Im sure i read this somewhere.
It says you can book a seat in any class with an ordinary ticket. Im thinking the Edinburgh to London train, so a long journey.

Does anyone know?

What made you think you could @ssd ?

I'm in the U.S. and travel in business class on Amtrak, the national passenger railroad, a few times a year. On most trains, business class is reserved seats and coach class isn't. Business class is much nicer, with larger seats, electrical outlets, free coffee or tea, etc. As you enter the business class car, there are very prominent signs that the seats are reserved and require a business class ticket.

Every. Single. Time. People wander in, see how posh it is and plunk themselves down in any empty seat. I've given up warning them that the conductor is going to make them move when he or she comes through. Usually, they grumble a bit and move. On my last trip, two yobs sat themselves down, gloating about how they had scored posh seats with standard tickets, and refused to move when the conductor told them to. He told them that if they didn't move, he'd radio ahead to the next station and have the railway police waiting to take them off and arrest them for theft of services. They moved.

So OP, you're asking for trouble if you take a first class seat with a standard class ticket.

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/07/2023 11:50

Please come back OP and tell us why you think this would be possible?!

littlemousebigcheese · 21/07/2023 11:52

I was once moved to first class because I was 8 months pregnant and no one would give me a seat even though I was about to pass out. The train ticket inspector got annoyed on my behalf and took me to first class!

Seainasive · 21/07/2023 11:53

You can often get cheap upgrades using the Seatfrog app.

SoupDragon · 21/07/2023 11:56

Why on earth would this be possible? I mean, I can imagine that it's possible to book a seat anywhere but you'd then have to pay the fare upgrade or move when the guard/ticket inspector/whatever they call them came round. They removed several standard class ticket holders from the first class carriage when I travelled to Southampton last year.

Year6Leavers · 21/07/2023 12:33

Eh? No of course you can't 😅

empatheticpretzel · 21/07/2023 12:33

No and if you go and sit in first class when the ticket inspector comes around you'll be fined and possibly kicked off

empatheticpretzel · 21/07/2023 12:36

If you want to sit in first class pay for it

OhComeOnFFS · 21/07/2023 12:38

I feel like starting a thread: is it true you can win the lottery without buying a ticket?

Sugarflowers · 21/07/2023 12:45

Op maybe you just did a poorly worded post. You have two options with a standard ticket to sit in first class.

On some trains you can upgrade on the train , the details are here https://www.lner.co.uk/support/faq/tickets-booking/upgrade-to-first-class/upgrade-to-first-class-onboard-the-train/

If you have booked via LNER you can bid for an upgrade before you travel on any train with Seatfrog https://www.lner.co.uk/tickets-savings/your-ticket/first-class-upgrade/

Upgrade to First Class onboard the train

https://www.lner.co.uk/support/faq/tickets-booking/upgrade-to-first-class/upgrade-to-first-class-onboard-the-train

EdwardianTable · 21/07/2023 12:46

I'm fascinated to know why anyone would think this is true?

Also, it's really worth it to pay for first class on the Edinburgh-London train, it's much more comfortable if you can.

VictoriaVenkman · 21/07/2023 12:48

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/07/2023 11:46

If she pays the upgrade when they come round checking the tickets, she won't be.

Well obviously if she pays an upgrade she can stay there Confused

Namechangeforanamechange · 21/07/2023 12:54

On GWR, you can upgrade on the train to first class at weekends for a small supplement (much less than a first class ticket). It's because the weekend trains don't have the full first class service eg food service to your seat. Are you thinking of something like that?

You can also use the GWR first class dining car (on the very few trains that have them) with a standard ticket. In theory, you are supposed to return to standard class after the breakfast/lunch/dinner service has finished but no one ever does.

Yes and if you go in the dining car you can order a sandwich but then request a steak for the same price. Same for drinks pay for lemonade but insist on champagne.

😂😂😂

I'm glad I clicked on this thread. I have never heard of Seatfrog. Barring train strikes I am travelling down to London soon and will give it a try.

I don't know about LNER, but very occasionally on my line if the train is exceptionally crowded, they might announce that the first class section is available to all passengers

Yes, that happened to us once on East Midland trains. Also, DD has a hidden disability and was travelling down to London from Sheffield. The previous train had been cancelled so the train was exceptionally crowded and someone else was in her and her friend's seat. She asked the ticket inspector if there was some priority seating (in second class), and he sent her and her friend to first class for the rest of the journey (East Midlands Trains again).

dancinfeet · 21/07/2023 13:36

No you can’t. You can’t even stand in first class with a standard ticket. I have been on a train from king’s cross to doncaster that had the two trains before it cancelled, all reserved seats on that train were cancelled so someone sat in our reserved seats and the train was ram packed for those standing. Myself and a friend were squashed up against the wall, but there was loads of space in 1st just through the doors near the luggage rack, so we stood just on the other side of the doors in 1st. Staff member told us to get out of the carriage despite there being loads of space. We had to push our way back into the other carriage as the train was so full there was no space for anyone to move up.

AgnesX · 21/07/2023 13:42

No, unless told by the train manager during the journey.

Anyport · 21/07/2023 13:47

This is a wind up isn't it?🤔🙄😂

jaundicedoutlook · 21/07/2023 14:03

You can on South Eastern. Buy a standard ticket and help yourself to the first class section from Tunbridge Wells to Cannon Street. All their trains have been declassified, but the first class sections are still there on the trains, with their marginally nicer seats.

Was just about to say this. I’ve seen someone be fined for standing in 1st class when the train was absolutely heaving with no room to stand elsewhere. I’m all for people paying what’s due but that was a bit of a jobsworth guard. In any event after he issued the ticket he returned to the guard’s car because he couldn’t get down the train himself… I did tweet Thameslink in support of the guy who got fined, no idea if he ever got it written off though.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/07/2023 14:09

We don’t have trains anymore in the north of England. Trans Penine express actually said ‘avoid using trains if at all possible’

A train would be a luxury item never mind a first class ticket.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 21/07/2023 14:17

I have when the trains been full of drunk idiots that the guards refuse to sort out.....I have a ds with a disability who.gets extremely distressed by behaviour like that. I always film what's been going on and explain why if I'm asked. I've never been challenged on it.. ...I wouldn't recommend doing it just because you want to though. You're likely to get charged the day rate which will be extortionate.

RampantIvy · 21/07/2023 14:17

TPE are a bad joke aren't they @ArseInTheCoOpWindow. I once ended up driving DD around West Yorkshire to get her on a train back to the North East. She just uses Cross Country these days.
