic and great experience cooking mountains of food. Yes Sushi just off Princes St also decent for this, albeit not as authentic.
Korean Bbq also incredibly tasty.
If you like seafood, massively recommend The White Horse on the Royal Mile. Not the cheapest, but food is top notch. If you make it out to Musselburgh, highly recommend East Coast.

So hungry now. And sadly skint.
