City with good hotel for mother daughter getaway

Looking for a UK city and hotel suggestion to take my adult DD away. Happy to spend a bit but not extortionate prices.

Somewhere with cultural things to do, good shopping, easy train or car/parking from London area, spa perhaps, not too massive so we can walk everywhere.

I have done Bath and Winchester in the past.

What is “spend a bit”? And then might get more relevant help!

PotKettel · 12/03/2023 11:48

Bristol or Brighton?

PotKettel · 12/03/2023 11:48

Or Cambridge?

FrogGog · 12/03/2023 11:55

I guess up to around £300 per night (we would be sharing a room)

Cambridge or York- although obviously Yorks quite a trek from London!

To be honest you can’t go wrong with a Premier Inn 😊 I would much rather spend the budget on eating out / buying stuff / doing things and save money on the hotel side of things.

Oxford or Cambridge both great cities for walking and museums etc, easy train access too although you might want a taxi from station. Plenty of hotels at all price-points.

RampantIvy · 12/03/2023 12:05

DH and I stayed here in Carlisle for my 60th birthday.

Carlisle is an unexpected gem and has great places to eat, good shopping, a castle, a fascinating museum and an old quarter for a lovely mooch around.

It is worth going via Leeds so that you can take the scenic Settle Carlisle route to get there. The Halston is a few minutes walk from the station.

What about a staycation if you are in London? We are in Sydney and DD (20) and I regularly do this. We will often go to the theatre and yes, could just go home, but a night or two of cocktails and fancy dinners makes for a great city break.

Cornelious2011 · 12/03/2023 12:09

I'd second Cambridge. Easy to get around on foot, beautiful in the spring. The varsity hotel has a fab roof terrace and a spa and is right next to the river.

BarrelOfOtters · 12/03/2023 12:15

Manchester. Fantastic hotels and restaurants, museums, art galleries….shopping. Liverpool similarly, but hotels are really booked up all the time (don’t stay at the Adelphi).

i really like Bristol, visit often as have friends there, but I don’t think it’s great as a weekend break…

LadyJ2023 · 12/03/2023 12:36

Edinburgh or York

TheHouseNextDoor · 12/03/2023 12:47

Edinburgh!!

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 12/03/2023 12:48

Edinburgh York Newcastle Chester Liverpool Harrogate

SushiSuave · 12/03/2023 13:16

Bath? Lots to see there and nice place for a wander

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/03/2023 13:22

Chester. Stay at the Grosvenor and have an afternoon tea there. Lots of cultural things to do including the lovely Storyhouse theatre and cinema. History in spades despite the city council's determination to prioritise retail and restaurants over everything else.
The Queen Hotel is nice too and is right opposite the railway station.

sunshine7981 · 12/03/2023 13:26

Bath - the hiding space st Catherine's hospital is a brilliant place to stay. Chez Dominique's for dinner. Great shops, the thermal baths and the Roman baths.

AdaColeman · 12/03/2023 13:35

Chester, good choice of hotels, lots of places to eat, plenty to see and do culturally. Quite compact, so easily walkable, good shopping, river trip possible, nice park or river walk close to the centre. Old pubs, posh afternoon teas......

VanCleefArpels · 12/03/2023 13:45

Done this with DD - Malmaison in Manchester is fab, walkable from train station

Also done Liverpool with her, lots of nice hotels in Albert Dock area, a taxi ride from the rail station

emmathedilemma · 12/03/2023 14:17

York is easy on the train from London and a very walkable city for sightseeing. I don’t know specific hotels though, my budget is more premier inn end of the range!

FinallyHere · 12/03/2023 17:28

I'd stay in London, at the Charlotte Street hotel here or the premier in. Hub by Premier Inn here

Act like a tourist, get tickets for everything, pop into the National Gallery and the National Portrait gallery just for 30mins each. Look at one item, then continue on your way.

Enjoy.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/03/2023 18:17

York
2 hrs from London on the train, fares can be very reasonable if booked in advance.

Loads of hotels, the Malmaison is nice.

pigalow27 · 12/03/2023 18:41

Would second York and Cambridge. Have you considered Buxton?

RampantIvy · 12/03/2023 18:44

Not enough to see and do in Buxton compared to York IMO.

minidancer · 12/03/2023 19:23

York, we stayed in an apartment that was in the centre and £280 per night. Had a bedroom and a lounge/kitchen so a bit more space than a hotel. Car park was opposite

Daisy03 · 12/03/2023 19:32

Edinburgh definitely, somewhere around royal mile or grass market
