Off to Manchester to the theatre in a couple of weeks. Staying at the Lowry for 2 nights.

Any recommendations for good things to do or for restaurants! I’ve booked Maray already - been before and liked it.

So far I’ve got:
The Whitworth gallery
Maybe the Jewish museum
People’s History Museum
Art gallery in town
Salford Lads’ Club (if you know, you know)

No kids. Vegetarian. Like architecture, old pubs, walking, good coffee (Pollen already on the list), history, book shops, non wanky bars and restaurants.

Thanks @Mushroo

Also, has anybody eaten in Greens in Didsbury? Is it a pain to get to?

Also great! Easy enough to get to, direct tram to East DIdsbury and get off at Burton Road. If you go to DIdsbury try the Wine and Wallop or Sip (both nice wine bars) or the Metropolitan is opposite Greens and a big pub.

I love the food at dukes 92, would recommend a look at aflecks too

Duvetdweller · 19/03/2023 17:59

I was going to suggest Greens. Superb food and I’m a fully paid up meat eater!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/03/2023 18:01

I think I've narrowed it down to Greens or the Sparrows.

Oh Greens is great! I’m not sure how close the metrolink goes to the Didsbury restaurant but they have one in Sale town centre now too. It’s slightly different and more of a tapas small plates type menu but that’s only a short walk from sale tram station.

DaisyDando · 20/03/2023 19:36

I’ve been to Greens. Very nice.

HollyGolightly4 · 20/03/2023 20:15

Greens is lovely. Easy to get to from the tram.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/03/2023 21:16

Thanks everyone. I might save Greens for lunch on another visit. Think I’d prefer to be more central for dinner maybe.

Imperial War Museum north. Lowry not too far from the Blue Peter Garden!

TooMinty · 21/03/2023 18:48

I used to live there and this thread is making me really miss it!

Lots of good recommendations already. Eighth Day on Oxford Road is good for vegetarian snack/lunch/picnic bits 8thday.coop

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/03/2023 20:33

Thanks, both.

Still haven't made my mind up about dinner! Grin

I share your shock!

That was there when l started in Manchester as a student in 1984. It had been there for a long time then.

It was all brown and orange and pyschedelic. All the students walking past were in black, usually into Joy Division, The Smiths or Goth. It looked so out of place even back then!

Yes, and no. Just near the tram stop ( Burton Road)

TooMinty · 21/03/2023 21:50

8th Day is an institution!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/03/2023 06:52

I will definitely try to fit a pop into Eighth Day in.

Bloody hell now I’m in more shock! I knew it was old in the late 90’s but not that old! Well I never! I always found it looked kinda hippified and wouldn’t be out of place in Glastonbury high street 😂 X

Visit Salford Lads' Club before you go to the Lowry. They're pretty close to each other and everything else you've mentioned is city centre or to the south. Plus the clocks will have changed by then so it'll be lighter evenings.

The Metropolitan will be rammed if it's a bank holiday and the weather's good.

Unfortunately Salford Lads’ Club has very limited opening hours, so we’re bound by that.

What is the Metropolitan?

OP posts:
WeAreTheHeroes · 22/03/2023 18:26

The Metropolitan is a large pub in West Didsbury - it's on the corner of Lapwing Lane and Burton Road. It has a large outdoor area.

Thanks. I prefer quieter 'old man' type pubs, or smaller bars tbh.

It was a pp who mentioned it. I just pointed out it can be very busy. There's plenty of choice in Manchester.
