Hotel Safety

This is my story but I know tis has happened to other people too. In May I was staying in a Hotel and at 1 am the hotel receptionist let himself into my room. He grabbed my leg and luckily, I woke up and screamed the place down and he ran from the room. The called the police on 999 but they refused to send anyone instead they phoned the hotel and giving the impression it was OK as he had not broken in he had used his key card. I then realised if I went back to sleep, he could come back as there was no deadlock on the door that the hotel staff could not override. I then went down to reception to find a manager or something. When I got to reception, he was the only person on. So I said to him It was you, you were in my room why were you in my room and he replied because you are a 'Pathetic Bitch' I then put my phone on immediately video as I was terrified. The rest of the conversation is here:

I then got my company to find me another hotel and moved out of the Travelodge approx 2am. He then tried to lock me out of the hotel while I was packing the car. Video to show that is at the link below.

The police have since confirmed he was known to them. The hotel have since confirmed they do not DBS check their staff as it is not industry standard and is not required. If they had enhanced dbs checked their staff, he would possibly not have been given the job and access to my room. The whole incident was terrifying. I have started a petition to make all hotels Enhance DBS check their staff. Please consider signing and sharing this email as I need 10,000 signatures for Parliament to comment and 100,000 for it to be debated in Parliament. I want to make hotels safe for women and children and anyone as all people are venerable when they are asleep.

A friend of mine works at our local Travelodge. I often worry about her when she's working alone on reception from 10pm until 6am. I can honestly say the staff are more at risk from the guests than the guests from the staff. They do have a panic button didn't stop the bloke who asked for food to be brought to his room from flashing her when he came to the door. Or the aggressive drunks that she had to call police for them to chuck in the cells. If a room has been missed she has to go and clean it.

Year6Leavers · 21/07/2023 07:08

Oh well that's alright then @Titfortat78

No need to bother DBS checking staff before giving them a master key Hmm

FrivolousTreeDuck · 21/07/2023 07:24

Shocking that the police did not take the 999 call seriously.

AmITooOldToDoThis · 21/07/2023 07:31

This would need a change of law. You can’t just enhance DBS anybody.

LulooLemon · 21/07/2023 07:38

Shocking

NotARockstar · 21/07/2023 07:40

Ugh. Your story and that video made me shudder. His arrogance 🤢

What response have the police and Travelodge given you?

LetItGoHome · 21/07/2023 08:01

Have the police pressed any charges? The fact he grabbed your leg shows it wasn't a mistake.

LulooLemon · 21/07/2023 12:58

Signed. And bumping this thread.

Signed, I'm so sorry you went through such an awful experience. I used to stay in hotels all the time for work this gives me the shivers

booktokbear · 21/07/2023 13:40

The manager broke into our apartment in the Dominican Republic, we'd just been talking to him and did we were off to the beach, I turned back as I needed the loo, 5 mins later the door opened, thank god I'd put the bolt on, he absolutely was going to rob us.

We were moved hotels to the next door complex but it was so unsettling. I can only imagine why might have happened if he'd actually got in while I was in the bathroom.

Signed.

ChaToilLeam · 21/07/2023 13:43

That’s terrifying. I‘ll sign!

SirVixofVixHall · 21/07/2023 14:31

A relative stays in hotels fairly often for work and often uses one of the door jammers above.

Wiseowltaylor · 21/07/2023 15:55

That's appalling - signed

TravelGal · 21/07/2023 18:46

This is absolutely horrific. His utter disregard for you as a fellow human being is sickening. I work in the travel security space and have been pushing for hotels to have deadbolts for a very long time due to the safety risk for lone women travellers. Are you able to share which Travelodge it was by chance.

Id love to have a chat with you if you are willing to see what else we can do to support others.

In the meantime, I have spoken with one of our hotel advisors who informs me that they DBS check night staff and lone workers as standard, so it is possible.

YallaYallaaa · 21/07/2023 18:53

Ive had something similar, and always use a lock similar to PPs. It’s horrible.

Tiredmumno1 · 21/07/2023 19:12

So sorry you had to go through that, what a scumbag.

Also signed, fingers crossed more people see this and sign it.

Barold · 21/07/2023 19:17

Bloody hell, OP. How awful!

Signed. His body language screams guilty. Kudos for keeping your cool and recording it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 21/07/2023 19:37

I've signed OP, that must have been terrifying. I'm glad it sounds like the police have done something, if they've said he's known to them?

PressedintoAction · 21/07/2023 19:55

Bloody hell, that’s terrifying. I’m in awe of how cool, calm and collected you were.

I’ve signed the petition.

I see from a review of this hotel on TripAdvisor that another customer had their keycard cloned and given to a random stranger so security is obviously very lax here. Please do leave a review of your experience on TripAdvisor, Booking.com, Google etc so that other lone travellers are aware. I naively would have assumed I was safe inside a locked hotel room.
