What pants do you wear?

i am coming to the UK from Australia in December. We live in sunny Queensland, currently it is winter where the days drop to 15 deg and we are all shivering. We recently went to Melbourne which is much colder and froze. Jumpers and jackets were ok we layered up but I feel like all the pants we have are just not warm, even with thermals under them. What pants do you wear in winter? Something lined? I want something easy to wash, as we are backpacking.

Whereabouts in the UK are you visiting.

Spaghettio · 03/07/2023 14:50

Hi, you might want to clarify you're talking about trousers.... I'm an Aussie in the UK so understand, but over here pants mean undies!

Spaghettio · 03/07/2023 14:51

Ps - unless you're spending heaps of time outside and not moving about, jeans or trackies would be fine.

DustyLee123 · 03/07/2023 14:51

Trousers ? I wear thick leggings or jeans.

KirstenBlest · 03/07/2023 14:51

Grin unless aussies wear their grundies over their tights

5childrenand · 03/07/2023 14:52

Just jeans, leggings (you can get lined ones which are snuggly when it’s really cold), thick tights with a skirt. That type of thing.

Sprogonthetyne · 03/07/2023 14:52

Just normal trousers (here pants=underwear), but with boots covering ankles and long coat covering bum and top of legs.

Latenightreader · 03/07/2023 14:52

I usually wear jeans in cooler months, with woollen trousers for work. I have some amazing fleece lined tights for very cold days - they keep me very snug!

JeandeServiette · 03/07/2023 14:55

Down south, I mostly get by with thermal tights and dresses in winter. So it can't be that bad, although you're not acclimatised to it.

The only place I routinely go in winter where I put leggings under jeans for warmth is Merseyside.

So your destination makes a difference.

We are going to Cornwall and then into Germany and Austria. Is there any kind of waterproof ish trousers that you can get? I was thinking jeans aren’t that warm. We have waterproof goose down jackets to bring.

everything here is lightweight and not particularly warm. I was thinking I may have to order from over there or else just buy some once we arrive. We are taking just 3 trousers each. Well technically 2 as travelling in 1.

Not sure if this will help, but in the UK these companies (amongst others) sell outdoor gear including waterproof trousers - you'll want windproof ones for Cornwall if possible; Check the sizes as UK is different to AUS sizing
Craghoppers
Regatta
Go Outdoors
Mountain Warehouse
Trespass
Rohan

In Germany and Austria the most common brand seems to be Jack Wolfskin

Most people in the UK just wear normal trousers / skirts and tights/ leggings / track pants in winter. But if you live in Qld and find 15 cold enough to shiver, then you'll likely need extra layers. So I'd grab a few pairs of thin leggings from Kmart for underneath jeans/track pants.

NaturalStudy · 04/07/2023 02:32

Most people just wear jeans, but you could try tights or leggings under jeans. I have some thermal trousers from Mountain Warehouse for walking the dog, but they might be a bit OTT for general sightseeing.

Seddon · 04/07/2023 02:40

A Cornwall winter won't be dissimilar to Melbourne's.

It's Austria you need to worry about! I've never been so cold in my life - we often had minus 10 degrees or worse in the weeks leading up to Xmas.

You need a proper winter coat and proper winter boots. Plus things to keep your head and hands warm. If your first stop in Germany or Austria is a major city you could consider buying there when you arrive.

The rest you can manage with layering - e.g. tights, leggings, thermals under your jeans. I just use the Bonds fleecy opaque tights as they keep my feet warm too, and you can pull the slimmest of pants (or even leggings) over them without them bunching up. You can get them at Woolies and Coles.

Seddon · 04/07/2023 02:42

Uniqlo Heat Tech is good for thermal tops which pass as normal tops if it's hot inside and you need to take all your fluffies off!

HappiDaze · 04/07/2023 04:48

Do you think we all wear waterproof trousers because the UK is renowned for its rain and bad weather ?

We just wear normal trousers and jeans

Nothing lined or waterproof unless going on a mad hike in the pissing rain for some unfathomable reason

67pennies · 04/07/2023 04:54

I wear tights under trousers on particularly cold days.

HappiDaze · 04/07/2023 04:54

We don't do layers that well either tbh we tend to just chuck on our knee length waterproof puffer jackets in the winter and pull the hood up

RoyKentFanclub · 04/07/2023 05:03

Just jeans. You’re in fir a shock though. 15 degrees is not cold. Austria will potentially be very cold.

hexsnidgett · 04/07/2023 06:45

If you find you're still cold even with thermal leggings underneath, you could look at the quilted skirts they sometimes wear in Scandinavian countries. They do sound cosy.
Make sure you take care of your feet too, woollen socks and sturdy boots make a big difference.

itsgettingweird · 04/07/2023 07:59

Yeah I was reading thinking you were asking about comfortable knickers for a long haul flight.

I was going to add cotton granny pants as a suggestion.

But as you mean trousers - in the uk at those temps I'd just wear jeggings or sports leggings if I was walking a lot.

Peony654 · 04/07/2023 08:08

youll be ok in the UK in jeans or thick leggings but Austria could be very cold. You might need to get some proper thermals

Yea that’s what worrying me. I’ve bought me and dd waterproof hiking boots. They aren’t thermal ones though 😬. Can’t get thermal ones in Australia
