What pants do you wear?

i am coming to the UK from Australia in December. We live in sunny Queensland, currently it is winter where the days drop to 15 deg and we are all shivering. We recently went to Melbourne which is much colder and froze. Jumpers and jackets were ok we layered up but I feel like all the pants we have are just not warm, even with thermals under them. What pants do you wear in winter? Something lined? I want something easy to wash, as we are backpacking.

I think you’ll need layers. Merino wool thermals are the warmest and thinnest I’ve had. Expensive but possibly cheaper from NZ or Australia if you can find them as lots of marketing over here suggests it comes from
Sheep down under(although our wool is perfectly fine). Mountain warehouse are good for the price in UK

Have a look at softshell trousers. They're warm, comfy and not too bulky. I wore them daily when I lived in the Alps and was outdoors a lot. They're probably the best all rounder without looking too outdoorsy.

Thanks I’ll check those out!

Also try Decathlon - they tend to be cheaper than branded companies. They have good ski clothing which would be suitable, things like thin fleece base layers, leggings and socks

If you want clothes that wash and dry easily then fleece is your best bet and cheaper than merino.

I've never had thermal walking boots but waterproof ones with good thermal/fleece socks will work, or get some waterproof socks.
I would definitely get good gloves - I use ski glove liners plus ski gloves or mittens over the top, or just fleece gloves.
For windproof trousers I would wear tracksuit bottoms or thick fleecy leggings with lightweight waterproof over trousers.

We are going to Cornwall and then into Germany and Austria. Is there any kind of waterproof ish trousers that you can get? I was thinking jeans aren’t that warm. We have waterproof goose down jackets to bring.

everything here is lightweight and not particularly warm. I was thinking I may have to order from over there or else just buy some once we arrive. We are taking just 3 trousers each. Well technically 2 as travelling in 1.

I live in Cornwall

You will be ok in jeans but yes to waterproof trousers if you're planning on doing a lot of walking outdoors or mountain warehouse do fleece lined trousers. I'm sure there must be an Aussie version of mountain warehouse.

You won't need a goose down waterproof you'll be boiling. It can be quite mild in December but also frosty -1C is a reasonable low and 6-7 degrees maybe 9 as a high. But it will rain so bring a decent waterproof. It might be best to wear lots of layers which can be easily taken on and off

Sorry I don't know about the other places you're going. Assuming Austria will be much colder

Have a lovely trip

If you want any suggestions on where to go in Cornwall let me know

Yea that’s what worrying me. I’ve bought me and dd waterproof hiking boots. They aren’t thermal ones though 😬. Can’t get thermal ones in Australia

Yes you can! Shame you didn't pick some up in the Aldi ski sale. I have a pair of Columbia Minx boots bought from Amazon but you can buy direct from Columbia and I think Anaconda sell them too. The internet is your friend!

I think thermal hiking boots would be a bit overkill for the UK (unless doing serious hiking) but could be good for Austria depending on where you are going. You might get away with warm hiking socks instead.

I like Uniqlo heattech leggings and tops if you need an extra layer under jeans or leggings. I don't usually find 2 layers necessary in the UK (although will depend what you're used to) but did find them useful in Germany and Austria in winter.

thanks! We don’t really have any firm plans for Cornwall yet. My husbands ancestors came from Cornwall and so he just wants to go back there and see it. We will prob try to find the village they came from. My gran is doing some family history research for us. I believe that descendants still live in the area and have businesses and stuff. But apart from that we really just want to travel round. We have a very Cornish surname. My oldest son also has a Cornish first name so we will fit right in 😂
