Hotel Safety

This is my story but I know tis has happened to other people too. In May I was staying in a Hotel and at 1 am the hotel receptionist let himself into my room. He grabbed my leg and luckily, I woke up and screamed the place down and he ran from the room. The called the police on 999 but they refused to send anyone instead they phoned the hotel and giving the impression it was OK as he had not broken in he had used his key card. I then realised if I went back to sleep, he could come back as there was no deadlock on the door that the hotel staff could not override. I then went down to reception to find a manager or something. When I got to reception, he was the only person on. So I said to him It was you, you were in my room why were you in my room and he replied because you are a 'Pathetic Bitch' I then put my phone on immediately video as I was terrified. The rest of the conversation is here:

I then got my company to find me another hotel and moved out of the Travelodge approx 2am. He then tried to lock me out of the hotel while I was packing the car. Video to show that is at the link below.

The police have since confirmed he was known to them. The hotel have since confirmed they do not DBS check their staff as it is not industry standard and is not required. If they had enhanced dbs checked their staff, he would possibly not have been given the job and access to my room. The whole incident was terrifying. I have started a petition to make all hotels Enhance DBS check their staff. Please consider signing and sharing this email as I need 10,000 signatures for Parliament to comment and 100,000 for it to be debated in Parliament. I want to make hotels safe for women and children and anyone as all people are venerable when they are asleep.

This is absolutely terrifying and thank you OP for bringing it to light. I travel alone for work often and have stayed in Travelodge several times, I had no idea this sort of thing went on. I'm completely shocked.

Signed - hate Travelodge, had the most unsafe night of my life in one in SW of England with my 7 year old child. Honestly slept up against the door as the receptionist let all his mates in through the fire escape next to my room and they partied all night in the room next to me, drinking, drugs banging on my door. Couldn't leave the room to complain as he was the night manager/receptionist. After that night I Complained several times to a Travelodge Head Office who kept saying they were dealing with my complaint and I gave up chasing after 6 months. Complained in the morning to the day manager who couldn't have cared less. Every time I drive past a Travelodge i think how much they do not care about safety. Signed your petition and I'm so sorry you had this happen to you - just horrible for you.

Oh well that's alright then @Titfortat78

No need to bother DBS checking staff before giving them a master key Hmm

Hmm
Kastri · 21/07/2023 21:31

Signed.

DBS checking would only scratch the surface as it would only flag those who have been caught.
Any DBS check for any job is by definition not going to flag up people who haven't been caught. But if we applied the logic that DBS checking is a waste of time because it's not perfect, we wouldn't have DBS checks for any jobs.

You can bet that if hotels were required to DBS check anyone with access to a master key, the hotel businesses would be a lot more careful about how many members of staff get access to master keys. It would also be possible to finesse the policy a bit, eg require DBS checks for those who have access to rooms during night time hours and require (say) cleaners' master keys to be deactivated outside their work hours.

@Travels I’m so sorry this happened to you OP. I had very similar happen to me when I lived in University accommodation. Keycard access to the flat and to my bedroom and yet a drunk man managed to get his way through both and come into my bedroom. He done a runner when I screamed thankfully. Security at Halls and the police both laughed at me and just bantered with each other about how good a night the guy must be having. They thought it was hilarious. I still can’t sleep in a house alone and that was 14 years ago.

MrsMallett · 21/07/2023 23:06

Sorry this happened to you OP.
Signed, and I’ve asked others to sign too.

Ohyousillydivvy · 22/07/2023 08:26

I've signed but I'd ask mnhq to move this to AIBU and change title to 'Sign DBS check compulsory requirement petition for hotel staff' to gain more followers.

I always lock the door from the inside and use the chain as well- would this not stop them coming in?

GiddyGladys · 22/07/2023 09:00

That's so shocking

PegasusReturns · 22/07/2023 09:06

I’ve signed, but you should follow up with police also. Their behaviour here has been abysmal

sorry this happened to you

Akire · 22/07/2023 09:10

Signed. I know you can’t DBS everyone but surely those on night duty alone will be. Had one bad experience in travellodge in an awful room so refuse to use again on that count!

Their job description doesn’t include being responsible for children or vulnerable people so legally I can’t see how you could.

I've never been in a hotel room with a chain on the door, ever.

The thumb turn locks on the inside don't usually override the key card I don't think. Certainly I've used one and then DP has been able to open the door with his card anyway, I was expecting him to have to knock but it just opened.

Igmum · 22/07/2023 14:00

Signed and have bought a door lock
