Off to Manchester to the theatre in a couple of weeks. Staying at the Lowry for 2 nights.

Any recommendations for good things to do or for restaurants! I’ve booked Maray already - been before and liked it.

So far I’ve got:
The Whitworth gallery
Maybe the Jewish museum
People’s History Museum
Art gallery in town
Salford Lads’ Club (if you know, you know)

No kids. Vegetarian. Like architecture, old pubs, walking, good coffee (Pollen already on the list), history, book shops, non wanky bars and restaurants.

The food was awful🥴

Now, now! I'm here to defend On the Eighth Day - I was there on Saturday in fact for lentil cottage pie and berry crumble with vegan custard. Yes, it resembles a 1980s NHS canteen more than a Michelin starred restaurant, but the grub is hearty and cheap. Plus it's one of the few places where you don't either need a reservation or have a 30-60 minute queue just to grab a quick lunch at the weekend.

Thanks. I prefer quieter 'old man' type pubs, or smaller bars tbh.

Oh you need to check out bar fringe then

Manchester Museum has just reopened, on Oxford Rd (near 8th Day!). Very good, you can see the Golden Mummies and lots more.

I’ve not been for yeeeearrrrrssss but it was definitely a good little haunt. Don’t forget to have a look at the Salisbury and Grand Central on/just off Oxford road too. They may be something you like (maybe)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/03/2023 16:59

Thanks. Sounds like we'll need a couple of trips. Because of where we're staying, pubs will need to be more central I think. Not sure we'll have time for the Manchester Museum this time, but it looks good.

We enjoyed an afternoon tea boat trip round the canals and loved the police museum. Sounded a bit lame but was excellent (topped off by having police and their dogs to chat to at the end).

TooMinty · 24/03/2023 18:02

8th Day is not for fancy people... 😊

OP if you like "old man" pubs then you should check if Peveril of the Peak is still open.

IndiganDop · 24/03/2023 18:32

Lass O'Gowrie pub worth a visit. Straw on the floor and lit by torches back when I was a student, it's been refurbished but has original tiles and full of character. Has a cinema room and a balcony over the canal.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/03/2023 18:48

The police museum is very much up my street.

When I say I like 'old man' pubs, I like 'nice' old man pubs if that makes sense. Ones that are clean and quiet and you can get cosy in a corner (with or without an old man of one's own!).

Lass o Gowrie 🥰

Sorry OP, I am off on a nostalgia trip! I would say most of the ones mentioned are reasonably clean and cosy, The Salisbury had some wilder moments if I remember correctly. And the Thirsty Scholar - used to have live music, so atmosphere depends on who's playing. Big Hands for a studenty good music vibe.

Not read the whole thread but me and DD went to Manchester in 2015, staying in New Kensington which people informed me was Ancoats.

Places we done and enjoyed

The Printworks (where we had a meal the first night)
The Northern Quarter and the wonderful (to me) Affleck's
The Lowry Gallery (huge Lowry fan)
The Peoples History Museum
The Arndale Centre (had to buy emergency ankle boots and rainmac as it poured it down that morning)
We wanted to go in the Cathedral as my London born 3rd Gt Grandfather had married my Hulme born 3rd Gt Grandmother here but it was closed off at that time for building works.

Trinity65 · 26/03/2023 13:05

Oh, and no idea if its still there or if you even like it, but there was a cafe opposite Affleck's that sold iced root beer . I do like Root Beer so that was a great place

Trinity65 · 26/03/2023 13:07

Oh and Pubs

We went to Monroe's twice during our stay, 1st night and 2nd night,
Was right up my Street as was all things Monroe. The 2nd night I asked the landlady if I could take photos of her collection and upload and then tag her in it for Facebook, and she said that was fine. Quiet the 1st night we went (Thursday though) but lively on our last night which was a Saturday.

See, Afflecks appealed to me back in my goth days, but it holds very little attraction for me now. Sorry!

No Worries. No need for apologies.

Yes, It's a bit like watching a film again that you saw in the 90s that was so cool then but now its a little cheesey

It is! It was open on Friday anyway 😆

TooMinty · 26/03/2023 22:06

Well as long as Holly didn't trash the place then Peveril of the Peak is still an option 😂
