We're planning to do a bit of a roadtrip around Wales this summer and was wondering if there are any wonderful places to visit I might not have thought of. We'll spend some time in Tenby and Gower, but will have a baby and 7 year old in tow so not sure about doing any serious hiking. Portmeirion is on my list, would love to try and visit some Welsh wineries :)
What are you must sees and dos!

We liked Llandudno, take a ride up the mountain on the cable cars for some stunning views. Conwy is nice too.

St David's is a wonderful place and well worth going to the end of the earth for.

At least one castle - you could visit Caernarfon or Harlech while you're in the North for Portmeirion.

The National Museums are all (that I've been to, anyway) very good, and free entrance. I particularly recommend The Big Pit and the Slate Museum. I think they'd both appeal to most 7 year olds as well.

If it's your sort of thing, Folly Farm near Tenby is, despite its name, a proper zoo, and also has a lovely collection of historic fairground rides you can go on.

There's a lot of steam trains dotted around Wales, mostly in the West, though Llangollen has one, and that's a place with visiting on its own account anyway, so you could go on one of those.

Although you say you're not sure about serious hiking, the coast path is lovely, particularly in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, and you could easily do quite a short section of it.

Caldey island, whilst you're in Tenby

Take cash!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 16/07/2023 07:51

If you go to Harlech Castle you must have ice creams from Hufenfa'r Castell opposite. They make their own ice creams, sorbets, fudge and chocolates and they're amazing!

Definitely take cash. The shops are just so appreciative if you pay in cash.

Hay on Wye for bookshops, river canoeing, mountains, market day

Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre where you can see red kites feeding

Oneofeachclub · 16/07/2023 08:17

Ynyslas National Nature Reserve and the petrified forest

Temporaryanonymity · 16/07/2023 08:18

Your 7 year old might enjoy the water park at the LC2 in Swansea. You could do the Wales Waterfront Museum the same day as they are pretty much next door to each other.

We really enjoyed Bodnant Gardens, Penrhyn Castle and Portmerion.

HippyChickMama · 16/07/2023 17:41

Beddgelert in the north for a visit to Gelert's grave, a walk by the river and a pizza followed by homemade ice cream at Glaslyn and maybe a pint in The Prince Llewelyn. If you're looking for a fancier meal out, Y Sgwar in Tremadog is lovely. Not wine, but the local Purple Moose brewery has a pub called The Australia in Porthmadog and there's a gin and whisky distillery near Aber Falls
