Edinburgh restaurants

My partner and I are going to Edinburgh for a big birthday this year, and would like to book a nice restaurant-any suggestions of where to go?

We'd like somewhere interesting/atmospheric but with good, hearty food (ideally locally sourced). Budget of up to £100pp.

Didn't rate Palmerston at all nor Howies.
Purslane is good as is Fhior. Second the lookout which us up a hill but I would say that would be better for a lunch, early evening to make most of views.
Whiskers in Stockbridge is a great local place and if you take an evening in Stockbridge I would recommend the great cocktail bar the last word in St Stephen St.
Aizle, Timberyard, Leftfield, Fin and Grape are all great too.
For a slightly cheaper meal while you visit would also recommend Chez Jules

Ooh whiskers in Stockbridge does a lovely Sunday lunch if you’re here at a weekend

I was really disappointed with Howies recently. I thought it was very bland, and overpriced for what it was.

Place watching for our next trip!

I agree

Aizle, Fhior, Timberyard, Heron, The Kitchin are all amazing.

Tattu is lovely.

Fascinating thread - and useful for many people

The Witchery is pricey - but if you fancy a bit of gothic!
I was not impressed with Kitchen - too full of themselves and not welcoming

Martin Wishart gets my vote

Enjoy - and let us know what you decide

Tattu is lovely.

I went once and didn’t like it at all but depends what you’re looking for.

Wanted to echo Chez Jules which is lovely and also Ka Pao in the St James Quarter. You wouldn't think you'd get a good restaurant at the top of a shopping centre but it is fantastic. Hard to describe but fusion Asian I suppose. The corn ribs and caramel chicken wings are to die for!

The Lookout is run by the same folk as Gardeners Cottage and is amazing in terms of the views - it's on top of Carlton Hill.

A limited menu, so definitely worth looking at online first to check it's your cup of tea, but in my view a great place for a special occasion.

Oh sorry - skinned through this too quickly and missed the fact you've already got this on your list!

I’d rate the spence, rhubarb, scran & scallie, monteiths, the Grainstore or Wedgewood for what you’ve described.

for me tattu, 6 by Nico, witchery secret garden were all style over substance (thought the rooms as witchery are amazing and it’s same group as rhubarb which is fab)

Someone above mentioned Kyloe. I avoid it after an unpleasant experience in their mixed sex loos.

EvelynBeatrice · 06/01/2024 09:27

You could add ‘Dine’ to your lunch list if so inclined. A friend took me to the Murrayfield one when I was last there and was very good. She said there are two others in Edinburgh also run by chef Stuart Muir.

Hardly the fault of the restaurant though.

So far I think Rhubarb fits the bill for us, both in terms of the menu and the setting. And I'm definitely thinking The Witchery for the lunch set menu alongside La Locanda as we love Italian food. So many great suggestions!

That's disappointing, and thank you for the heads up!

Mowgli is lovely, little more casual and the atmosphere has been really nice in there whenever I've been

Just be aware that Rhubarb is not city centre in case you're planning to walk from anywhere else. It depends where you're staying but it would be a taxi job if you're staying centrally.

RaquelGreen · 06/01/2024 16:01

@platinumplus yes we'll get a taxi for Rhubarb as we want to stay centrally.

On another note, if any of you have suggestions for great pubs/cocktail bars then please let me know Smile

Bit late to the restaurant recommendations but I had a really lovely meal at Forage and Chatter and would definitely recommend it.

RobinStrike · 06/01/2024 20:43

Have had a few wonderful meals in Wildfire, steak and seafood specialists. It's all locally sourced and also has local wines and whiskies. .

HannibalHeyes · 07/01/2024 00:41

The Witchery does pre- and post- theatre menus which are cheaper. I suspect pre- for your family, would be worth looking at.

Off point I know but the name 'Forage and Chatter' has always really put me off!
